CLEVELAND, Ohio - On the eve of the 2019 MAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals, the conference office announced the Player, Coach and Freshman of the Year, as voted by the head coaches, sports information directors and media members of the Mid-American Conference.
 
The conference office also released the 2018-19 All-MAC Teams, All-Freshman Team, All-Defensive Team, Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year awards as voted by the league’s 12 head coaches.
 
Central Michigan forward Reyna Frost received top honors being named the 2019 MAC Player of the Year and earning a spot on the All-MAC First Team and All-Defensive Team. The senior rewrote the record book for the conference and the CMU women’s program for career rebounds, registering 1,493 thus far. With 27 double-doubles on the season (No. 3 in NCAA DI), Frost is averaging 13.5 rpg and 21.7 ppg to respectively rank second and eleventh nationally. She has surpassed 1,500 career points and earned MAC West Player of the Week honors 11 times during the 18-19 season. As a mathematics major, she maintains a 3.68 GPA and garnered CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American Third-Team accolades. The Reese, Michigan native also has been named a finalist for the WBCA Katrina McClain Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball.
 
Central Michigan University Head Coach Sue Guevara was named 2019 MAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year. In her twelfth year with the program, Guevara has led the Chippewas to three-consecutive MAC Regular Season titles and four-straight MAC West Division titles. CMU has garnered 20+ wins in eight of the last nine seasons. This year, Team 51 has posted a 13-1 road record, which includes a victory over then No. 24 Miami (Fla.) to end the non-conference season. Having previously been awarded MAC Coach of the Year in 2018, Guevara becomes the fifth head coach to accept back-to-back honors.
 
For the second straight-year the MAC Freshman of the year hails from Ohio. Erica Johnson becomes the fourth Bobcat to receive the award and the first in MAC history to also be named Sixth Player of the Year. The 5-11 forward is averaging 14.0 points per game for the Bobcats, good for second best on the team and is shooting 43.3 percent from the field. Johnson has knocked down 44 three pointers this season and is 36.7 percent from behind the arc. The Mansfield, Ohio native is averaging a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game. Off the bench at Northern Illinois, Johnson had 26 points and a career-high 16 rebounds with five assists, helping Ohio win, 69-53.
 
After receiving Freshman of the Year honors in 2018, Ohio’s Cierra (Cece) Hooks continued to dominate the floor in her sophomore season to earn the title 2019 MAC Defensive Player of the Year as well as a spot on the All-MAC First Team and All-Defensive Team. The Dayton, Ohio native is the MAC’s leader in steals with 91 this season, and her 3.14 steals per game is No. 11 in the nation. Hooks has posted seven steals in games against American, Buffalo and Ball State this season and at least one steal in every game at least three. The 5-8 guard is the team’s leader in points per game at 17.4 and is shooting an impressive 50.5 percent from the field.
 
Joining Frost and Hooks on the All-MAC First Team is CMU’s Presley Hudson, Buffalo’s Cierra Dillard, and Miami’s Lauren Dickerson.
 
Akron’s Megan Sefcik, Buffalo’s Summer Hemphill, Miami’s Savannah Kluesner, NIU’s Mikayla Voigt and Toledo’s Kaayla McIntyre were all tabbed for Second Team All-MAC accolades.
 
Receiving third-team honors is Bowling Green’s Andrea Cecil, Central Michigan’s Micaela Kelly, Kent State’s Megan Carter, and the Ohio duo of Amani Burke and Erica Johnson.
 
Ball State’s Oshlynn Brown, Eastern Michigan’s Danielle Minott, Miami’s Kendall McCoy, Toledo’s Mikaela Boyd, and Western Michigan’s Deja Wimby all were selected for honorable mention recognition.
 
Kent State’s Alexa Golden, Toledo’s Kaayla McIntyre and Western Michigan’s Deja Wimby accompany Frost and Hooks on the MAC’s All-Defensive Team.
 
Ball State’s Thelma Dis Agustsdottir, Bowling Green’s Morgan McMillen and Kent State teammates Asiah Dingle and Lindsey Thall join Ohio’s Johnson on the All-Freshman Team to round out the 2018-19 postseason award lists.
