AVON, Ohio -- No. 5 Ohio trailed the entire game until a six run offensive explosion in the eighth inning helped the Bobcats claim the the 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament championship with a 7-4 win over No. 3 Eastern Michigan Sunday afternoon at Sprenger Stadium.
The win over the Eagles gives the Bobcats their third MAC tournament title in program histroy (1997, 2015).
After a quiet first two innings at the plate, the Bobcats got on the board in the top of the third inning with an RBI sac fly by Tyler Finkler that brought Anthony Mrosla across the plate to give Ohio a 1-0 lead early on in the contest.
Eastern Michigan answered back in their half of the third inning scoring three runs and regaining the lead. Mike Mioduszewski hit a towering solo home run, Zachary Owings brought in a run on a fielder’s choice and Nick Jones had an RBI groundout to make it 3-1 Eagles through three.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jordan Peterson ripped an RBI double into left field which included a throwing error by the Bobcats advancing Peterson to third and allowed Drake Lubin to score extend their lead to 4-1.
Ohio stormed back with a monstrous eighth inning in which six runs were scored. Ty Black’s three-run home run was the headliner of the inning that initially tied the game at four, before an error and a double brought home the go-head runs.
The Eagles had runners on first and second with two outs, but Ohio’s Jake Roehn shut the door with his second strikeout out of inning and at that moment, the Bobcats were champions.
Ohio will now wait and find out where they will be placed for the the regional round of the 2017 College World Series. The NCAA selection show for the College World Series will air tomorrow, May 29, at noon over on ESPN2.
