Northern Illinois Outlasts Marquette | Box Score
DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team downed Marquette, 6-1, at home on Friday afternoon. With the win, head coach Eric Burns earned his 400th career victory and 96th at NIU.

"It feels great. It's a combination of being old and having a lot of great players over the years," head coach Eric Burns said. "From day one I've been blessed to have good situations and good kids and a lot have been here."

Burns ranks 14th among active Division I women's tennis head coaches and is in the top 50 in career winning percentage (.604). His career record now moves to 400-262, including 96-68 at NIU.

The Huskies moved to 3-1 on the season with the victory over Marquette. Courts four, five and six all went to three sets in the match.

NIU locked in the doubles point thanks to Malika Kabdesh / Nataly Ninova and Jenna Horne / Theodora Kousiou securing victories. Kabdesh and Ninova have now won three consecutive doubles matches.

In singles, NIU secured the victory with Irmak Budak, Kousiou and Lucia Yecora winning on the top three courts.

The Huskies finished the match off by winning two three-set tiebreakers on the final two courts, thanks to Jenna Horne and Nataly Ninova.

NIU will travel to Valparaiso for a 4 p.m. match tomorrow, Jan. 24.


Eastern Michigan Grabs Tough Road Win at YSU | Box Score 
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio 
-- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team captured the doubles point and built a 3-0 lead on its way to capturing a 4-3 victory Friday, Jan. 23, over Youngstown State University inside the YSU Indoor Tennis Center in Youngstown, Ohio. With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-0 on the year while the Penguins fell to 0-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles jumped out an early 1-0 lead as they captured the doubles point as they captured the doubles point for the fourth time in four matches this season. The No. 3 duo of Iva Daneva and Regina Mendez Carreño joined forces for a 6-0 win to get things started before the No. 1 squad of Lara Diaz Zayas and Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya captured the point with their 6-2 win. The team of Matilde Parreira and Sabrina Tolstova saw their No. 2 match go unfinished with the Eagles trailing, 4-3.
 
Eastern increased its lead to 3-0 quickly as Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya scored a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 before Parreira added a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6. After the Penguins notched their first point of the match with a win at No. 1, the Eagles secured the victory as Pehal () won at No. 4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, to make it 4-1. Kharadkar, who captured her third consecutive match in which she secured the team-win-clinching point, came back from one set down to secure the win. With the team win in hand, the Penguins took wins in the final two matches to close the match with the Eagles on top, 4-3.

NOTING THE TEAM
» With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-0 while the Penguins fell to 0-2 on the year.
» Eastern moved to 6-2 all-time against Youngstown State and leveled its record to 2-2 when playing in Youngstown, Ohio.
» The Eagles are off to a 4-0 start for just the fifth time in program history and for first time since starting 6-0 in the 2002-03 season.
» The win extended the Eagles' current winning streak to seven consecutive matches that includes the final three contests of the 2025 season coupled with the first four this year. It is the longest win streak for the team since the 2017-18 campaign when EMU secured nine consecutive victories.
» Eastern is now 3-0 on the road this year, marking the seventh time in program history the Eagles have opened a campaign with at least three consecutive wins away from home. It also is the first time since the 2002-03 season the feat has been accomplished as the Eagles started 6-0 on the road that season.
» The Eagles' win improved the program's all-time record to 549-467, leaving the team one win away from its 550th victory.

Eastern returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 24, in a noon contest with St. Francis University. The Eagles and Red Flashes will meet inside the Edensburg Tennis Center in Edensburg, Pa.


UMass Defeats Bryant in Season Opener | Box Score 
GREENVILLE, R.I. –
 University of Massachusetts tennis defeated Bryant University, 5-2, in its season opener at the Rally Point on Friday afternoon.

UMass claimed the doubles point with wins on courts No. 2 and No. 3. After Bryant's Natalia Vela and Maria Jose Hernandez Diaz won, 6-4, over Ella Faessler and Renata Farima at No. 1, the duo of Amanda de Oliveira and Amelia Tye took down Lucia Pino and Lisa Marie Dugec of Bryant, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Madara Markevica and Martina Pavissich picked up the point for the Minutewomen with a 7-6(2) victory at No. 3 doubles over Yahli Noy and Laura Stypula.

Despite Bryant earning points at courts No. 1 and No. 2, in the singles competition, Massachusetts was able to continue its momentum from doubles play. Markevica picked up a point at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Stypula of Bryant, before Fiona Ao defeated the Bulldogs' Hernandes Diaz, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 4 position. At the No. 5 slot, de Oliveira notched a point with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over Aurora Pedwell of Bryant. Farima grabbed the match point for the Minutewomen with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory at No. 6 over Dugec of the Bulldogs.

The Minutewomen are back in action on Sunday, January 25, as they host Siena at the Bay Road Tennis Center at 1 p.m.


Toledo Opens 2026 Campaign with Victory Over Oakland | Box Score 
TOLEDO, Ohio –
The Toledo women's tennis team kicked off the 2026 dual season with a 5-2 victory over Oakland at Twos Athletic Club on Friday afternoon. 

After losing the doubles point, Toledo (1-0) won four-straight singles matches to clinch the match win. Freshman Anastasia Akuginova got on the board first with a 6-0, 6-1 decision on the No. 6 court. Sophomore JJ Scholten and junior Jone Ibanez each claimed straight-set wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts, respectively.

Freshman Isabella Barretto won her first collegiate dual match and clinched the win for the Rockets with a 6-3, 6-3 decision on the No. 2 court. Sophomore Neha Guru earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win on the No. 4 court to conclude play.

Oakland (0-1) took the early lead by securing the doubles point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The doubles duo of Neha Guru and Isabella Barretto picked up their first doubles win of the year with a 6-1 decision on the No. 1 court.

Western Michigan Sweeps Friday Doubleheader | Box Score Match 1 | Box Score Match 2 
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team picked up two more wins on the season, defeating Illinois State and Grand Valley State on Friday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club.

WMU (3-1) opened the day with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the RedBirds. The Broncos took the doubles point after Frida Weijerman and Audrey Smitek picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2 before Julia Frazier and Sienna Osborn secured the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Western Michigan started off singles with a 2-0 lead due to ISU being unable to field a player at No. 6. Illinois State cut the lead to 2-1 after Vittoria Benedetti defeated Sienna Osborne 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. Lola Glantz then put the Broncos back up by two after a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lana Caculovic at No. 1. The RedBird cut it down to one again after Silvia Pomarolli beat Weijerman 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. The match was tied at 3-3 after Nuria Sanz bested Marielou Baudouin 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5. Smitek then won the match for the Broncos with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Nicole Iosio.

Later in the afternoon, Western Michigan bested the Lakers 6-1. WMU rolled to the doubles point after winning all three of the matches. Singles was an absolute battle, with three of the six matches decided in three sets. Frazier put the Broncos up 2-0 quickly after a 6-1, 6-1 win over Amanda Diaz at No. 6. GVSU got on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win by Natasha Sengphrachan at No. 1 against Glantz. Osborne extended the lead to 3-1 after a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Anna Soteras at No. 4. Baudouin clinched the match win after besting Ipek Sakiroglu 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5. 

Smitek and Weijerman then added three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 2 to close out the day. 

Western Michigan heads on the road next Saturday, taking on Minnesota in DeKalb, Ill.
