HOUSTON, Texas - Western Michigan (2-1) broke a fourth-quarter tie with two long scoring possessions and held off Rice for a 28-21 victory Saturday at Rice Stadium. Jalen Buckley capped a 16-play, 72-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and Ahmed Tounkara later broke up a fourth-down pass to help the Broncos secure the road win.
Buckley set up Western Michigan’s first touchdown with a 66-yard run to the Rice 14. Broc Lowry completed the 80-yard drive with a 5-yard run on fourth down, giving the Broncos a 7-0 lead with 1:29 remaining in the first quarter. Rice tied the game on Jacurri Brown’s 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but Lowry answered with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Aveion Chenault for a 14-7 halftime advantage.
Rice pulled even again when Tyvonn Byars scored on a 1-yard run to finish the opening possession of the second half. The Owls then recovered Josh Franklin’s fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Western Michigan 34, but the Broncos avoided falling behind when Enock Gota missed a 46-yard field-goal attempt.
Western Michigan responded by controlling the ball across the third and fourth quarters. Buckley’s 1-yard touchdown finished the 16-play drive and restored a 21-14 lead with 14:19 remaining. Rice later faced fourth down at its own 27, where Tounkara knocked away Brown’s pass. The Broncos took over in Rice territory and used another 4:37 before Ofa Mataele scored from 1 yard out, extending the lead to 28-14 with 1:54 left.
Buckley rushed 13 times for 117 yards and a touchdown, while Mataele added 62 yards and a score on 11 carries. Lowry completed 14 of 20 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown without an interception, and he added 39 rushing yards and a score. Chenault had three catches for 62 yards, while Baylin Brooks made five receptions. Tounkara recorded four tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and the fourth-down breakup. Daeh McCullough and Zavian Tibbs led the Broncos with seven tackles apiece.
The Broncos finished with 333 total yards, including 217 rushing, converted 7 of 14 third downs and held the ball for 32:53. Rice totaled 330 yards but converted only 1 of 10 third downs. Brown found Barry Jackson Jr. for a 22-yard touchdown with nine seconds remaining, cutting the margin to seven, but Western Michigan recovered the onside kick and ended the game with a kneel-down.

TOLEDO, Ohio – Down 42-28 with under three-and-a-half minutes to play, the Toledo football team pulled off one of the most unlikely comebacks in program history, rallying to stun Temple 49-48 in an overtime thriller at the Glass Bowl on Saturday.
Trailing by 10 at the half, the Rockets (2-1) scored early in the fourth quarter for a 28-27 lead, but the Owls (1-2) scored 15 points on consecutive offensive possessions and led 42-28 as the game entered the final two minutes. However, the Rockets scored, recovered the onside kick and scored again in a span of 11 seconds to tie the game with under a minute left in regulation. Toledo and Temple both quickly scored touchdowns in overtime, before an incomplete pass on Temple's two-point try capped the Rockets' comeback.
Junior quarterback John Alan Richter was 38 of 51 through the air for 429 yards and four touchdowns, setting career highs in completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns. Senior Connor Walendzak led UT on the ground with 62 yards on 12 carries and two rushing touchdowns, with his 1-yard rush in overtime serving as the winning score.
Seniors Terrell Crosby, Jr. (seven catches, 95 yards) and Adjatay Dabbs (eight receptions, 88 yards) led the Rockets in receiving. Junior Bryson Hammer chipped in 67 yards, including Toledo's longest reception (43 yards). Miller, Walendzak, Jacob Newell and Daryl Barnett Jr. each caught receiving touchdowns, with Barnett grabbing a 23-yard strike with 54 seconds to play to tie the game.
Senior Kaleb Hutchinson led the Rockets with 10 tackles, while junior Julian Fox and senior Armorion Smith each contributed nine stops. Junior Nicholas Thompson recorded a strip sack in the fourth quarter, which junior Andrew Zock recovered.
Central Michigan 24, Wyoming 10

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Quarterback Angel Flores ran for 163 yards with two scores, Central Michigan churned out 339 yards rushing and the Chippewas defeated Wyoming 24-10 on Saturday.
Flores had 144 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the first half as the Chippewas (2-1) took a 17-0 lead at halftime. Central Michigan held Wyoming to four first downs and had a 246-113 advantage in total yards in the first half.
Brock Townsend’s 38-yard touchdown run made it 24-3 in the third quarter before Markell Holman finally got Wyoming (1-2) into the end zone with a 6-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Tyler Hughes completed 14 of 30 passes for 173 yards for Wyoming but was intercepted twice. Linebackers Gary Rutherford and Dash Bauman had 13 and 12 total tackles, respectively. Bauman made eight solo stops.
Flores attempted only seven passes, completing four for 32 yards. For the game, Central Michigan led 371-342 in total yards.
The only other meeting between the two teams was at the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl when current Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen led the Cowboys to a 37-14 win.
UMass 36, Stonehill 14

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts football team scored 33 straight points on the way to a 36-14 win over Stonehill on Saturday at McGuirk Alumni Stadium (12,233). With the win, UMass improves to 3-0 for the first time since 2007. T.Y. Harding had two touchdowns for a second straight Saturday, this time tallying a 56-yard rushing touchdown and 51-yard receiving score.
Quarterback William "Pop" Watson finished 15-of-25 for the game for 160 yards with one touchdown and an interception ane he added a rushing touchdown. Harding was the story offensively for the Minutemen, finishing with game highs in receptions (4) and receiving yards (73) and a touchdown, along with 56 yards on the ground behind a first-quarter score. Elijah Faulkner led the rushing attack with 11 carries for a team-high 61 yards.
The Minutemen held a 355-161 edge in total offense, allowing just 82 yards over the final three quarters. Massachusetts allowed just 27 yards rushing for the game, the second time this season allowing just 27 rushing yards, with the other coming in the season opener at Rutgers. Offensively, UMass had 195 yards rushing, eclipsing the 150 mark for a third straight week to begin the season.
Timmy Hinspeter had a game-high eight tackles to lead the defense. William DePaepe tallied two sacks and two tackles-for-loss, along with a forced fumble. JC Clark recorded his first-career interception. David Chiavegato blocked a punt.
