MAC Announces Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Week and Doubles Team of the Week

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER AND DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK
 
MAC Women’s Tennis Singles Player of the Week
Eileen Carney, Toledo – Freshman, Joliet, Ill. (Joliet High School)

Toledo freshman Eileen Carney at No. 2 singles defeated Darya Maltseva in a 4-3 victory over Oakland on Saturday. After dropping the first set 3-6, Carney came back to take the second and third sets 6-2 each. Carney's win on the No. 2 court clinched the match for the Rockets and is the second time the freshman has clinched the match point this season. Carney is a biochemistry major.
 
Additional Women’s Singles Nominees:
Chantal Martinez Blanco, Buffalo – Senior, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Buffalo senior Chantal Martinez Blanco at No. 1 singles won her lone match this week defeating Daniela Farfan the fifth ranked player in the nation in NAIA as the Bulls defeated Keiser University, 5-2.  Martinez Blanco overcame a first set loss in a tiebreaker to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Milana Lysova, Miami – Sophomore, Almaty, Kazakhstan (Almaty #13)
Miami sophomore Milana Lysova at No. 2 singles breezed past Wright State's Luisa Pelayo 6-3, 6-3 at second singles on Saturday to help lead the RedHawks to a dominating 6-1 victory over the visiting Raiders. 
 
Christy Robinson, Northern Illinois – Freshman, Wellington, New Zealand (Samuel Marsden Collegiate School)
Northern Illinois freshman Christy at No. 5 singles helped extend NIU’s winning streak to three with a pair of victories during the spring break trip to Florida. Robinson, who did not lose a set in two matches, began her week with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Karen Romero of Bethune-Cookman in NIU’s 4-1 win over the Wildcats. In the Huskies’ 5-2 victory over Bucknell, Robinson earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over the Bison’s Sofia Ayuso.
 
Katja Fevralev, Western Michigan – Senior, Bielefeld, Germany (Marienchule Der Ursulinen)
Western Michigan senior Katja Fevralev at No. 3 singles improved to 9-5 overall with a 6-1, 6-4 win during the Broncos' final non-conference match, falling 4-3 vs. Illinois at Chicago at home on Thursday, March 14.  She is a fashion merchandise & design major.
 
 
MAC Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Melina Lyubomirova, Western Michigan – Senior, Sofia, Bulgaria (Emilian Staneu)
Femke Tjon-A-Joe, Western Michigan – Freshman, Corpus Christi (Flour Bluff HS)

 
Western Michigan senior Melina Lyubomirova and freshman Femke Tjon-A-Joe at No. 2 doubles helped secure the doubles point with a 6-1 win over UIC despite the eventual 4-3 loss. The pair finished the non-conference slate with a team-leading nine wins.
