ST. BONNAVENTURE, N.Y. – Akron women's soccer takes its first loss of the season against the Cornell Big Red, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 6, in its second game of the Alumni Classic in St. Bonnaventure, N.Y.
"It was a tough one for sure, today Cornell was the better team. We never really got into our rhythm, but whether we win or lose, we look to improve individually and collectively and will continue to move forward to the next game," said Akron head coach Noreen Herlihy. "It was our fourth game in eight days with three of the four games on the road. It may have taken a toll a bit, but we will take a couple of days to rest up and look to move on."
Six different Zips recorded Akron's six shots in the match. Seniors Katie George (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) and Holly Ohradzansky (Avon, Ohio) along with junior Abby Gindlesberger (Canton, Ohio) registered shots on goal.
Junior goalie Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) collected seven saves in nine opportunities.
Senior Jenna Andersen (Sterling Heights, Mich.), junior Sarah Sivic (Broadview Heights, Ohio) along with George were named to the All-Tournament team by the four team's head coaches.
In the 16' Akron (3-1-1) recorded its first shot on goal. George sent a shot from outside the box that was just high and hit the cross the bar.
Cornell (3-0-1) got on the board with their first goal of the game in the 25' when Carolyn Rouff's shot was able to get past Hegeman.
Following the goal, freshman Becca Gordon (Johnstown, Ohio) attempted to tie the game up before halftime but her shot went wide right of the net.
The Big Red took a 2-0 advantage at the 67:46 mark of the second half after Elizabeth Crowell scored her second goal of the year.
Gindlesberger attempted a shot on goal in the 77' but Cornell's goalie Kelsey Tierney made the save.
With time five minutes left to play (85'), Ohradzanksy tried to get something going for the Zips late in the game and sent a shot on goal but the keeper was able to make a play.
Akron's 3-1-1 (.700) record through the first five games of the season is the best start to the year since 2008.
George is now tied for 11th in the NCAA for most goals scored on the year with four.

Middle Tennessee 1, Ball State 0
Box Score
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Ball State soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback Sunday against Middle Tennessee to close out the “Stomp in the Swamp” at LSU.
The Cardinals (3-2-1), coming off a 1-1 draw against LSU, surrendered the game’s only goal in the 70th minute. Middle Tennessee (4-1) has now won four games by a 1-0 score. The Blue Raiders’ only loss came two days ago against Indiana.
“It’s disappointing to lose today, but we wanted to learn from this weekend, and I think we showed ourselves we can play with the best of them,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “Our team has matured and grown over this weekend, and we have exposed ourselves to different styles of play.
“The trip was also a chance to give our players some educational experiences away from the field and to enhance our team chemistry.”
Ball State applied some pressure early in the game, registering five shots in the first 15 minutes, but Middle Tennessee withstood the early attack. The Blue Raiders held a 7-3 edge in shots in the decisive second half.
Middle Tennessee broke a scoreless tie in the 70th minute when Tori Hawkins fed a corner kick to Brianna Jasenak for a header. It was the only one of the team’s five shots on goal to get past Ball State keeper Alyssa Heintschel.
“We created chances, offensively, but we didn’t convert them,” Roberts said. “We conceded a goal on a corner kick where they really kind of crowded Alyssa and obstructed her. We have to make sure we get better at dealing with set pieces like that. We’ll give it a little more attention, and we’ll be fine.”
The Cardinals managed a couple shots in the closing minutes, both from Leah Mattingly, but could not find the net. Kelsey Brouwer played the full 90 minutes in goal to post the shutout for Middle Tennessee.
Ball State will now have a week off before returning to action next Sunday at Indiana.

How It Happened
After the normal early feeling out period, the Orange had the first shot of the contest as Eva Gordon forced Laura Dougall to make a big stop just five minutes into play.
In the 14th minute, Syracuse came within inches of taking the 1-0 lead as Eva Gordon headed a hard shot at Laura Dougall. The ball bounced off of Dougall's hands and tricked towards the goal line before a diving Dougall knocked the ball out of dangers way.
10 minutes later the Bulls had a great chance as Brianna Shingary put a great corner kick into the box where Jackie Hall got her head on the ball but it went just high and out of play.
Jackie Hall made the save of the game in the 39th minute as she came out of nowhere and booted away a crossing attempt to a wide open striker in front of the cage with a sliding attempt.
As the second half struck, the Orange continued to put the pressure on as Laura Dougall made a huge diving stop to her left off of a free kick from Jackie Firenze.
A couple minutes later, Laura Dougall used her whole 6-foot frame to tip a shot from Firenze just over the top of the net, keeping the game scoreless.
With 10 minutes left in regulation, Jackie Hall once again saved a great chance as she blocked away the attempt on an open net by Sheridan Street.
After Laura made another big diving save in the 86th minute, the Bulls had their best opportunity of the match to score as Carissima Cutrona was dragged down in the box, giving the Bulls a penalty kick with just over a minute remaining in the match. On the ensuing penalty kick, Julia Benati was robbed as the Syracuse keeper read the shot and dove to her right to keep the ball from going in the net.
The Orange began the first overtime with a little extra hop in their step as they dominated the Bulls. Syracuse held the 6-0 edge in shots during the first overtime as Maya Pitts had the best chance but her hard shot from 15 yards out went just over the top of the UB net, keeping the game scoreless at the end of the first overtime.
In the 104th minute, Julia Benati received a great cross from Angel Hart but her shot went skipping off the cross bar and out of play.
Finally in the 108th minute the Bulls were able to notch the game-winning goal as Kassidy Kidd had a great shot that rang off the cross bar. The carom however went right to the right foot of Dana Lytle who buried the winner in the back of the net to give UB the victory.
Inside The Numbers
The game-winning goal scored by Dana Lytle in the 108th minute was the first goal of her UB career.

Eastern Michigan 3, Illinois Chicago 1

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Playing on Scicluna Field for the first time in the 2015 season, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team played through the heat and humidity to take down University of Illinois-Chicago, Sunday, Sept. 6 by a score of 3-1. Redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) registered two goals, including the game winner in the 18th minute to propel the Eagles to the home opening victory. Freshman goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) finished the day with three saves.
Possessing from the opening touch, the Eagles played the ball back to junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland). Recognizing the options in front of her, Washburn played a ball up and over the midfield and into the box. With the Flames' keeper leaving her line to attempt to corral Washburn's cross, Nason leaped in front of her. Getting her head on the ball before colliding with the keeper, Nason's header popped over the keeper and into the net, giving EMU a 1-nil lead three minutes into the match.
Following a series of opportunities for the Green and White, senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) played a cross in front of goal. With a UIC defender whiffing on the initial clearance, Nason headed in her second goal of the game to double Eastern Michigan's lead in the 18th minute.
With EMU holding a 2-nil advantage, the Flames pressed forward seeking their first goal of the game. After a few crosses and shots were handled by the Eagles, UIC's Emi Yamamoto controlled the ball 10-yards outside the box. Ripping a shot from deep, Yamamoto's shot hooked just inside the near-post to cut EMU's lead in half.
Leading 2-1 in the 33rd minute, Trapp switched fields to junior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin). Firing a one-timer, Tillar's shot rocketed off the crossbar and dribbled outside the box. Beating out a Flames defender to the deflection, Trapp's heel flick allowed junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) to deliver a ball back into the box but a whistle and collision ended the Eagles' threat.
Keeping the pressure on the Flames' defense, Tillar broke through the UIC backline. With room to work, Tillar dribbled down the sideline in front of the Eagles' bench towards the corner flag. As the UIC defense began to collapse around her, Tillar switched fields to senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial). Settling the ball at the edge of the box, Oddan crossed her defender before crossing back towards goal and blasted a shot into the back of the net. Scoring her first goal of the season, the Calgary, Alberta product put the Eagles' in front 3-1 in the 41st minute.
From that point on, the teams played to a defensive stand still despite scoring chances on both ends. EMU rode out the two-goal lead to a 3-1 victory, their third consecutive win in its home opener.
The Eagles return to the pitch Thursday, Sept. 10, in Detroit, Mich. with a match against the Detroit Titans. The game is set for 3 p.m.
Kent State 1, New Hampshire 1
Box Score
BURLINGTON, Vt. – In the final day of the TD Bank Classic hosted at the University of Vermont, the Kent State women's soccer team tied New Hampshire, 1-1, after two overtime periods at Virtue Field. The Golden Flashes are now 1-2-2 on the year, while New Hampshire moved to 2-1-3.
"We saw a much better effort today," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "I am proud of how the team bounced back and played well. We will continue to work on our game management so we can close games out."
After a scoreless first period, the Golden Flashes tallied the first goal of the game at the 48:57 mark. Sophomore Donavan Capehart (Orient, Ohio) collected a pass from junior forward Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario) and fired off a low shot to the left post that got by Mimi Borkan in the UVM goal. The goal was Capehart's second of the season.
New Hampshire came back to score the equalizer in the 65th minute when Caroline Murray chipped the ball over to Brooke Murphy who put the ball past Kent State goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald.
Both teams battled for the remainder of regulation, and through both overtime periods, but neither could score the go-ahead goal.
McDonald earned a career-high 10 saves for the Golden Flashes, four of which that came in extra minutes to move to 1-1-1 on the year. New Hampshire's Borkan tallied five saves and improved to 2-1-3 overall.
The Wildcats outshot Kent State 17-15 and led 7-5 in corner kicks. Sophomores Kristen Brots and Capehart led the Flashes' offense with three shots, while Abbit Lawson and Hellstrom both had two. New Hampshire's Murphy had a game-high six shots, including five on goal.
The Golden Flashes will now head to Indianapolis on Friday, Sept. 11 to take on the Butler Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
Florida International 1, Miami 0
Box Score
OXFORD, Ohio -- A much improved second half effort went unrewarded as the Miami soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Florida International on Sunday afternoon.
The RedHawks (2-3) dropped to 0-2 at home this season and fell for the third-straight time.
Both teams spent the first 15 minutes feeling each other out. While the Panthers spent the bulk of that time possessing the ball, few opportunities came of it.
The first shots of the contest weren't fired until 13 minutes in as Emily Baragar fired one attempt wide just inside the box. Miami countered with a run of its own as Rachel Marble sprung Haley Walter free down the right side, but her sliding shot drifted wide of the cage as well.
Perhaps the best opportunity in the first 20 minutes came off the foot of Paula Quintero, as she took a pass across the box and had a clean look from 16 yards out. Despite getting all of the shot, she fired it wide, leaving the contest scoreless.
The Red and White found some good spurts of offense on the counter attack, but were unable to find the back of the net. FIU went into its bench in the final 10 minutes of the half and generated three more shots and consecutive corner kicks, but was ultimately held off the board by the MU defense to leave the match scoreless at the half.
Miami's possession game took a complete 180 in the second half as a tweaked lineup hemmed FIU in its back third and yielded several great opportunities. The Red and White created a couple set pieces and got a head on a corner kick and a free kick that both went wide.
Free play also started delivering more chances for the RedHawks as Courtney Evans was fed behind the defense and headed a shot over Stephanie Trujillo that went just wide of the net. Later on, Maggie Scott got behind the defense, but was forced off at an angle and her shot was deflected away by Trujillo. Stephanie Dillon caused a turnover by the Panther defense and drilled a shot from the left side the Panther keeper smothered.
Despite the second half possession domination, MU had nothing to show for it as regulation wore on. In the 81st minute, a broken play left the ball loose in the middle and Madlen Weinhardt put the ball into the open net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. That goal obviously changed the complexion of the match as FIU played a conservative possession game and managed to grind off the remainder of the time to secure the win.
After getting outshot 6-2 in the first half, Miami flipped things around by holding a dominant 8-4 edge in second half shots. The Panthers held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks and had a few more set pieces out of free kicks as well. Vic Maniaci stopped three of the four shots she faced for Miami while Sophia Trujillo relieved Nevena Stojakovic at halftime and stopped all four shots she faced to pick up the win.
UW-Milwaukee 2, NIU 1
Box Score
DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team saw another early goal negated as the Huskies fell to UW-Milwaukee 2-1 on a steamy Sunday afternoon at the NIU Soccer Complex in DeKalb.
NIU started the contest very brightly and took an early lead in the 17th minute when Marisa Knott (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) scored her first goal of the season, bringing down a nice cross from Nicole Gobbo (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and finishing expertly into the bottom right corner.
The heat meant the game was played at a slow pace, with water breaks in both halves. But as the game wore on, it was the Panthers who adjusted to the conditions. Milwaukee tied the game early in the second half when Lourdes Onwuemeka tapped in a rebound after NIU goalkeeper Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) saved an initial shot from Kelsey Holbert.
The match then appeared headed for overtime as both teams balanced each other out throughout the second half in a very even battle. But eventually, the Panthers had the better of the play in the final 15 minutes and made it count, scoring the winning goal when Kelli Swenson headed the ball into the top left corner of the net after Onwuemeka had won the ball.
The Huskies (1-4-0) pressed for an equalizer but couldn’t find one against the stingy Panthers (2-2-0) defense that didn’t allow many opportunities after NIU controlled the first 20 minutes of the match.
"We fought really hard. We just need to take the next step in the process," NIU head coach John Ross said after the game. "We certainly believe in ourselves and have a lot of hope going forward."
The Panthers outshot the Huskies by a 14-6 margin, forcing Annala to make four saves in the match.
The NIU women’s soccer team will now take a road trip to the state of Texas next weekend. The Huskies will play the Baylor Bears on Friday night at 7 p.m. before facing the Louisiana-Lafayette Rajin’ Cajuns on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Both contests will be played in Waco, Texas.
Kentucky 3, Ohio 0
Box Score
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Ohio women’s soccer team dropped a hard fought battle to Kentucky on Sunday (Sept. 6), falling to the Wildcats 3-0 at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
“It’s frustrating to lose, but if you judge progress we competed much more than we did last year in the same game,” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “Score line was the same, but we had a lot more shots this year and their goal keeper has multiple saves. I take that as progress, but I don’t want to get carried away and say that it doesn’t hurt to lose. We’ve still got a long season ahead of us and we had a weekend full of learning that I think will make us be better down the road. “
The Bobcats (0-5-0) got the first shot of the game off the foot of Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.) in the second minute.
Kentucky (5-1-0) got on the board first a few minutes later when Zoe Swift scored the first goal of the game, putting the Wildcats up 1-0 in the eighth minute.
The Bobcats entered the half trailing 1-0, while registering three shots, two of them on goal.
Kentucky struck first in the second half, taking a 2-0 lead when Cara Ledman scored in the 49th minute when she beat the keeper near the post. The Wildcats added another goal in the 64th minute when Kelly Novak scored on a rebound off an end line cross, putting Kentucky up 3-0.
The Bobcats kept battling, when in the 65th minute, Stephanie Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky.) recorded her second shot on goal of the day and then her third in the 72nd minute.
“We competed well and we kept the ball in attack and we caused them some problems in our counter attack,” Rodgers said. “I think that Rianna Reese had a great game defensively. I think Stephanie Rowland showed how dangerous she can be in the attack and going after people. Overall, we competed at a higher level than we have in the past and that’s something to take away.”
Ohio finished the game with six total shots, four of them on goal. Rowland finished the game with four shots, three on goal, while Manso and Leah Sandercock (Strongsville, Ohio) each had one shot apiece.
In goal, Vanessa Cordoba (Bogota, Cundinamarca, Colombia) started the game and allowed one goal and registered one save in her 27 minutes. Erin Beurket (Milford, Ohio) finished the game, allowing two goals and registering three saves. As a team, the Bobcats also recorded three saves.
Ohio returns to Athens next weekend when they take on Robert Morris on Friday, Sept. 11. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m. at Chessa Field.
Loyola Marymount 1, Toledo 0 (2OT)
Box Score
LOS ANGELES, CA - Toledo ended its challenging six-match road trip to start the season with a heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime setback at Loyola Marymount on Sunday at Sullivan Field. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 1-5-0 of the year.
The Lions' (3-2-0) Melissa Lewis tapped in a cross from teammate Sarah Sanger with just seven seconds remaining in the second extra period to give the home team the last-second victory.
"This was a great battle between two teams who fought extremely hard," first-year head coach TJ Buchholz said. "Unfortunately for us, we just aren't catching the breaks right now."
LMU controlled the pace of play at the outset and collected a couple of shots and had a few corner kicks early on. With the Lions not able to convert, the Rockets settled in and pushed forward to the attack. UT ripped off three shots and a corner kick of its own in the opening 45 minutes but was unable to finish, and the match remained scoreless at the intermission.
The second half began much like the first, as the Lions applied great pressure in the attack. UT senior keeper Sam Tiongson was up to the challenge though, and made a very athletic save in the 54th minute to end the pressure. At the other end of the pitch, freshman Italia Biondi fired off three of her team-high six shots after halftime to pace the Rockets' attack.
"Biondi had a breakout match off the bench," Buchholz said. "She got herself in great position to shoot all day and had some quality looks at the goal."
Both teams saw quality chances to end the match with a "Golden Goal" in both overtime periods. Unfortunately for the Midnight Blue & Gold, LMU's Lewis found space deep in UT's goal box and deposited the cross from Sanger into the back of the frame for her first marker of the year, handing the Rockets the heartbreaking loss.
Toledo will now return to the "Glass City" for its home opener against Oakland on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
"It's going to be great to come home to Toledo," Buchholz said. "There is nothing like playing on your home field, and we're ready to defend our turf."

MACOMB, Ill. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four games after defeating Western Illinois 2-0 in 95-degree heat on the road on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos picked up goals from Irene Young and Emma Kahn, while Stephanie Heber made three saves to earn her third shutout of the season. WMU outshot WIU 14-4 overall and 5-3 in shots on goal.
"It was one of the hottest days of soccer in my recent memory," said head coach Nate Norman. "I was still impressed with the intensity and passion that both teams played with. Western Illinois is definitely a good team and they made it very difficult on us. Overall I was very proud of how we played."
The Broncos took an early 1-0 lead on Young's second goal of the season. Junior midfielder Liz Abro played a cross into the box and Young headed it into the net.
WMU held its 1-0 lead into the second half. WIU's Daniela Salinas was cited for a red card in the 68th minute to put the Leathernecks down a player. Western Michigan was able to take control of the game and Kahn added her fifth goal of the season in the 82nd minute. A failed clearance off a corner kick led the ball to Young, who found Kahn for the goal.
Western Michigan continues its road swing at reigning Big East Champions DePaul on Friday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m.
