CARBONDALE, Illinois -- The Missouri State Bears captured their third Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championship on Saturday night.
MSU compiled 892 total points throughout the four-day event, while Miami finished second with 812 points and Southern Illinois was third with 622 points. Ball State (420), and Evansville (346) respectively rounded out the competition.
The 2020 Most Outstanding Senior and Co-Most Outstanding Swimmer, Antonio Thomas started off the final evening by claiming the 1650 freestyle title with a time of 15.08.99.
Southern Illinois grabbed the next two individual titles of the evening. Senior Tamas Hajtman and freshman Adam Cernek respectively won the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke. Hajtman tapped in 44.44, while Cernek clocked a 1:44.29.
Missouri State climbed back on top of the podium in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 1-2 finish by Conner Funke and Michael Hempel. Funke tapped in first at 1:58.15 and Hempel followed at 1:58.91.
Miami's Gordon Wheeler clocked a 1:47.55 in thee 200-yard butterfly to claim the 2020 title.
The 3-meter diving title was won by Michael Claunch of Missouri State. Claunch posted a score of 310.80, becoming the first Bear to win the event in program history.
The Miami RedHawks won the final race of the evening as the relay team of Cole Grosshans, Nic Wamsley, Ben Chatwin, and Nick Ward claimed the 400 Free Relay in a time of 2:56.77. Missouri State finished in second (2:58.60) and Southern Illinois took home third (2:59.39).
