HOUSTON –
Evan Waters was solid on the mound and Spencer Verburg delivered the big hit on Friday as the Central Michigan baseball team opened the season with a. 6-0 victory over Houston Christian in game 1 of a nonconference doubleheader at Husky Field.

It marked the first time the Chippewas have won their season opener since 2020. The Huskies rebounded to take the nightcap, 5-0. Both games went seven innings.

The teams continue their four-game series on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET) and conclude on Sunday (1:30 p.m. ET).

While the newcomers produced, it was a pair of holdovers, Waters and Verburg, who shined brightest in game 1.

Waters, a junior left-hander, allowed three hits, walked five and struck out four while throwing 100 pitches over six innings.

Verburg, a redshirt junior catcher, hit a two-run home run during CMU's three-run fourth inning.

Waters got inning-ending double plays in both the second and third innings. He walked two in the second and in the third, the Huskies loaded the bases when he induced the Husky cleanup hitter to hit into a 6-4-3 double play.

Jake Kutella delivered an RBI double in the fourth inning to put the Chippewas in front, 1-0, and then Verburg hit a two-out, two-run blast to left-center field on a full count.

It was his second career homer.

The Chippewas added three insurance runs in the fifth when they pieced together four singles and took advantage of a Houston Christian error.

CMU managed just four hits in the nightcap and Houston Christian jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead. Three of the runs were unearned as the Chippewas committed a costly error and a passed ball.

Redshirt junior right-hander Liam Stumpf started and took the loss. He surrendered five runs (two earned) on four hits over two innings.

Redshirt sophomore Jared Hanson struck out five over four scoreless innings in relief. Both his strikeouts and innings are career highs.
