MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER AND DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK
 
MAC Women’s Tennis Singles Player of the Week
Audrey Berger, Ball State – Senior, Upper Arlington, Ohio (Upper Arlington HS)
Ball State senior Audrey Berger at No. 2 singles posted two wins last week in California. Berger opened spring break play with a straight set win at the No. 2 position. She took the first set 6-4 over Kara Hinton of Azusa Pacific before claiming the match with a 6-1 win in the second frame. Berger managed to take a three-set thriller from UC Riverside’s Tia Elpusan. Berger lost the first frame 1-6, but came back to take sets two and three by a score of 6-4 for the victory. Berger also played in doubles on the top court and won both those matches as well.
 
Additional Women’s Singles Nominees:
Sophia Geier, Akron – Senior, Burgebrach, Germany (Clavius Gymnasium)
Akron senior Sophia Geier at No. 1 singles went 1-0 in singles plays at home. The senior captain beat Cleveland State’s Isabella Spindler in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, en route to the team’s 7-0 sweep of the Vikings. Overall, Geier stands 19-4 in singles action and 11-1 in spring action, all at the No. 1 spot.  She is pursuing her M.B.A.
 
Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, Bowling Green – Junior, Lviv, Ukraine (Lviv Linguistic Gymnasium)
Bowling Green junior Marharita-Sophia Tavpash at No. 2 singles went 1-0 over the weekend. In her lone match, Tavpash defeated Dayton's Kelly Pleiman 6-1, 6-3 en route to earning Bowling Green a point in their 7-0 sweep of the Flyers. In her last six singles matches that have gone final, Tavpash is now 6-1, including being 5-0 in No. 2 or No. 3 singles. 
 
Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou, Buffalo – Freshman, Volos, Greece
Buffalo freshman Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou at No. 2 singles went a perfect 3-0 this past weekend as the Bulls dominated their competition. She picked up two wins on Friday beginning with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Binghamton and then on Friday night she followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over her opponent from St. Bonavneture. Antoniou-Karademitrou concluded the weekend on Saturday with another straight sets victory as she defeated Darya Maltseva from Oakland, 6-3, 6-2.  Antoniou-Karademitrou leads the Bulls with a 15-4 record on the year.
 
Kristina Tiraspolsky, Western Michigan – Freshman, Toronto, Ontario (City Academy)
Western Michigan freshman Kristina Tiraspolsky at No. 5 singles went 1-1 during the Broncos' spring trip in Utah as the Broncos dropped matches to Weber State and Utah. Tiraspolsky improved to 7-4 on the season while winning her third-straight after a comeback win in the third set at the No. 5 spot versus Weber State. 
 
 
MAC Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Audrey Berger, Ball State – Senior, Upper Arlington, Ohio (Upper Arlington HS)
Rebecca Herrington, Ball State – Junior, Alliston, Ontario, Canada (Banting HS)

 
Ball State senior Audrey Berger and junior Rebecca Herrington at No. 1 doubles went 2-0 last week in California. The duo began the week with a 6-2 take down over Azusa Pacific’s Anna Savchenko and April Wong. The twosome then closed out the Cardinals’ spring break trip with a 6-3 victory against UC Riverside’s top doubles team of Tia Elpusan and Sarah Khattab helping Ball State to improve its overall record to 10-2 this spring. The Cardinals have lost only one doubles point all season.
 
Additional Women’s Doubles Teams of the Week Nominees:
Rita Pedroso, Akron – Junior, Porto, Portugal (Escola Secundaria Garcia de Orta)
Miruna Vasilescu, Akron – Sophomore, Ulm, Germany (Friedrich-List Schule)

 
Akron junior Rita Pedroso and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu at No. 1 doubles went 1-0 on the week. In the 7-0 sweep of Cleveland State, the duo defeated Klara Mrcela and Kat Avram at the No. 1 position, 6-2. Overall, Pedroso and Vasilescu stand 16-6 doubles action and 11-4 this spring. Pedroso is majoring in international business, while Vasilescu is a human resource management major.
 
Paula Comella, Bowling Green – Senior, Ciutadella de Menorca, Spain (IES Cteib)
Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, Bowling Green – Junior, Lviv, Ukraine (Lviv Linguistic Gymnasium)

 
Bowling Green senior Paula Comella and junior Marharita-Sophia Tavpash at No. 1 doubles picked up another win. The duo topped Dayton's Kelly Pleiman and Emily Zargham by a score of 6-0. The match was the first doubles match to conclude and set the Falcons up for their first point in the 7-0 sweep of the Flyers. The win marks the third straight for Comella and Tavpash in No. 1 doubles. The win moved Comella to No. 8 all-time in doubles wins in program history and moved Tavpash to No. 27. 
 
Chantal Martinez Blanco, Buffalo – Senior, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou, Buffalo – Freshman, Volos, Greece

 
Buffalo senior Chantal Martinez Blanco and freshman Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou at No. 1 doubles won the two matches they played in this past weekend. The pair shutout Binghamton’s top team 6-0 on Friday afternoon and then on Saturday they defeated Oakland’s top duo 6-2.  Martinez Blanco and Antoniou-Karademitrou leads Buffalo with a 16-3 record.

Katja Fevralev, Western Michigan – Senior, Bielefeld, Germany (Marienchule Der Ursulinen)

 
Western Michigan freshman Kristina Tiraspolsky and senior Katja Fevralev at No. 1 doubles went 1-1 during the Broncos' spring trip in Utah with defeats at Weber State and Utah. The duo moved their record to 6-5 in the top doubles spot with a 6-2 win over Weber State prior to falling against the Utes.
