Toledo's Fletcher, Buffalo's Oats Receive Top MAC Honors
Cleveland, Ohio -- Today the Mid-American Conference announced that Toledo’s Tre’Shaun Fletcher and Buffalo’s Nate Oats have earned top honors for the 2017-18 men’s basketball season. Fletcher was named Player of the Year, while Oats was tabbed Coach of the Year. The Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards were voted on by a 19-member panel made up of News Media Association members and the league’s 12 head coaches.
Fletcher leads the Rockets with 18.7 points (3rd in MAC), 8.2 rebounds (4th in MAC) and 4.5 assists per game (3rd in MAC) and is the only MAC player to rank in the Top 10 in each category. He registered the second triple-double in program history last week at Northern Illinois (Feb. 27) by tallying 20 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists. Fletcher has paced the Rockets in points, assists, steals and rebounds on a team-high 28, 17, 15 and 12 occasions, respectively, and also has produced a team-high 15 20-point outings.
“I’m extremely proud of Tre’ and he’s very deserving of being named conference Player of the Year,” Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. “He’s been unbelievably consistent all season long and in my opinion he’s one of the best players to ever play at the University of Toledo. This award certainly puts a stamp on it. He really has no weaknesses in his game and he’s very versatile. What’s really impressive about Tre’ though is his positive energy, leadership and that he’s our hardest worker every day in practice.”
Oats led the Bulls to one of their best seasons in school history as UB enters the MAC Tournament with a 23-8 record and a 15-3 mark in conference play, winning the MAC Regular Season Title outright for the first time in school history. The 15 MAC wins are a school record, while the 23 overall victories tie the program mark for wins.
He is a guiding a potent Buffalo offense that is averaging 85.2 points per game, which is currently fifth nationally. The Bulls lead the entire nation in 80-point games with 24. UB has hit the century mark four time this year, which is the most by a UB team since 1964-65.
