AKRON, Ohio - The Akron softball team took down the Toledo Rockets twice on Saturday to sweep the series 3-0 and remain at the top of the Mid-American Conference standings with a 9-3 league mark.
The Akron Zips took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 9-6 victory over the Toledo Rockets on Saturday.
In the batter's box, the Zips were paced by Andrea Day put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Madie Jamrog (5-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (16-19, 8-3). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up six runs, three earned, on nine hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run groundout off the bat of Glass.
The Zips then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Rockets cut it to 4-3. Akron pushed across a run on Glass' RBI double, which brought the Zips lead to 5-3.
Toledo came back to tie the ballgame at five before Akron reclaimed a 9-5 advantage in the fourth inning. The Zips bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Delaney Jenkinson. Toledo put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 9-6 win.
Haley Glass put together a brilliant outing at the plate Saturday, hitting two home runs to help power the Akron Zips past the Toledo Rockets 10-9.
Glass went 2-for-2 at the plate, supplementing her two home runs with two RBI. Sophia Wygast added to Glass' awesome power-hitting performance by going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Kenzie Gatti also helped out for the Zips, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI.
Macy Walters (9-9) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (17-19, 9-3). The right-hander went six innings, giving up seven runs, all of them earned, on 10 hits, allowing three walks and striking out two. Jamrog collected her first save of the series by recording the final three outs.
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Akron plated two runs off of Toledo pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Lily Sullivan.
The Zips then held the Rockets scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Akron picked up a run on Glass' leadoff home run off of Mady Yackee, which brought the Zips' lead to 3-0.
Akron's lead had disappeared once the fifth inning arrived and turned into a 4-3 Toledo advantage, when the Zips re-took control at 6-4. The Zips scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer from Wygast that scored Meagan Lee and Gatti.
Akron gave up the lead they built in the fifth, but got back on the scoreboard in the sixth, trailing 7-6. The Zips scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Wygast, bringing the Akron advantage to 9-7.
Akron will battle Kent State in a conference series starting on Tuesday, April 7. Tuesday's contest will be played at Firestone Park at 7 p.m., while Wednesday will feature a double header on the campus of Kent State starting at 1 p.m.

KENT – The Kent State University Softball team (17-16, 7-5 MAC) completed their three=game series sweep of Bowling Green State University on Saturday afternoon winning the contest 5-2. Aaralyn Nogay was just a home run away from a cycle as she surpassed 100 career hits in the ballgame. The sweep is Kent State's second of a MAC opponent this season, as they also remain unbeaten at home.
In the bottom of the first, Nogay singled to notch her 100th hit then swiped second. Brynn Libler followed with a bunt single and stole second as well and Megan Claerhout plated the first run with a groundout to make it 1-0.
The Golden Flashes extended their lead in the third when Nogay tripled to right and scored on a sacrifice fly from Libler, pushing it to 2-0. Gabby Quinn drew a walk in the fourth and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. She came home when Alex Trevena swiped second base on a failed rundown attempt by BG to make it 3-0 in a sequence that showcased Kent State's aggressive baserunning. The Flashes finished with four stolen bases on the day.
After Bowling Green pulled to within 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Kent State answered immediately. Nogay led off with a double to left center and Claerhout came through with an RBI single to right to restore the two-run lead at 4-2. Quinn capped the scoring in the sixth, tripling to right field and coming home when Trevena reached on an error to make it 5-2.
Meadow Ferri was dominant in her five innings of work, holding Bowling Green off the scoreboard entirely. Ferri earned the win reentering in the seventh slam the door and improve to 5-4 on the season.
Aaralyn Nogay was the offensive catalyst from the opening at-bat, reaching base in each of her four plate appearances and finishing the day 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored, and a stolen base.
Kent State will turn their attention to a midweek series against rival Akron starting on Tuesday, April 7. The series opener will take place at Firestone Stadium at 7:00 p.m., and will continue Wednesday, April 8 with a doubleheader hosted by the Flashes at Devine Diamond. Start times for the doubleheader are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

BUFFALO, NY – The RedHawks dominated the University at Buffalo on Saturday, grabbing a 9-0 victory. Presley Hosick allowed one hit in a five-inning complete game shutout.
The RedHawks erupted for eight runs in the second inning to take early control. Danitza Hernandez opened the scoring with a home run before Ella Carter followed with an RBI single, bringing in Mckenna Campbell. With the bases loaded again, Bailey Manos delivered a single that scored Kari Krueger and Erin Pinter. Carter added to the momentum by stealing home and Katy Olive extended the lead with a two-run home run, scoring herself and Manos. The inning continued as Hernandez doubled to bring home Mia Estrello, capping off the explosive frame and giving Miami an 8-0 advantage.
Miami added one more run in the third inning when Leila Mathis singled and advanced to second on the throw, allowing Krueger to score from second.
After two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, the RedHawks secured the run-rule victory, 9-0.
Katy Olive had her 13th home run and third in this weekend's series and was credited with two RBI.
Danitza Hernandez went 2-for-3 at the plate, was credited with two RBI and had her 10th home run of the season.
Presley Hosick pitched a five-inning one-hit complete game shutout.
The RedHawks are back in Oxford, Ohio, on Tuesday, April 7, to take on Ohio University at 3 p.m.

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ohio softball team (24-13, 7-5 MAC) wrapped up the three-game series against Ball State (16-16, 3-8 MAC) Saturday (April 4), defeating the Cardinals, 8-7, to earn the series win.
Overall, Ohio scored eight runs on nine hits and committed two errors, while Ball State scored seven runs on 10 hits and committed one error.
At the plate, junior Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) led the Bobcats, going 3-for-4, including a home run, RBI and one run scored. Sophomore Sydney Young (Charleston, W. Va.) hit a home run, finishing with one hit, three RBI and a run. Sophomore Alexis Book (Chillicothe, Ohio) went 1-for-2 at the plate, recording a home run, two RBI and two runs. Senior Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit 2-for-4 with one run scored, while sophomore Jordyn Wycuff (Pataskala, Ohio) finished with one run on one hit, and senior Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) added a hit.
In the circle, graduate student Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start and the save, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits, walked two and struck out two. Senior Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) allowed three runs on three hits, walked one and struck out two in two innings pitched. Junior Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got her second win of the season, allowing one run on three hits, walked one and struck out two in 2.1 innings pitched.
After a scoreless first inning, Ball State scored four unanswered runs on five hits for a 4-0 lead after four.
After being held scoreless, Ohio's bats came alive in the top of the fifth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases, then junior Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) was walked for the first run of the inning. Scoring off a wild pitch added one run, then Young crushed the ball over the fence in left field for a three-run home run, giving the Bobcats their first lead of the game. Wilson followed with a solo home run to extend the advantage, 6-4.
The Cardinals tied the game, 6-6, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ohio retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Book hit a two-run home run, putting the Bobcats up, 8-6.
After a rain delay, Ball State hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the Ohio lead to one. After Miller reentered the game in the circle, she was able to record the final out, securing the 8-7 victory.
The Bobcats head to Oxford, Ohio to take on Mid-American Conference rival Miami for a three-game midweek series. The series begins on Tuesday, April 7 at 3 p.m. ET.

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Western Michigan softball team won its third straight Mid-American Conference series at Massachusetts.
The Broncos took two of three games from the UMass Minutewomen in the two program's first meeting as conference opponents. WMU won the lone game on Friday with a 3-0 shutout behind freshman pitcher Ava Geyer. The Brown and Gold also took the first game of Saturday's doubleheader by 6-3. Western Michigan was shutout in the final game of the series for the Broncos first shutout since early March in the 8-0 five inning loss.
Senior designated player and infielder Jordan Smith led WMU at the plate, going three of seven for a .429 average. The Brown and Gold had two other players with three hits, utility Jadeyn Merrill and outfielder Parker Ostach, while three other players had multiple hits in the series. Geyer and freshman Hannah Potts (8-8) earned the two wins in the circle while utility player Bella Duncan had a career long outing in the final game of the series, spending 3.1 innings pitching.
In the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday morning, the Broncos plated runs in four of the seven innings. UMass had the first hit of the day in the bottom of the first, but the Minutewomen's batter who reached base was caught stealing two pitches later to end the inning. WMU scored its first two runs of the game in the top of the second on a double down the right field line from Ostach. Outfielders Megan Malartsik and Rylee O'Brien scored the runs before two straight outs ended the Brown and Gold's offensive half of the inning.
Western Michigan scored its next run in the top of the third in unique fashion. Tighe put the ball into right field on the fourth ball she saw, and was able to go completely around the bases to score. While the hit was initially ruled an in the park home run, it was changed to a triple with a throwing error for Tighe's run. The Broncos added another run in the top of the third as Merrill had a shallow single to score pinch runner Corinne Martz before going back to defense.
In the bottom of the third UMass broke the shutout, scoring a lone run on a single after a lead-off walk and a sacrifice bunt. WMU responded immediately in the top of the fourth with the team's fifth run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Tighe. It was a quick fifth inning as both teams went down in order after the Minutewomen got a hit in the bottom of the fourth. The Brown and Gold then added their final run of the weekend in the top of the sixth as Tighe had her second sacrifice fly of the day to score infielder Haleigh Smith. Just two at-bats prior, Smith hit her second double of the season to put herself in scoring position.
UMass was able to cut Western Michigan's lead to only three runs over the next two innings. The Minutewomen scored a run in the sixth on a double after an earlier fielder's choice. UMass also added a run in the final half inning of the game on a two-out triple from outfielder Brooke Musch. But a flyout right after Musch triple ended the game, giving the Broncos the series with the 6-3 win.
In the second game of the day the Massachusetts bats caught fire, registering eight among six separate batters: Keefe, Musch, Torres, Woodworth Katharine Heslin and Teigan Walsh. Keefe reached three times in four trips at the plate.
The Minutewomen opened the bottom of the first frame getting on the board first. Keefe was hit by a pitch to begin the game, and a Torres one-out walk put two runners on. Scheivert moved both runners to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, before a Kairer walk loaded the bases. A Woodworth single through the left side of the infield scored two and gave the Mintutewomen a 2-0 advantage. Heslin followed with a single of her own, scoring Kairer and an errant throw by WMU plated Woodworth, giving UMass an early 4-0 advantage.
UMass continued its offensive explosion in the bottom of the second inning, as three singles loaded the bases with one out. Scheivert reached on a fielders choice, and the ball in play was enough to plate the Minutewomen's fifth run of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, UMass added two more runs, after three consecutive singles to open the inning again loaded the bases. Sheivert hit a deep fly ball to right field, long enough to score Keefe from third base. Kairer grounded out on the following at bat, but plated Musch to extend the UMass lead to 7-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Grace Colucci reached on an error with one out. A walk drawn by Walsh, and Keefe's second hit by pitch of the game loaded the bases, and Musch drew a walk of her own to end the game by way of mercy, 8-0.
Hannah Streicher (6-9) picked up the win for the Minutewomen in dominate fashion, picking up a shutout allowing no runs on just four hits, walking two and striking out two in 5.0 innings. Ava Geyer (6-5) was handed the loss, allowing five runs on three hits and two walks in 1.0 inning.
