DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team defeated Roosevelt 6-1 at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies move to 3-1 and close out their opening homestand next weekend with three matches.

NIU quickly grabbed the doubles point over the Lakers with wins on the top two courts. Iker Gaztambide Arrastia / Lorenzo Leti Messina won 6-2 at No. 1 while Iker Dellien Velasco / Chiao Bo Suo Nan recorded a 6-1 win at No. 2.

In singles, Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain/Jesuitas) and Nikola Puntaric (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Tulsa) remaining undefeated. Gaztambide Arrastia defeated Juan Caicedo 6-0, 6-1 while Puntaric put away Jules Rumeau 6-0, 6-0.

Iker Dellien Velasco (Trinidad, Bolivia/UAB) recorded his first win of the dual season with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4.

NIU will host three matches next weekend, beginning with Southern on Friday, Feb. 13 and then a doubleheader against Omaha and Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday, Feb. 15.


Buffalo Earns Big Road Win at Bryant | Box Score
CUMBERLAND, RI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team (3-3) defeated Bryant in a big road victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulls got off to a great start, sweeping the doubles point as Emiliano Jorquera and Faiz Nasyam won 6-2 at third doubles, Minjae Kim and Michael Malkin picked up a 6-2 victory of their own at second and Theodoros Mitsakos and Clement Mainguy put an exclamation point on doubles action with a 7-6 upset victory of Bryant's doubles team of Daniel Baquero and Miguel Angel Machado who are the #20 ranked duo in the country.

Kim won 6-4, 6-1 at fourth singles and later, Mitsakos overcame a dropped second set to win 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 at third singles to put UB up 3-2. The hosts evened the match with a win at fifth singles but Jorquera came up clutch, earning the clinching point for UB with a 7-5, 6-4 win at six singles.

Buffalo concludes weekend action on Sunday with a contest at Brown at 10am.
