AUSTIN, Texas -- Three more MAC Track and Field student athletes earned All-American honors over the weekend at the NCAA Track and Field championship. The total number of athletes who earned this honor for the MAC was ten, including National Champion title for Charity Griffith in the Women's High Jump and Hunter Garretson being the runner-up in the men's pole vault.
University of Akron freshman
Brian Masai earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades in the men's 5,000 meters on the third night of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Texas on Friday. Masai became Akron's first distance runner to earn outdoor All-America honors in the 5,000 meters crossing the line in 14:49.31 to place 23rd.
For the Cardinals, Jenelle Rogers had her first trip to the NCAA Championship field and, for much of the two-day heptathlon competition, it appeared she may earn a surprise win, too. She took the lead after the heptathlon shot put, the third event Friday evening, and she extended it after Friday's 200 meters and Saturday afternoon's long jump. To that point, Rogers finished each of the first five events in ninth place or better. But the javelin, the sixth event, was her downfall, finishing 20th and slipping to third place overall. She ran a personal-best 2:21.55 in the 800 meters in the final event, but the 10th-place 800 finish saw her slip to fifth overall.
Rogers' 6,018 heptathlon points set another school record and her finish in the heptathlon was the best ever by a Ball State athlete. Rogers became the 10th All-American in program history and joined Griffith among just four athletes in Cardinals history to finish in the top five of their respective event.
It was the first time in school history that Ball State produced multiple outdoor All-Americans in the same season and the first time two Cardinals earned top-10 finishes in the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Bowling Green senior thrower
Zaresha Neal closed her historic career at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, finishing 15th in the discus to earn second-team All-America honors. She competed in the event on Saturday, June 10, at the University of Texas. Neal threw a top mark of 53.23m, putting her 15th in the field of 24 and seven spots above her seed. Neal is the sixth Falcon to earn All-America honors during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
