Western Michigan:
Broncos Open Season With 6-1 Win Over Oakland

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team took down in-state foe Oakland University 6-1 inside West Hills Athletic club on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019. With the win, the Broncos move to 8-0 against the Golden Grizzles since the 2011-2012 season.

"Today was a good start," said head coach Ryan Tomlinson. "We played a little nervous in doubles to start the day but battled back to win all three doubles. In singles we did a nice job of competing and winning matches after dropping two first sets. I think our young guys did a nice job of handling some nerves and playing really good tennis."

The Brown and Gold got off to a hot start, sweeping the doubles point with Melina Lyubomirova/Femke Tjon-A-Joe winning in commanding fashion in the second spot. The Senior/Freshman duo move to 1-0 on the young season. Both Katja Fevralev/Kristina Tiraspolsky and Denise Azcui/Jeryn Jack took their matches, coming from behind to win in the tie-breaker.

Western Michigan would then take five out of six of the singles matches to secure the victory, 6-1. Freshman Tjon-A-Joelooked very comfortable in her first match in the Brown and Gold, defeating Dasha Artamonova from Oakland, 7-6, 6-2. Tiraspolsky, a fellow rookie, took home a three set victory for the Broncos for her first collegiate win as well.

Seniors Azcui and Fevralev also took care of business against the Golden Grizlles, moving to 1-0 on the season in singles play.

The Brown and Gold will next head to South Bend, Indiana to take on the Notre Dame Fighting on Friday, Jan. 18 with doubles beginning at 5:00 p.m.
