Senior goalkeeper Dakota Anderson anchored the defense with a five-save performance to secure her sixth shutout of the 2026 season.

How It Happened

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Ball State University field hockey team wrapped up its 2026 regular season in spectacular fashion on Friday afternoon, outlasting Saint Louis University in a heart-stopping, double-overtime shootout thriller at Trager Stadium. The 1-0 neutral-site victory secures a perfect weekend sweep in Louisville and extends the Cardinals' red-hot winning streak to four games to close out the year.

A grueling, defensive heavyweight battle kept both teams scoreless through 60 minutes of regulation and two full 10-minute golden goal overtime periods. Despite relentless offensive pressure from the Cardinals, Saint Louis goalkeeper grit forced the match into a dramatic penalty shootout. Ball State ultimately executed under immense pressure, winning the shootout 2-1 to seal the official game victory.

The stats tell the story of a grueling, evenly matched tug-of-war on the turf:
  • Shots: Ball State edged out the Billikens 14-13 overall, with a heavy 6-shot barrage in both the fourth quarter and the first overtime period.
  • Shots on Goal: The Cardinals put 7 of their 14 shots on target, while Saint Louis forced 5 shots on goal.
  • Goalkeeping: Ball State goalkeeper Carleigh Hofelich and the defensive unit stood tall, making 5 crucial saves to earn the clean sheet. Saint Louis keeper countered with 7 saves.
  • Penalty Corners: The Billikens held a slight 4-2 advantage in corners, but the Cardinals' defensive corner-defense unit completely neutralized the threats.
With the win, Ball State (7-11) caps off a remarkable late-season turnaround. After navigating a challenging stretch, the Cardinals found their perfect rhythm over the last two weeks, stringing together consecutive victories over Ohio (4-3), Queens (4-1), Bellarmine (2-1 in OT), and finally today's marathon against Saint Louis.

The roaring four-game win streak gives the Cardinals massive momentum to build on for next season.

ATHENS, Ohio – The Kent State Field Hockey team were victorious against Ohio in the regular season finale, beating the Bobcats 3-1 on Friday afternoon.

The win was extremely important for Kent State as the Golden Flashes now finish the regular season as the No. 5-seed in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Kent State will face No. 4-seed App State in the first round of the MAC Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 11:30 in the morning.

The other first round matchup in the MAC Tournament is No. 3-seed James Madison against No. 6-seed Ohio. The Dukes lost a close battle with 4th-ranked UMass 0-3 to finish the season with a 7-2 conference record. Meanwhile, the UMass win completes the Minutewomen's undefeated conference season and their second consecutive MAC regular season championship.

Along with UMass, 11th-ranked Miami (OH) will also be receiving a bye in the first round of the MAC Tournament.

Kent State had one of their most statistically dominant wins of the season on Friday over Ohio, outshooting the Bobcats 19-3 with a 10-2 shots on goal advantage. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Michaela Skinner nearly had her second shutout of the season as the Golden Flashes held the Bobcats scoreless through the first 57 minutes of the game. Ava Florence scored the lone goal for the Bobcats off a penalty corner for her fifth goal of the season. Ohio was also held to no shots on goal until four minutes into the final quarter.

The Kent State offense included three goals by three different Golden Flashes. Addie Gagnon broke the scoreless tie a minute into the second quarter off a slicing pass downfield by Maybritt Duwel. Gagnon now has the second most goals on the team with three on the season. Duwel now leads the team with four assists. Both Duwel and Gagnon are second on the team with eight points each.
After missing a month due to injury, Mary Kate Finnan scored her second goal of the year in just her fourth game back to the pitch. The Mullica Hill, N.J native has been insanely efficient this year with her only two shots both finding the back of the net. The goal was scored six minutes into the second quarter and was assisted by Riley Welsch and Alexa Knott. Welsch has three assists on the year, while Knott has two. Kent State took the 2-0 lead into the half.

Kent State completely controlled possession of the ball in the third quarter, not allowing a single Ohio shot to get off. The score was still 2-0 heading into the fourth quarter with the momentum clearly in the Golden Flashes' favor.

Just 110 seconds into the final frame, Eva Usoz broke her single-season personal record with her 10th goal of the season. Usoz dribbled the ball through several Bobcat defenders for half the length of the pitch before squeaking the ball behind Ohio goalkeeper Molly Schreiner.

Overall, Kent State ended the regular season with a complete team win. Over half of the Golden Flashes who played tallied a shot while the team defense was suffocating all game long.

No. 4 UMass 3, James Madison 0
Box Score
AMHERST, Mass. – The fourth-ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey team opened the scoring late in the second quarter, then added two more goals in the fourth to pick up a 3-0 win over visiting James Madison on Friday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. Niamh McKenzie, Elani Sherwood and Neva Eisenga all scored goals while the Minutewomen held the Dukes without a shot until the third quarter. It was Senior Day and with the win, UMass clinched the outright MAC Regular Season Championship, its second consecutive regular season title.

The win improves the Minutwomen's record to 17-1 and 9-0 in conference play. The 17 regular season wins is UMass' most since the 1992 season when the Minutewomen were 18-1 heading into the postseason. Friday was also UMass' 50th win since the start of the 2024 season.

"We spoke a lot about how JMU has a very good structure," said Eisenga, who finished with a goal and assist. "They're very organized, very disciplined, so we had to move the ball a lot to be able to break them. As a team, we did a very good job of investing time and speed on the ball and eventually finding those little gaps. Eventually, Niamh scored an amazing tip-in and we converted on two corners."

The first quarter saw just two shots, both by UMass, and zero shots on goal. The Minutewomen also had the only two corners of the opening 15 minutes.

Late in the second, the Minutewomen turned a chance into the game's opening score. After a Kristy Leonard shot was saved, Megan Carpenter made a sensational play to get free and find McKenzie, who finished a diving goal with 2:47 until halftime. McKenzie's goal was her team-leading 19th while Carpenter's assist marked her team-leading 17th, both at or near the top of the nation in those categories.

A scoreless third quarter wasn't for a lack of chances. The Dukes held a 4-3 shots edge, with Rozárie Mrázová stopping all four of JMU's shots.

The Minutewomen turned momentum back into their favor in the fourth, holding a 4-1 shots edge. They turned a pair of penalty corners in the span of 1:04 into goals. First, the inserter Elani Sherwood scored her second of the season on a tremendous give-and-go with Eisenga. Moments later, Eisenga fired a hard shot perfectly placed into the corner for a 3-0 advantage at the 49:04 mark, which proved to be the final.

"We talked about just moving the ball quicker," said head coach Barb Weinberg. "JMU closes the spaces really well. When we started to be a bit more creative in our attacking third, move the ball quicker and throw the ball into the D to try to get an outcome, that's when we really found success."

Final shots were 12-5 in favor of UMass, with the Minutewomen holding a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. Mrázová made five saves across Hannah Popolis, who made three.

UMass has earned the MAC's top seed and will travel to Miami next week for the conference tournament. The Minutewomen will face the winner of No. 4 App State and No. 5 Kent State in the semifinal on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 11:30 a.m.

"[The team has] taken things one game at a time and focused on what's important now," said Weinberg. "Now, day off tomorrow and onto training on Sunday and we'll prepare for our next opponent next Thursday."
