Central Michigan:
Eleven Chippewas Place In Season-Opening Tournament

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Eleven Central Michigan wrestlers placed in the top five in their respective weight classes on Saturday as the Chippewas kicked off the season at the Michigan State Open. Four Chippewas – Drew Hildebrandt, Matt Stencel, Dresden Simon and Landon Pelham – placed in the Open Division of the tournament. Seven CMU wrestlers placed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, including freshman Johnny Lovett, who went 4-0 to win at 157 pounds. Hildebrandt (125) and Stencel (heavyweight) both finished second, while Simon (141) was third, and Pelham (197) placed fifth.  Full Story...

Bulsak, Zacherl Reign at 2019 Clarion Open


CLARION, Pa. – The Golden Eagle wrestling team enjoyed a successful day at the 2019 Clarion Open, kicking off the season with success as two Golden Eagles were crowned champions and two others reached their respective championship bouts. Greg Bulsak and Brock Zacherl added championship trophies to their mantles, with each winning hard-fought title bouts against highly-touted opponents.  Bulsak avenged last year's championship bout loss to Penn State's Michael Beard by winning the rematch this year, taking an 11-8 decision.  Full Story...

Cleveland State:
Cheek Wins Title, Five Vikings Place at Clarion Open

CLARION, Pa. - Redshirt senior Evan Cheek began his final collegiate season with a title as he was one of five Vikings to place among the top four at the Clarion Open Sunday inside the Student Recreation Center. Cheek took first at 141 pounds in his first competition in a CSU singlet since the 2018 NCAA Championships. A trio of Vikings tallied third-place finishes on the day—redshirt sophomore Brady Barnett at 157 pounds, sophomore Ben Smith at 197 pounds and redshirt freshman Riley Smucker at 165 pounds. Redshirt senior Justin Patrick placed fourth at 133 pounds after being unable to contest his third-place bout due to a medical issue.  Full Story...

Wrestling Wins Twice in Season Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team picked up a pair of victories Friday night as it opened its season by hosting the Cleveland Clash, a continuous tri-dual featuring a pair of local foes. CSU took down John Carroll, 27-14, and surged past Case Western Reserve, 51-(-1). The Vikings totaled seven pins across the two duals and 13 bonus-point victories. Redshirt sophomore Chase Archangelo, redshirt senior Justin Patrick and sophomore Ben Smith all went 2-0 on the evening with a pair of bonus-point wins. Archangelo, competing in a collegiate dual for the first time, claimed a 22-8 major decision against his Blue Streaks foe and then notched a first-period pin against the Spartans.  Full Story...

Edinboro:
Ancewicz Takes Fourth Place at 197 lbs. at Clarion Open


CLARION, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team sent a total of 15 wrestlers to the Clarion Open on Sunday, with Zach Ancewicz picking up a fourth place finish at 197 lbs. while going 3-2. Ancewicz has served as the starter at 184 lbs. the last two years, finishing with an 18-16 record last year. He is expected to redshirt this season while moving up to 197 lbs. Seeded fourth, he opened the day with 16-0 technical fall at 5:24 over Brett Wittmann. In the quarterfinals, he won a 5-3 decision over Lock Haven's Parker McClellan. In a matchup with number one seed Michael Beard of Penn State in the semifinals, Ancewicz would go on to suffer a 14-2 loss.  Full Story...

Scots Win First Ever MAC Dual By Going 3-0 At Kent State Duals

KENT, Ohio – In one day the Edinboro wrestling team eclipsed its win total from the 2018-19 season. Competing in the Kent State Duals to open the 2019-20 season, the Fighting Scots posted wins over Kent State (29-6), Mercyhurst North East (52-0), and Ashland (36-3) to sprint to a 3-0 start.

Just as notable is the fact Edinboro won its first-ever Mid-American Conference dual with the victory over Kent State, an established member of the MAC. And for second-year head coach Matt Hill, the win came against the man he served under as an assistant coach for 11 years, KSU's Jim Andrassy. Kent State:
Flashes Go 2-1 At Kent State Duals


KENT, OHIO- The Golden Flashes kicked off the 2019 wrestling season with a 2-1 performance at the annual Kent State duals. The Golden Flashes topped Ashland 37-6 and Mercyhurst NE 52-0 but fell to Edinboro 29-6 in the lone MAC matchup of the afternoon. Colin McCracken (197) and Brady Chrisman (157) were the two wrestlers that went a perfect 3-0 on the afternoon. McCracken picked up a decision in the Edinboro dual, a major decision in the Ashland dual and a pin fall against Mercyhurst Northeast. Full Story...

Lock Haven:
Bald Eagles open season at Clarion Open, Crown Two Champs


CLARION, Pa. – The No. 23 Lock Haven University wrestling team officially opened the 2019-20 season today at the Clarion Open and the Bald Eagles crowned a pair of individual champions. Returning national-qualifier Alex Klucker, ranked No. 31 in the nation, went 4-0 and won the title at 157 pounds. Competing unattached at 133 pounds, Brandon Loperfido won the title after going 3-0. The Bald Eagles showed their depth at 157, as Klucker topped teammate Jonathan Ross in the finals by way of forfeit. Missouri:
Tigers Fall At Virginia Tech


BLACKSBURG, Va. - Seventh-ranked Mizzou Wrestling dropped its season opener at No. 18 Virginia Tech, 29-10, Saturday afternoon at Cassel Coliseum. The Tigers tallied wins at 149 pounds, 174 pounds and 197 pounds, but couldn't overcome a forfeit at 133 and three bonus-point wins by the Hokies. Mizzou falls to 0-1 on the season while Tech goes to 1-0. Mizzou will be back in action Sunday at the Southeast Open as 15 wrestlers will take part in the tournament in Roanoke, Va. Second-ranked Brock Mauller opened the dual for Mizzou in a top-25 bout and he dominated No. 23 Brent Moore, 6-0. He used a 5-0 second period and then rode Moore out in the third to secure the riding time point and seal the shutout. Mizzou lost the next two bouts at 157 and 165 pounds as Virginia Tech took a 7-3 lead into the 174-pound bout. Full Story...

Huskies Fare Well In Opening Tourney


DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team turned in a solid effort in the first action of the season as several Huskies impressed at the Michigan State Open Saturday. National qualifiers from a year ago, Brit Wilson and Bryce West went deep in their respective weight classes, placing at the event. West, wrestling at 125 went 4-2 on the day and took fifth place with a pin of Malik Heinselman of Ohio State at 1:36, avenging a 7-3 setback to Heinselman earlier in the day. The Huskie sophomore also earned wins over two other Big Ten foes and picked up an 8-1 decision over Mason Naifeh of Oklahoma. Full Story...

Bobcats With Six Top-Five Finishes At Michigan State Open


EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Ohio wrestling team turned in six top-five finishes as it opened the 2019-20 season at the Michigan State Open at Jenison Field House. Four Bobcats earned top three-finishes in the freshman/sophomore division while two others placed in the top five in the open division.  Redshirt sophomore Alec Hagan earned a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds in the open division. Hagan earned two wins by decision in the championship bracket, defeating Michigan State redshirt junior Alex Hrisopoulos, 7-3, and Oklahoma redshirt freshman Jacob Butler, 2-0. In the consolation bracket, he notched a 12-2 major decision win over Northern Illinois redshirt freshman Anthony Gibson, a 5-3 sudden victory over Northern Illinois redshirt senior McCoy Kent and a 3-1 sudden victory over Michigan graduate student Ben Lamantia.  Full Story...

Cardinale and Early Place First, Team Third in Wrestling Opener at the Battle at the Citadel


CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore Killian Cardinale and senior Larry Early's first-place showings in their brackets led the No. 25 Old Dominion wrestling team to a third-place finish to kick off it’s season at the Battle at the Citadel on Sunday afternoon.  The team tallied 109.5 points, only trailing Stanford (144 points) and American (116.5 points) in the 14-team event. 12 Monarch wrestlers placed as well, putting the team in a tie with Stanford for the most wrestlers placing on a team.  Full Story...

Wrestling Drops Opener At Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- SIUE wrestling dropped a 29-14 decision Friday at Chattanooga in the season opener for both teams. The Cougars won three matches during the dual, including a 1 minute, 25 seconds pin in the career debut for Max Kristoff over Chattanooga's Mason Wallace at 149 pounds. Colton McKiernan, an NCAA qualifier last season at 285, was dominant in his opening match of the season, dismissing Grayson Walthall 16-0 in 4:18. Justin Ruffin, also an NCAA qualifier last season, bested Chattanooga's George Carpenter 7-2 at 157 pounds.  Full Story...
