MAC Announces Track and Field Athletes of the Week

Men’s Co-Track Athletes of the Week
Alex Shields, Kent State, Senior
Doug Raymond Invitational, 60mH/1st, 7.86s, 1 MAC/51 NCAA
Alex Shields won the 60m hurdles at the Doug Raymond Invitational with a MAC-leading time of 7.86 seconds. Shields’ performance puts him at No. 51 on the national performance list.
 
Brian Masai, Akron, Sophomore
Penn State National, Mile/18th, DMR/5th, Mile: 4:03.83, DMR: 9:43.92, Mile: 1 MAC/113 NCAA, DMR 1 MAC, 7 NCAA
Akron sophomore Brian Masai turned in a strong weekend at the Penn State National led by turning in a league-leading effort in the mile crossing the line in 4:03.83, just off his career-best and No. 2 mark in indoor program history of 4:03.31 set at the same meet a year ago. Additionally, he anchored the distance medley relay team that posted the second-fastest time in indoor program history at 9:43.92. The performance stands as the No. 7 effort in the NCAA this season.
 
Men’s Co-Field Athletes of the Week
Hunter Garretson, Akron, R-Junior
Penn State National, PV/1st, 5.58m, 1 MAC/3 NCAA
Akron redshirt junior Hunter Garretson captured the men's pole vault at the Penn State National on Friday (Jan. 26) on the strength of a career-best mark of 18-3.75 (5.58m). His effort stands as the No. 3 performance in the NCAA this season and is the top-rated mark in the Mid-American Conference. It also stands as the No. 3 all-time indoor mark in Akron program history.
 
Ayden Bath, Kent State, Sophomore
Doug Raymond Invitational, Hepta/1st, 5407 points, 1 MAC/23 NCAA
Ayden Bath posted the No. 5 heptathlon score in Kent State history and won the event at the Doug Raymond Invitational with 5,407 points, which ranks 23rd nationally and is more than 400 better than any other MAC athlete this season. In addition to setting a new personal-best overall score, Bath recorded PRS in the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and pole vault.
 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Laura Nicholson, Toledo, Grad Student
Michigan Invitational, Mile/1st, 4:37.92, 1 MAC/31 NCAA
Laura Nicholson won the mile for the second time this season at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor on Saturday. Toledo had multiple strong showings in the running events as three Rockets recorded national top 100 times in the mile, including Nicholson. She crossed the finish line with a PR time of 4:37.92, which ranks third in Toledo's history and is currently the NCAA DI College Indoor Ranking #31.
 
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Scilla Benussi, Buffalo, Senior
Doug Raymond National Qualifier, Penta/1st, 3936 points, 1 MAC
Won the Doug Raymond National Women's Pentathlon competition with a personal best mark of 3,936 points. She set three personal best marks in route to her finish including 8.92 in the 60 meter hurdles, 1.67 in the high jump and 12.57 in the shot put. Benussi's long jump and 800m were both indoor personal best marks.
