Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Amy Velasco has been named an Academic All-American! Velasco, a junior, was named to the 2023-24 Academic All-America® Team, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC). The team was announced on Tuesday afternoon (April 16).
Velasco, who was named to the third team, becomes the first Falcon to earn the honor in 20 years. The complete list of BGSU honorees, as well as the complete 2023-24 NCAA Division I Academic All-America® Team, can be found below.
The junior was the only Mid-American Conference student-athlete to earn Academic All-America® Team accolades this season.
Velasco, a native of Centerville, Ohio (Centerville), was one of just two Falcons to start all 31 games in 2023-24, averaging 14.5 points and a team-leading 4.7 assists per game en route to earning All-MAC Second Team honors. In MAC games only, Velasco led the league with 5.3 assists per game, and ranked seventh in the conference in scoring (15.0 ppg). She exploded for a career-high 32 points in a win at Northern Illinois (Feb. 24), and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career in the Falcons' final regular-season game. She had five or more assists in a game on 16 occasions, and ended January with a three-game stretch in which she averaged 9.0 assists per contest. Velasco now has 1,038 career points, along with 347 career assists. She is tied for ninth in BGSU history in assists, and is seventh on the BGSU list for assists per game (3.44).
Velasco is an inclusive early childhood education major at BGSU, and maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA.
