EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Akron Zips used three defensive touchdowns in the second half to turn a 21-3 halftime deficit into a 39-34 win at Northwestern on Saturday night at Ryan Field.  For the Zips, this marked the program's first ever win over a Big Ten opponent at the FBS level. Technically, Akron, formerly Buchtel College back in 1894 defeated Ohio State, 12-6.

Whatever Zips' head coach Terry Bowden said to the team at halftime worked as the Akron offense nearly doubled its yardage output in the third quarter. The Zips only managed to gain 123 yards of total offense in the first half, but the next 30 minutes proved to be the game changer.

Akron put up 213 yards of total offense alone in the third quarter, starting with the initial drive. The Zips opened the final 30 minutes with a nine-play, 68-yard drive that ended on the foot of senior P Nick Gasser. Senior WR Kwadarrius Smith caught two passes during the run, worth 11 yards and 40 yards, from sophomore QB Kato Nelson. Akron trailed 21-6 at that point, but not for long. Full Story...

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Ball State football team struggled to sustain drives and to contain a balanced Indiana attack Saturday in a 38-10 loss at Memorial Stadium. The Cardinals (1-2) ran for 204 yards, led by James Gilbert's 89, but threw for only 143. Indiana (3-0) topped the 200-yard mark on the ground and through the air. Third-down conversions were the name of the game for Ball State, offensively. The Cardinals converted their first one of the day and didn't make another one until quarterback Riley Neal scrambled to get to the sticks with 3:00 left in the third quarter. Full Story...

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Toledo junior quarterback Mitchell Guadagni's arm and legs kept Toledo in the game in its matchup with No. 21 Miami (Fla.) but ultimately the Rockets could not keep up the pace, falling to the Hurricanes, 49-24, before a sell-out crowd of 28,117 at the Glass Bowl on Saturday. After a slow start, Guadagni threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns, and also extended drives by running the ball. He rallied the Rockets from a 21-0 deficit in the first half to make it a close game before Miami pulled away in the fourth quarter. Guadagni hit junior wide receiver Diontae Johnson with a 40-yard TD to cut the lead to 28-21 with 7:39 to play in the third quarter. But the Hurricanes answered with four consecutive touchdowns to put the game away. Johnson led all receivers with six receptions for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Full Story...

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- No. 11 Penn State continued its trend of putting up points in bunches with a 63-10 home victory Saturday over Kent State.  The Golden Flashes remained competitive for the better part of two quarters at Beaver Stadium, before the Nittany Lions began to pull away. Penn State opened up the scoring when a roughing the kicker penalty negated a punt and set up a 40-touchdown pass from Trace McSorley to DeAndre Thompkins.  The Flashes committed three, 15-yard penalties in the opening half. Kent State responded on its opening drive when junior Mike Carrigan caught a 47-yard strike from Woody Barrett to tie the game at 7-7.  Carrigan sprinted down the left sideline for his second touchdown of the year and fifth of his career.  Barrett now has a TD toss in each of his three games.  Full Story...
