Jacob Byra, Northern Illinois, R-Freshman, 141 lbs
Winning the third straight match for the Huskies, Jacob Brya put the Huskies up by 9 in the largest victory to that point, a 7-3 decision over Eric Almarinez. Prior to Brya's win, Almarinez had not lost a MAC dual. Brya improved to 10-3 on the season and 7-1 in MAC competitions. Brya had one of the six match wins over SIUE as the Huskies completed their first undefeated season at home in 20 years and won the MAC West title.
Co-East Wrestlers of the Week
David Szuba, Rider, Junior, 285lbs
David is 18-8 and 7-1 in MAC Duals this season. David beat #21 Daniel Bucknavich of CSU 16-2 in our final dual that clinched the MAC East Dual Meet Championship for Rider. He is 9-0 in duals with 8 bonus point wins since January 11th and is currently ranked #31 in the latest NCAA Coaches poll.
Gable Strickland, Lock Haven, Junior, 133 lbs
Competing Sunday (Feb. 25) at George Mason’s Patriot Last Chance tournament, No. 32 Gable Strickland (Benton, Pa./Benton) led the way for Lock Haven. He was a perfect 3-0 on the day at 133 pounds with two pins. He pinned Nathaniel Shippey of VMI in 2:38 to open the day and made it back-to-back pins with a fall over Maryland’s Conner Quinn in 6:04. Strickland won by medical forfeit in his third bout of the day.
