NCAA RECOGNIZES 10 MAC ATHLETIC PROGRAMS FOR MULTI-YEAR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, INCLUDING 20 TEAMS ACROSS NINE SPORTS

Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA announced today the public recognition for outstanding academic performance to 10 athletic programs from the Mid-American Conference (MAC), which includes a total of 20 different teams recognized across nine sports.  Full NCAA Release.

Based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Report (APR), these 20 MAC teams have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport.

Kent State led the way in the MAC and was recognized in five sports (baseball, gymnastics, volleyball, women’s cross country, women’s golf), while Bowling Green (gymnastics, men’s cross country, women’s golf) and Northern Illinois (gymnastics, men’s tennis, women’s tennis) were each honored in three sports.

Central Michigan (volleyball, women’s golf) and Eastern Michigan (volleyball, women’s golf) were both honored in two sports, while Akron (women’s cross country), Buffalo (men’s tennis), Miami (men’s golf), Ohio (women’s cross country) and Western Michigan (men’s tennis) each received recognition as well.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.

The APR provided a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.
