The Ohio soccer team (2-0-0) followed up their season-opening win with a 1-0 victory against Cleveland State (1-2-0) Thursday at Chessa Field.

The shots came flying early in the first half, as redshirt senior Haley Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Scout Murray (Chicago, Ill.) fired on goal within the first 20 minutes. Senior Julianna Farina (Wenonah, N.J.) received a yellow card late into the first half, but the Bobcats stayed on the offensive.

In the 38th minute, from Miller's corner kick, junior Quintin Tostevin's (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) header grazed over the top of the bar. The first half concluded with a 0-0 score, with Ohio taking nine shots to Cleveland State's three.

Early in the second half, the Vikings had a shot ricochet off the left post, but the rebound effort was deemed offside. The Bobcats kept on the offensive, with shots from Miller, senior Carsyn Prigge (Lexington, Ky.), and freshman Anna Burchett (Prestonsburg, Ky.).

In the 79th minute, Senior Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky.) attempted a long-range shot that was deflected into the box. The rebound came into the midfield and senior Izzi Boyd (Gibsonia, Pa.) rocketed a shot into the top-left corner of the goal to put the Bobcats up a goal late into the second half. It was Boyd's second goal in two games played this season, which leads the team for the season.

The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1) picked up their second straight road win as they defeated Colgate 1-0 at Beyer Small '76 Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulls had the first scoring chance of the day in the 11th minute as UB took a corner kick and after the ball got knocked around Sarah Woods got her foot on it and fired but it missed wide right.

Buffalo had another chance in the 17th minute off a free kick, but Alli Popham made her first save of the day to thwart the attack.

The Bulls had one more good look late in the half as Leah Wengender made a great run and ripped a shot on goal that was saved by Popham and resulted in a corner, but UB was unable to capitalize, and the game remained scoreless at the half.

The Bulls continued to hold possession and attack in the second half, and it paid off in the 56th minute as Katie Krohn played a beautiful ball up the field to Olivia Bizzoni who tracked it down just short of the goal line and found a wide open Wengender in the box and the Hermann Trophy watch list selection converted for her second goal in as many games to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

The UB backline was solid once again as the Raiders did not record a shot until less than 20 minutes to play when their first attempt sailed high and wide and the second was swallowed up by Lexie Thompson for her lone save of the day.

The Bulls out shot the Raiders 10-2 on the afternoon, including 5-1 edge in shots on goal, and a 9-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Thompson was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches after recording her first career shutout.

The Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team (2-1) took down the Eastern Illinois University Panthers (1-2) in the Huskies’ home opener on Thursday night at the NIU Soccer Complex in the home opener.

The Huskies were able to take over the game in the second half and had many chances deep in the Panthers’ half.

“The result was the main objective here and to leave with a win under our belts is great to see,” said head coach Michael O’Neill. “The girls worked hard, especially in the second half and I think we deserved it. That first half we weren’t completely at the level we hope to be, but maybe that’s a good sign that we can win games when we aren’t at our best.”

Lea Gruennagel (Homburg, Germany/Saginaw Valley State) opened the scoring for NIU in the 26th minute with a great free kick goal.
“Just a fantastic strike, obviously she’s a very technical player and she hit the ball right into the top left-hand corner”, O’Neill said. “I’m excited to watch it back on film because it went in with some serious pace. It looked like the goalie was beaten and had no chance on it in that moment.”

The Huskies’ second goal came in the 63rd minute with a goal from Tyra King (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) after Amber Best (Southfield, Mich./Mercy) beat the Panthers’ goalkeeper and made a pass to a wide-open King. King then tapped it in from inside the six-yard box as NIU took a 2-0 lead.

The third and final goal came from Isabel Struble (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Mount Pleasant) off of a shot from well outside the box that bounced into the left corner of the net.
