OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team closed out the regular season at McKie Field at Hayden Park on Saturday. The Cardinals came out of the gates soaring as BSU put eight runs on the board in the first two innings.
 
For the fifth time in program history, the Cardinals are the Mid-American Conference Champions. Ball State was the regular season champions in 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2014.
 
Nate Dohm threw the best game of his young career in one of the most important games. Dohm was unfazed and was poised on the mound for the Cardinals. He recorded his first complete game of his career and notched a career-high 13 strikeouts. Dohm recorded the win and improved to 4-2 on the season.
 
Zach Cole and Ryan Peltier launched home runs for Ball State. Trenton Quartermaine, Adam Tellier, and Cole all produced multiple hits. Amir Wright, Nick Powell, Cole, and Quartermaine all scored two runs each.
 
Wright led off the game with a five-pitch walk. Quartermaine singled to right field. Powell followed with a six-pitch walk after being behind in the count 0-2 and loaded the bases. Hunter Dobbins recorded a sac fly on a line out to right field as Wright scored easily from third. Cole reached on a fielder's choice and Powell was safe at second on an error by the second baseman. Quartermaine scored on the error. Adam Tellier doubled to left center and drove in Powell. After taking the first pitch of the at bat, Peltier got a pitch he liked and demolished it for a three-run homer to deep left field. The Cardinals took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
 
Wright led off the top of the second with an eight-pitch walk. Quartermaine drove in Wright with a double to right center. Quartermaine advanced to third on a ground out by Powell. Quartermaine later scored on a wild pitch and gave Ball State an 8-0 lead after two innings.
 
The RedHawks got two runs in the bottom of the third on two hits and cut the Cardinals' lead to 8-2.
 
In the top of the fifth, Cole belted a solo homer to right center and gave BSU a 9-2 lead after five innings.
 
Matthew Rivera led off the top of the sixth with a single to left field. Justin Conant drew a five-pitch walk. A sac bunt by Wright moved the Cardinal runners to second and third. Quartermaine notched a sac fly to right field as Rivera scored. Powell singled to left field and scored Conant. Dobbins produced a single to right field and moved Powell to third. Cole doubled off the right field wall to score Powell and Dobbins. Ball State held a 13-2 lead as the game went to the bottom of the sixth. The Cardinals went on to win 13-2 as the run rule was enforced.
 
Brady McLean got the start for the RedHawks and went 1 1/3 innings. He gave up eight runs, six of them earned. Michael Spinozzi went 4 1/3 innings in relief and gave up five earned runs with one strikeout. Patrick Mastrain IV went the final 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout.
 
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, May 25, for the first round of the MAC Tournament. Ball State will host the tournament at the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.

ATHENS, Ohio-- The Ohio baseball team (29-22, 21-15 MAC) wrapped up the regular season with a senior day victory, defeating Western Michigan (18-36, 15-24) 9-3. 

"The seniors mean so much, not just our program but any sports program," said head coach Craig Moore. "What those guys invest in terms of waking up at 5:15 in the morning to do a lift or doing extra hitting and extra conditioning to get themselves in a position to go to the postseason... it's a pretty special group for us." 

Individually, fifth year Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two walks while junior Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. On the mound, senior Brendan Roder (Sioux City, Iowa) pitched five complete innings while fifth years Chace Harris (New Marshfield, Ohio) and Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) each went one inning. 

Western Michigan took the lead in the first, scoring two runs, before fifth year Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) drove in the Bobcats' first run with a ground out in the bottom of the inning. Redshirt junior Xavier Haendiges (Salem, Ind.) tied the game, scoring from first off a throwing error. 

Ohio took a six-run lead in the fourth, starting with a two-RBI single from Finney and immediately followed by an RBI double from Kasperbauer. After a Broncos pitching change, a single from senior Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and a double from Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) put the Bobcats up, 8-2. 

Western Michigan tacked on a run in the fifth, but the Ohio pitching staff held them the remainder of the game. In the eighth, redshirt senior Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) singled up the middle, putting the final score at 9-3. 

Eastern Michigan 15, Kent State 8

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) --The Eastern Michigan University baseball team finished its 2022 campaign with a bang, defeating Kent State University, 15-8, Saturday afternoon, May 21.

The Eagles (22-34, 16-24 MAC) put together 15 runs on 18 hits, including four home runs in the victory.

Senior Brady Huebbe (Peru, Ill.-La Salle-Peru (Northern Illinois)) went 3-for-5 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with six RBIs. Junior Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford (Toledo)) added to Huebbe's awesome power-hitting performance by going 4-for-5 with a home run and an RBI along with one walk. Senior Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller (Lincoln Trails)) also helped out for the Eagles, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Junior Zach Gillig (Valley Center, Kan.-Valley Center (Pratt C.C.)) (3-2) got the win out of the bullpen for Eastern Michigan. The right-hander went 1.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, had no walks, and struck out two.

AKRON, Ohio – Akron scored 11 runs and held Purdue Fort Wayne scoreless in the series finale fueled by outfielder Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) grand slam to end the game. The 2022 Akron baseball team ended the season on a two-game winning streak and secured a 2-1 series win over the Mastodons on Sunday at Skeeles Field.
 
Arrivo earned Akron's Joe Thomas Hitting Award and led the Zips with a 4-for-5 performance, including three singles and a grand slam for eight RBI and one run scored. He finished the series batting 8-for-13 (.615) with 10 RBI six singles, a triple, walk-off homerun (to win game two) and ended the third game with a homerun with the bases full.
 
The Zips unleashed 13 hits in total for the 11-0 win as Cameron Benson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI. He plated the first two runs with a homerun in the first inning. Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) and Michael Sprockett (West Chester, Ohio) had two hits apiece. Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) was recognized as Akron's Most Valuable Player for his contributions throughout the season and Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) was named Defensive Player of the Year. Shellenbarger doubled in his final game as a Zip, while Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) posted a 1-for-2 performance with two walks on Sunday.
 
Akron starting pitcher Conor Steinbaugh (Georgetown, Ill.) was named Akron Pitcher of the Year and threw four complete innings, facing 14 batters and allowing only one hit with three strikeouts for the win. Relief pitcher Jacob Krausher hurled the final three innings and faced 11 batters, allowing two hits with five strikeouts.
 
The Akron offense gave Steinbaugh a two-run cushion heading into the second inning as Wargo was hit by a pitch and Benson followed with a homerun to right field. The Zips added two runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. In the fourth, Akron used four hits to generate two runs as Reinhart and Barr delivered back-to-back singles to opposite corners of the outfield and both scored on an Arrivo single to left. In the fifth, Arrivo drove two more runs across the plate with a base hit to left field and Benson registered the first RBI of the inning with a bases loaded walk. In the. Seventh inning, Barr and Wargo walked and Benson followed with a single to setup Arrivo's grand exit to the season.
