MAC Announces Women's Tennis Weekly Awards

MAC Singles Player of the Week
Cassie Alcala, Toledo

Freshman Cassie Alcala went 1-1 in singles play last week to improve her season record to 5-2. In last Wednesday's match at USF, Alcala won her fifth straight singles contest (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) for her third victory on the top singles court this season. Alcala has played on the No. 1 singles court in five of Toledo's seven matches this year.

MAC Doubles Team of the Week

The Bowling Green senior doubles duo of Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Yulia Kapitanova helped the Falcons win the doubles point in a close match against Cleveland State on Friday (March 5) that ended in a 4-3 final. Tavpash and Kapitanova played No. 1 doubles and were able to come away with a 6-1 after jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the set.

On Saturday, Rebecca Herrington paired up with teammate Emily Desai for doubles competition on court two. The duo took down IUPUI’s Meghan Bernard and Samantha Hayward fairly easily only giving up one game to the Jaguars for a 6-1 victory. The twosome helped Ball State clinch the doubles point which would eventually lead Ball State to a 7-0 sweep over IUPUI and extend the Cardinals win streak to nine this spring.

The redshirt junior duo of Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney secured their sixth win of the season in doubles, and are now 5-1 at No. 2, after defeating their opponents from Oakland Saturday, March 6, 6-2.

Senior Victoria Sec played at position two for the Cardinals this past weekend against the IUPUI Jaguars. Sec only gave up one game to Gabrielle Ochalik, earning a straight-set defeat by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Sec’s victory pushed Ball State past IUPUI to extend the Cardinals win streak to nine and improving their over record to 9-2.

Luisa Pelayo earned yet another singles win against Oakland Saturday, March 6. The redshirt junior dominated the Horizon League competition in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3. Pelayo is 9-1 in singles action this season, 8-1 in the No. 3 spot. 

Ayumi Sasaki, Bowling Green

Bowling Green senior Ayumi Sasaki was able to win her singles set at No. 5 singles against Cleveland State on Friday (March 5), clinching the match win for the Falcons. Sasaki took the first set 6-2 before Cleveland State's Bethany Yauch battled back in the second set that saw a 7-5 final. In the third set, Sasaki fought back from down to a 7-5 finish, clinching the win for the Falcons on the day in the 4-3 final.
