TOLEDO, Ohio -- Senior quarterback Logan Woodsidethrew for 314 yards and junior placekicker Jameson Vest kicked a career-best four field goals to lead Toledo to a 47-13 victory over Elon in the season opener at the Glass Bowl Thursday night. While Toledo's offense racked up 553 yards of total offense, it was the Rockets' defense that dominated, limiting the Phoenix to just 175 yards of total offense. Elon gained just 65 yards in the first half and failed to complete a pass in five attempts. The Phoenix did not complete their first pass until the 11:06 mark of the third quarter and finished the night 3-of-14 passing for 47 yards.  Full Story...

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan running back Devon Spalding scored on a 4-yard run in the third overtime on Thursday as the Chippewas topped Rhode Island, 30-27, and then breathed a sigh of relief after surviving against the FCS Rams in the season opener before 16,311 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Shane Morris, a graduate transfer from Michigan, threw for 226 yards and a touchdown in his Central Michigan debut and the Chippewas finished with 499 yards in total offense. CMU running back Jonathan Ward, a sophomore, rushed for a career-high 147 yards and a touchdown.  Full Story...

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University at Buffalo football team put a major scare into the Big Ten's Minnesota Gophers, before falling, 17-7, at the TCF Bank Stadium in the opener on Thursday night. An experienced Minnesota team returned 17 starters to a team that won nine games and won a bowl game a year ago, but had trouble shaking the Bulls. Buffalo junior wide receiver Anthony Johnson, who played in his first career game for the Bulls after redshirting last season, finished with 11 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown.
