NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Kent State Golden Flashes have claimed the 2022 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship. The title marks the 28th in program history.
The Golden Flashes finished the third round Championship at White Eagle Golf Club with a score of 881 (+17). Toledo finished in second place (885, +21), while Bowling Green & Northern Illinois tied for third (896, +32).
Kent State also took individual medalist honors, with Josh Gilkison winning a playoff with Toledo's Jamie Tofte Nielsen and Miami's Jack Ebner. On the second playoff hole, Gilkison set himself up in prime position and sunk the most important putt of his collegiate career to join 26 of his fellow Flashes as individual Mid-American Conference Champions. Gilkison, who carded a 217 on the weekend, wasn't alone in the top-five as junior Chris Vandette would record a 70 on Sunday to finish this year's MAC Championship in fourth.
After the tournament, the 2022 MAC men's golf postseson awards were handed out. Kent State's Vandette was named Golfer of the Year, while teammate Jordan Gilkison claimed Freshman of the Year honors. Toledo head coach Jeff Roope was awarded the Kermit Blosser Coach of the Year Award and Miami's Jack Herceg was voted to win the Earl Yestingsmeier Sportrsman of the Year by his peers, which rounded out the postseason honors.
The Flashes will move on to the NCAA Regional Tournament and will learn their Regional destination on Wednesday, May 4 during the NCAA Selection Show. Regional play for the 2022 Division I Men's Golf Championships will be begin on May 15th.
