HAMMOND, La. – The Kent State baseball team capped off a perfect opening weekend with a 14-7 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, completing a three-game series sweep.
The Flashes (3-0) overcame an early deficit with a six-run fifth inning that turned the game in their favor. Brady Marshall led the offensive charge, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a walk, and an RBI. Grady Mee was equally impressive, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the ninth inning.
Southeastern Louisiana (0-3) struck first with a solo home run by Brody Capps in the third inning. The Lions extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth when Alex Perry singled home Lakin Polk.
Kent State got on the board in the fourth when Sawyer Solitaria homered to left-center field. The Flashes then exploded for six runs in the fifth inning, though only two were earned. Southeastern Louisiana committed two errors by third baseman Perry in the frame, and Solitaria stole home to cap the rally. Hunter Klotz provided the key hit with a two-run single.
The Flashes added four more runs in the seventh inning, with Micah RienstraKirac driving in the first run with a single to left field. Kent State benefited from another throwing error by pitcher Logan Freche, and Marshall and Mee each drove in runs to extend the lead to 11-4.
Southeastern Louisiana fought back with single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Connor Cuff doubled home Perry in the sixth, Perry drove in Justin Williams in the seventh, and Dane Watts plated Blaise Priester in the eighth to cut the deficit to 11-7.
Kent State put the game away in the ninth with Mee's three-run blast to right field, scoring Klotz and Marshall ahead of him.
Jordan Kolenda earned the win for the Flashes, pitching 1.1 innings in relief while allowing one run. Brody Krzysiak earned his first save of the season, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings while striking out four batters. Freche took the loss for the Lions, surrendering seven runs in just one inning of work.
Solitaria finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Rienstra-Kiracofe went 1-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.
With the series sweep complete, the Flashes will face their toughest test of the young season when they travel to Baton Rouge to take on #2 LSU on Monday, February 16, at 7 p.m. Eastern. The game will be streamed on the SEC Network+.
