Old Dominion junior Kevin Beazley posted a perfect 5-0 record in his first collegiate tournament since the 2015 NCAAs, racking up three major decision wins and two decisions over ranked foes. After taking an Olympic redshirt last season, the 14th-ranked Beazley topped No. 18 Frank Mattiace of Penn, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and took down Army's 15th-ranked Rocco Caywood, 7-2, in the finals. He claimed first place in a field that included five top-20 ranked wrestlers.

Additional Nominees:
Andrew McNally, Eastern Michigan—Freshman, Uniontown, Ohio (Lake High School)

Eastern Michigan freshman Andrew McNally had a successful debut at the Eastern Michigan Open wrestling unattached at 174 lbs. McNally took fifth place in a bracket that included 27 wrestlers, finishing with a 5-1 record. The 'true' freshman began his career with a bang, as he pinned his opponent in just 50 seconds. He followed that up with a 15-0 technical fall to advance to the quarterfinal. There, he fell to eventual champion Myles Amine of Michigan and was sent to the consolation. Despite the setback, McNally proceeded to rattle off three straight victories in the wrestle backs to claim the fifth spot. In the first consolation, McNally nabbed his second pin of the day, this time in 1:53. Following that, he had a hard earned 6-4 decision over Seth Williams of Ohio State to get to the fifth-place match. In his final bout, McNally dominated his opponent, Quinton Rosser of NIU, for a decisive 12-4 major decision victory.
