BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - For the first time since 2000, the Eastern Michigan Eagles claimed both the men's and women's Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship titles. The ladies posted a two-day total of 154 points, while the men finished with 179.
A 1-2 finish was the theme across the first three events of the day.
Akron’s Curtis Richardson grabbed the high jump title with a vertical of 2.18m (7' 1¾"), his teammate Cody Stine followed jumping 2.15m (7' 0½").
In the men’s triple jump, Kent State’s Craig Stevens Jr. leapt 15.89m (52' 1¾") to take the crown, while freshman Anthony Milliner finished second with a 15.01m (49' 3").
Bowling Green defended their home turf in the women’s shot put. Aliyah Gustafson lofted 16.75m (54' 11½") to finish first, while Elizabeth Iversen threw 15.82m (51' 11") for second.
After the final four events in the men’s heptathlon, Akron junior Kamar Majid collected a total of 5188 points to win first place. Kent State’s Isaac Agyemang (5135) and Ryan Looser (5062) respectively completed the top three.
The women’s triple jump title went to NIU’s Jehvania Whyte. The senior claimed the program’s first MAC victory in the event with a leap of 13.13m, tying the championship record.
Ball State’s Regan Lewis defended her high jump title from the outdoor season by clearing 1.76m (5-09.25). Toledo’s Atalia Da Silva and Bowling Green’s Stacey Wolverton rounded out the top three in clearing 1.72m (5-07.75). Da Silva finished second due to less failed attempts.
Samantha Tollerud repeated as MAC women’s pole vault champion, eclipsing 4.19m (13-9.0). Akron finished 2-3, with Jenna Frantz edging Lucy Bryan on attempts in clearing 4.09m (13-5.0).
Kent State’s David Paliscak threw 17.69m to win the men’s shot put. CMU’s Kevin Weiler finished second with a loft of 17.43m and KSU’s Walter Petzel placed third (16.99m).
In the 60m dash, Shanice Williams took the women’s title with a time of 7.41, recording Toledo’s first win in the event. On the men’s side, Kent State’s Riak Reese took top honors, running a 6.73.
Reese would land on top of the podium later in the day, recording a 21.27 in the 200m. For his efforts throughout the championship, the senior was named a Most Valuable Performer and the 2018 Men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer.
Akron’s Dara Perry claimed the women’s 60m hurdle crown with a time of 8.31. Central Michigan’s Shane Moffo grabbed the men’s honor by crossing in 7.99.
Eastern Michigan’s Jasmine Jones took the top spot in both the 200m and 400m. The senior posted a 23.98 and 54.56, respectively. Jones was named the MAC Most Outstanding Track Performer along with earning a spot on the All-MAC First Team.
After sitting out the 2017 season, Tyler Brown returned to the 400m to recapture his title from 2016. The EMU senior crossed in 47.50 to land atop the podium. He also served as the anchor leg of the first-place 4x4 relay team. Brown along with Tyler Johnson, Tyler Underwood and Owen Richardson finished in 3:14.74.
Eastern Michigan freshman Owen Day had himself a day finishing in first-place in the 800m and the mile. He respectively timed 1:53.57 and 4:08.71. Based on his performaces, Day earn Most Valuable Performer honors.
An eagle also took the women’s 800m title. Senior Jenna Wyns clocked a 2:09.97. Her teammate Natalie Cizmas followed behind at 2:10.09. Kent State’s Lauren Burnett completed the top three with a time of 2:12.21.
For the third straight year, the EMU men finished 1-2-3 in the 3000. Nicholas Raymond led the way with n 8:24.65. Lahasene Bouchikhi crossed .02 later and Mitchell Lenneman followed in 8:25.67. With his performance through the two-days of competition, Raymond was named a Most Valuable Performer.
Eastern Michigan turned in another 1-2-3 finish in the women’s mile. Natalie Cizmas crossed first in 4:52.27. Sydney Meyers finished second in 4:52.86 and Alsu Bogdanova followed in 4:54.00. Meyers and Bogdanova would go on to finish 1-2 in the 3000m, clocking 9:34.08 and 9:34.09, respectively. Bogdanova garnered the women’s Most Valuable Performer honors for her success throughout the championship.
The final event of the day went to Central Michigan. The team of Gabriella Beauvais, Simonae Dismuke, Kyla Walton and Samantha Cuneo finished the 4x400 Relay in 3:43.48 to take gold.
The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are set for March 9-10 in College Station, Texas.
