OXFORD, Ohio — The Kent State women's track and field team won the 2021 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Champions after securing its first title since 2014 on Saturday.
Bill Lawson was named the MAC Coach of the Year, earning the award for the 10th time on the women's side.
The Golden Flashes were powered by a pair of one-two finishes from Gabby Bailey and Grace Tennant. Bailey threw a 2021 best 55'-1" to get her afternoon started as she won the shot put title. Tennant followed her teammate with a throw of 51'-1.75" to secure 18 points in the event. The duo's 18 points in the discus throw clinched the team trophy for Kent State. Bailey threw 183'-5" for her second gold medal of the day, while Tennant threw 178'-2" for a new personal-best.
Tennant, who won the javelin throw on Friday, scored 26 points over the two days to earn Most Valuable Performer honors.
Ruby Greenwood earned eight huge points in the 400-meter dash to complete her outstanding weekend. After beating her previous personal-best nearly two seconds to finish third in Friday's prelims, Greenwood shaved just over one second off that time and crossed the line in 53.88 to place second. Her time is the fifth-fastest in Kent State history.
The Flashes will have select athletes in action at a to-be-determined meet next week prior to the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Florida from May 27-29.
