YPSILANTI, Michigan - For the first time in program history, the Akron Zips won both the Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship titles.
Kent State’s Reggie Jagers started the day off with a hurl of 22.01m (72-02.50) to claim the men’s weight throw title. The Golden Flashes also picked up the top honor on the women’s side, with Gabrielle Figueroa throwing a 19.58m (64-02.75).
Eastern Michigan’s Cameron Hart leapt a personal best 2.18m (7-01.75) in the men’s high jump to capture the crown. Akron’s Nikki Mason earned the women’s title by clearing 1.81m (5-11.25).
Over in the sand pit, Akron’s Ariadna Ramos Gandia tabbed her second straight triple jump title with a leap of 12.78m (41-11.25). Her teammate, Michael Ohiembor took the men’s crown with a jump of 15.50m (50-10.25).
Akron continued to dominate the field events, as sophomore Matt Ludwig cleared 5.22m (17-01.50), to become the men’s pole vault champion.
In the men’s heptathlon, Buffalo senior Mike Morgan produced a final point total of 5439 to claim the title. Kent State’s TJ Lawson finished second with 5411 and Akron’s Kamar Majid took third with 5001 through all seven events.
In the running events, Eastern Michigan continued to command the distance races. For the second straight year, Willy Fink led the Eagles to 1-2-3 finish in the 3000m. Fink finished in a time of 8:12.75, while Lahsene Bouchikhi followed in 8:16.92 and Nick Raymond crossed third in 8:22.91.
In the mile, Fink crossed in 4:09.24, Hlynur Andersson followed in 4:09.43 and Csaba Matko crossed third in 4:10.17. Based on his three-first place finishes throughout the championship, Willy Fink garnered the title Most Valuable Performer for the second time in his career.
The EMU women also continued to be a dominate force in the distance events. The ladies went 1-2-3 for the second straight year in the 3000m. Sophomore Sydney Meyers led the pack, crossing in 9:33.67. Jordann McDermitt followed behind in 9:33.72 and Alsu Bogdanova rounded out the podium in 9:35.81. Bogdanova captured her second individual title of the championship in the mile by finishing in 4:49.23. Her teammate, Natalie Cizmas crossed second with a time of 4:50.01.
Cizmas earned the 800m run title with a 2:10.16 finish. Akron’s Mackenzie Andrews picked up second place honors with a time of 2:11.56. In the women’s 200m, EMU’s Jasmine Jones took the women’s 200m title in 24.31.
In the men’s 60m hurdles, Buffalo senior Ryan Billian took the crown in 7.88. The Bulls garnered another top honor from Craig Kaiser in the 800m, who took the title with a time of 1:53.59. Josh Gali added another individual victory to Buffalo’s tally in the men’s 200m (21.39) Gali also took the 400m title with a time of 47.50. The senior was selected as the Most Outstanding Track Performer.
Central Michigan’s Samantha Cuneo registered her first individual title in the women’s 400m. The sophomore finished in 55.02. Ball State’s Jazmin Smith captured her first MAC crown in the women’s 60m hurdles with an 8.43 finish.
In the 60m dash, it was an Akron sweep for the men’s and women’s titles. The men went 1-2-3, with Hakeem Lawrence crossing first in 6.71, Hakeen Wrimene in second at 6.78, and Kwadarrius Smith in third at 6.79. Senior Daniella Johnson finished first for the ladies in 7.48, while teammate Daziah Green followed in 7.54. Western Michigan’s Madison Meredith rounded out the top three with a time of 7.61.
The Western Michigan women successfully defended their 4x400 relay title with the team of Sarita Dotson, Lindsey Hufnagel, Davonne Bolden and Madison Meredith (3:46.04). The Buffalo men’s team of Gyasi Morris, Josh Gali, Craig Kaiser and Mitchell Moore finished in 3:17.61 to capture UB’s first ever victory in the event.
The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are set for March 10-11 in College Station, Texas.
