Akron Claims MAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- For the first time since 2020, Akron is back on top, capturing the 2025 MAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship at Eastern Michigan’s Bowen Field House. The victory marks the Zips' ninth title in program history, capping off a  team effort that saw strong performances across multiple events. Head coach Kendra Reimer-Gonzales was recognized for Akron’s success, earning MAC Coach of the Year honors.

Kent State’s Joel Enander made his presence felt in the multi-events, claiming the heptathlon title with 5,410 points, an effort that earned him Freshman Field Performer of the Year recognition. His teammate Liam Vinskovich secured the high jump title with a clearance of 2.08m, while Alexandre Malanda added another victory for the Golden Flashes in the triple jump with a mark of 15.97m.

The Zips made a statement in the field events as Owen Wendl took home the shot put title with a throw of 17.92m, and Hunter Garretson continued his dominance in the pole vault, winning his fifth consecutive MAC championship with a clearance of 5.41m.

On the track, Eastern Michigan’s Kian Wiles claimed the mile title in 4:11.9, while Buffalo’s Michael Parks won the 60m hurdles in 8.05. Akron’s Jimmy Harkelroad led the way in the 400m, winning in 48.33, while Kent State’s Jaheim Jones powered through to take the 60m title in 6.71. Carson McCoy of Eastern Michigan delivered a strong run in the 800m, clocking 1:52.40, and Buffalo’s Tal Hamel took the 200m crown with a winning time of 21.45.

Akron’s Moses Lekokei continued the Zips’ success in distance events, claiming the 3000m title in 8:11.77. The 4x400 relay closed out the meet in style, with Akron’s team of Braylyn Farrington, Jimmy Harkelroad, AJ Jordan and Andrew Styles crossing the line in 3:18.33 to seal the team championship.

Akron’s Bismack Kipchirchir was honored as the MAC Men’s Most Valuable Performer and Freshman Track Athlete of the Year, solidifying an unforgettable meet for the Zips.
