COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team continued its winning ways on Friday night at the Historic Crew Stadium. The Broncos downed Bowling Green, 1-0, to earn a second consecutive MAC Tournament Championship.
WMU will now head back to the NCAA Tournament for a second consecutive season. The Brown and Gold have won five MAC Championships (3 regular season, 2 tournament) over the last three seasons.
Heidi Thomasma delivered the game-winning goal for the Broncos, scoring in the 60th minute. Drew Martin picked up the assist, pushing her into a tie for the single-season program record. Reagan Sulaver stopped three shots in net to earn her 10th shutout of the season.
Thomasma was named the tournament MVP, while Martin, Meredith Vance and Ava Beckett joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
FIRST HALF
Neither team could find much offense in the first half, as the first shot of the game didn't come until about nine minutes into the match. WMU had its first look from Vance saved in the 24th minute.
Mira Pierre-Webster would then send a shot wide in the 33rd minute. Down the stretch, Sulaver made a strong diving save to keep the score even at 0-0 as the teams went to halftime.
SECOND HALF
The WMU offense came to play in the second half, getting an early corner kick. The Broncos would generate some pressure, but nothing would find the back of the net. However, another corner kick in the 60th minute would pay off for the Brown and Gold.
Martin played a ball into the box, finding the head of Thomasma for the go-ahead score. The goal was her third of the season. Western Michigan kept up the pressure, getting a shot from Pierre-Webster just a few minutes later.
The defense would then tighten up, as Bowling Green pushed forward looking for the equalizer. The Falcons missed a shot over the bar and Sulaver made one last save in the 90th minute to secure the shutout victory.
UP NEXT
The Broncos will turn their attention to the NCAA Tournament, with the selection show set to air at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10. WMU has now made two straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.
