Covarrubias contributed to the Dukes' 2-0 week as the fourth year captain punched three goals into the back of the net on just five shots, tallying five shots on goal as well and six total points. Covarrubias started the scoring against Longwood, lacing a ball past the Lancers defense off a penalty corner. MAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week
Sophie Kent, Massachusetts, M, So.
Southampton, England (King Edward VI School)
Kent made an impact well beyond the stat sheet over the weekend, helping anchor the Massachusetts defense against a pair of nationally ranked opponents. The defensive midfielder recorded UMass’ first defensive save of the season in Friday’s 3-2 win over No. 14 Miami and was part of a penalty corner unit that successfully defended 15 of Miami’s 17 opportunities. That performance extended the Minutewomen’s streak to 44 consecutive penalty corners defended before Miami scored in the fourth quarter. UMass held the RedHawks scoreless for the game’s first 46:45, extending its shutout streak to 399:32. Kent followed that performance by helping limit No. 7 UConn to just eight shots and two shots on goal over 75 minutes of action on Sunday. The two shots on goal tied UConn’s season low and marked its fewest at home in nearly four years. The Huskies also earned just one penalty corner, their fewest since being held without one at UMass last season.
MAC Field Hockey Goalkeeper of the Week
Rozárie Mrázová, Massachusetts, GK
Gr., Rakovnik, Czech Republic (University of J.E. Purkyne in Usti and Labem)
Mrázová was sensational against a pair of nationally ranked teams, she stopped 14 of the 17 shots sent her way over the weekend. She began with a career-high 13 saves in Friday’s 3-2 win over No. 14 Miami, a career best that includes her time at Maine, helping the Minutewomen earn the victory despite being outshot 30-5. She recorded three saves in the first quarter, four in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth while shutting out Miami for the game’s first 46:45. That extended UMass’ shutout streak to 399:32, with the Minutewomen holding opponents scoreless for more than 26 consecutive quarters. She also helped shut down 15 of Miami’s 17 penalty corners, extending UMass’ streak to 44 straight penalty corners defended before allowing a fourth-quarter goal. Her late first-quarter save earned the No. 5 spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays of the Day, and she added another huge stop with 1:02 remaining to help seal the victory. She followed that performance with a save Sunday at No. 7 UConn, including an impressive first-quarter stop that kept the game scoreless, and made several saves during an eight-round shootout.
