MAC Women’s Tennis Singles Player of the Week
Sloane Teske, Toledo, Junior, Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sloane Teske went 2-0 over against Miami and Bowling Green over the weekend. Teske defeated MAC Player of the Year Laura Rico (6-3, 6-3) on the No. 2 court to tie the match 1-1 after the Rockets lost the doubles point to Miami. Teske then tied the match 1-1 after the Rockets lost the doubles team point to BG, with a sweep on the No. 2 court over Ionna Tsadri 6-2, 6-4. The Grand Rapids, Mich. native has won her last four singles matches and has an overall 18-2 record, and is 6-1 against conference opponents. Toledo fell to Miami 4-3 on April and defeated Bowling Green 5-2 on April. The Rockets are 15-5, 5-2 in the MAC.
MAC Women’s Tennis Doubles Player of the Week
Livia Lukacs/Jessica Braun, Ball State
This dynamic duo posted a 2-0 record at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions this past weekend. Lukacs and Braun opened up the weekend registering a 6-4 victory over Bowling Green’s Annika Vetter and Ioanna Tsadari helping the Cardinals take the doubles point over the Falcons and the eventual 4-3 win. On Sunday, the twosome took down Miami’s No. 3 twosome of Sara Zalukar and Nishitha Saravanan, 6-0 to help propel the Cardinals past their rival not only in doubles but also take a 6-1 match over Miami. With the wins, Lukacs and Braun are now 5-2 in MAC action.
Other Singles Nominees
Amy Kaplan, Ball State, Junior, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Kaplan registered yet another successful weekend for the Cardinals in Mid-American Conference action posting a 2-0 record at the No. 4 singles position. Kaplan started the weekend off with a quick 6-0, 6-0 take down over Bowling Green’s Maru Poppe. On Sunday, Kaplan fought her way back into her match over rival Miami after dropping the first set she went on to take frames two and three winning the match over Miami’s Sara Zalukar, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. With the victories, Kaplan improved her overall MAC record to 6-1 on the season and 14-2 in dual action. She helped Ball State improve to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
Hannah Neuman, Bowling Green, Sophomore, Naperville, Illinois
Hannah Neuman won both of her singles matches this weekend, playing in the No. 5 spot each time. On Friday, the sophomore earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Ball State's Jessica Braun. The next day, Neuman dropped the opening set, 6-2, to Patricia Panta of Toledo. She responded with a 7-5 victory in set two, then a 10-4 triumph in the tiebreaking set.
Gabriella Akopyan, Buffalo, Senior, Yerevan, Armenia
Senior Gabriella Akopyan won both of her matches at third singles this past weekend as the Bulls went 2-0 as a team. On Friday, Akopyan overcame a first set loss to claim a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory against Western Michigan. She had a dominating straight sets win against Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon, winning 6-4, 6-2. Akopyan is now 18-8 on the year.
Emma-Lou Pommiers, Eastern Michigan, Redshirt Junior, Aire-sur-l'Adour, France
Redshirt junior Emma-Lou Pommiers extended her win streak to eight straight for Eastern Michigan this weekend, with both victories coming in the No. 4 spot. Pommiers started at Northern Illinois Friday, April 8, winning 7-5, 6-0. At home against Buffalo Sunday, April 10, the redshirt junior topped her opposition 6-4, 6-1.
Brindtha Ramasamy, Miami, Senior, Toronto, Ontario
Brindtha Ramasamy was a force at No. 1 singles for the RedHawks last week. Going 2-0 in the first flight, Ramasamy picked up a critical 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles in a 4-3 road win at Toledo last Thursday. She earned the RedHawks’ lone point against Ball State, notching a 6-3, 6-4 win. Ramasamy also went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles for the week, making her a perfect 4-0 on the week.
Lindsey Zieglar, Western Michigan, Junior, Daytona Beach, Fla.
Zieglar went 2-0 at No. 1 singles over the weekend as the Broncos split with Buffalo and Northern Illinois. She earned one of WMU's two points with a three-set win over UB's Hsin-Yuan Shih 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. In the 7-0 win over the Huskies she erased a three-game deficit twice to defeat Erika Dimitriev 7-5, 7-5. Zieglar's weekend improved her to 5-2 in MAC play, all at No. 1.
Other Doubles Nominees
Selina Karg/Hannah Neuman, Bowling Green
Selina Karg and Hannah Neuman extended their doubles win streak to five with back-to-back victories this weekend. On Friday, the sophomores earned a 6-4 win in No. 1 doubles against Ball State. The next day, the duo clinched the doubles point for the Falcons with a 6-4 victory at No. 1 against Toledo.
Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou & Gabriella Akopyan, Buffalo
UB's third doubles team of Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou and Gabriella Akopyan went a perfect 2-0 this past weekend as they led the Bulls to a pair of victories. On Friday, the duo won in a tiebreaker as they helped Buffalo to the early lead against Western Michigan. On Sunday, they dropped just one game in a 6-1 victory against their opponents from Eastern Michigan. They are now 8-3 on the season.
Luisa Pelayo/ Grace Whitney, Eastern Michigan
The redshirt senior pairing of Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney saw success for Eastern Michigan this weekend. The duo started the weekend winning at No. 3, at Northern Illinois, April 8, 6-4. Pelayo and Whitney finished strong by defeating their Buffalo opponents, 6-2, in the two spot.
