RedHawks Win MAC Championship With 4-3 Win Over Akron

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The No. 1 seed Miami RedHawks clinched an NCAA Tournament berth Sunday with a 4-3 win in the MAC Women's Tennis Championship over No. 2 seed Akron. The RedHawks (12-10, 6-1 MAC) close the season as both MAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions and will head to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history.

Miami has now won nine matches in a row, with Sunday's win avenging the RedHawks' last loss at Akron on March 22 in the conference opener. The 'Hawks will learn their NCAA Tournament draw with the selection show Monday at 6:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

The match started with Miami winning what turned out to be a crucial doubles point. Priyana Kalita and Makenzie Myers combined for an easy 6-1 win at third doubles, but this was quickly nullified by an Akron win on court one. Melati Devi and Emily Struble then broke the deadlock with a 6-2 win on court two, handing Miami the early 1-0 advantage.

The singles session would see the RedHawks and Zips trade blows in a series of fairly one-sided matches. Finishing first was Melati Devi with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court five, but Akron grabbed an identical 6-2, 6-1 win shortly after, courtesy of 2019 MAC Player of the Year Sophia Geier. Makenzie Myers was next, continuing her excellent form of six straight singles wins with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court six. However, back-to-back Akron wins would level the match score at 3-3 and leave the match on court two as the title decider.

After dropping a narrow first set 7-6, Struble bounced back to claim set number two in 6-2 fashion. This put Miami's lone senior in a winner-take-all third set with the conference championship on the line. Struble jumped out to an early 2-0 lead to start the set and never looked back, cruising to a clutch 6-2 win and sending the RedHawks into celebration as the MAC Tournament Champions.

Struble was named Tournament MVP for efforts in providing the title clinching win, and was named to the All-Tournament Team alongside Myers, whose 2-0 record on the weekend earned her a spot on the squad.
