NOBLESVILLE, Indiana - Kent State continues to run Women's Golf in the Mid-American Conference, as they claimed their 18th consecutive title on Sunday at Purgatory Golf Club. The Golden Flashes turned in a three day total of 868 ( 4), to rewrite the record book for most consecutive MAC Championship Titles.
Four of the five Kent State players finished in the top ten. Junior Wad Phaewchimplee led the team, finishing tied for fourth, shooting a 216 over the three days. Following one stroke behind, was senior Amira Alexander, turning in a 217. Senior Josee Doyon and freshman Michaela Finn tied for seventh at 218. MAC Women's Golfer of the Year, Taylor Kim tied for 15th with a 225.
The Toledo Rockets came in four strokes behind the Golden Flashes to take second with 872 ( 8). Freshman Pimchanok Kawil shot 213 (73, 69, 71) through the tournament, receiving runner-up medalist honors. UT's Head Coach, Nicole Hollingsworth was selected by her peers as MAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year.
Ohio held their third position from Saturday to finish the championship with a team 882 ( 18). Eastern Michigan (896, 32) and Western Michigan (899, 35) respectively round out the top five. Northern Illinois and Akron tied for sixth (905, 41). Bowling Green (913, 49), Ball State (920, 56), and Central Michgian (958, 94) complete the field.
Individually, Akron freshman Danielle Nicholson maintained her lead from the first two rounds to capture the 2016 title. She shot one-under Sunday to finish the weekend five-under at 211. Nicholson was also voted MAC Women's Golf Freshman of the year and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team and All-MAC First Team.
Rounding out the individual awards was the 2016 Sportswoman of the Year, presented to Ohio senior Lauren McKinzie. As voted by her peers, the Sportswoman of the Year award recognizes the player whom other players most enjoy playing or conversing with; has good rapport with her own team; is supportive of her own team, but also respects the competition; makes players feel comfortable to be around her; commands respect and esteem rather than merely being popular and would consider to be worthy of representing women's intercollegiate golf to others.
With their conference win, Kent State automatically advances to NCAA regionals. Their selection will be announced Monday at 6:00 p.m.
