TUCSON, Ariz. - - Led by a pair of home runs from senior Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville), the Ball State offense exploded for 17 runs to open the Wildcat Invitational with a 17-2 (5) win over Drake Friday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium.

A pair of seventh-inning comeback bids fell just short for the Bowling Green State University softball team on Friday (Feb. 17), as the Falcons dropped a pair of two-run decisions at the Charlotte First Pitch Classic. BGSU fell by scores of 6-4 to Canisius and 2-0 to host Charlotte.

HAMMOND, LA – The University at Buffalo softball team began its 2017 season on Friday with a pair of defeats at the Lion Classic II, hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. UB fell 9-1 in five innings to Southeastern Louisiana in the opener and then lost 4-0 to Morehead State in the second game.

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened the season with a split at day one of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Eagles (1-1) used a walk-off single to top Boston University (2-4), 7-6, before falling short against Villanova (1-0), 1-0, in a pitcher's dual. EMU's win over BU was its first season opening win since 2014.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Kent State proved that it can play with any team in the country Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, as the Golden Flashes beat San Diego, 6-2, and battled No. 7 Oregon in a 4-3 loss. Junior Holly Speers hit a pair of home runs against the Toreros and senior Ronnie Ladines held the Ducks to a season-low four hits in the nightcap.

ATHENS, Ohio – The Northern Illinois University softball team rallied in the top of the seventh in its season opener with Rutgers in a big way as NIU defeated the Scarlet Knights, 17-9, in the season opener at the Ohio Softball Stadium Friday.

ATHENS, Ohio - Led by Madison Claytor's three-homerun day, the Ohio softball team opened its home portion of the schedule today (Feb. 17). The Bobcats defeated Big 10 opponent Rutgers 8-5 in the first game of the day. In the second game of the day against Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois, the Bobcats battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. However the game was suspended due to darkness tied at 2-2. Play will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow for extra innings.

BOCA RATON, FL – Toledo dropped both of its games on the opening day of FAU's Strike Out Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, FL. In its first of two match ups, the Rockets dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Tulsa. Sophomore P Heather Webb (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season after allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings. UT then fell in its second contest to host, Florida Atlantic, 8-0. With the defeats, Toledo drops to 1-6 on the season.
