AKRON, Ohio – Freshman Shea O'Brien (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) scored with less than one minute to play in regulation to give the Akron women's soccer team a 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure to remain undefeated Friday night in St. Bonaventure N.Y.
O'Brien received a pass from junior Sarah Sivic (Broadview Heights, Ohio) as she ran through the mid-field. She continued to push the ball up the field and into the box. O'Brien found herself with an open look and slotted the ball past the keeper on her near right post to give the Zips a 2-1 advantage with 17 seconds to play.
The goal by O'Brien was the first goal of her collegiate career. It took just eight shots before the freshman was able to find the back of the net.
"A solid performance on the night by the team. I felt we dominated possession but our execution in front of the goal could have been better," said Akron head coach Noreen Herlihy. "The biggest positive was when we conceded a goal late in the game we didn't panic. The players immediately went forward in numbers and Shea O'brien, who was superb all night, scored a great game winner"
As a team Akron (3-0-1) put eight shots on goal in 20 attempts. St. Bonaventure (1-2-2) was limited to just four shots with three on goal.
Sivic led the way for the Zips and tallied six shots on the night, senior Holly Ohradzansky (Avon, Ohio) and freshman Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio) added three shots each.
Junior keeper Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) made two saves and now holds a .727 save percentage on the year.
Baughman collected the first shot of the game for both squads at the four minute mark but her shot sailed high over the cross bar.
Junior Karin Norman (Stocksund, Sweden) had the first chance to score for the Zips in the 13' as she sent a shot on goal that was saved by the Bonnies goalie Beth Moore.
Sivic continues to play good soccer as she scored her second goal in as many games at the 24:20 mark to give the Zips a 1-0 advantage. The Bonnies attempted to clear the ball but Sivic stole possession and sent it past the keeper.
At halftime the Zips recorded 10 shots from seven different players with four on goal. The Akron defense put the pressure on St. Bonnaventure as they were held without a shot.
St. Bonaventure's Jessica Scruggs recorded the first shot of the contest for the Bonnies at the 52' mark but Hegeman was able to make the save.
Akron had multiple chances to try increase their lead getting off eight shots in the second half. Baughman had two shots on goal and senior Hannah Werth (Bloomington, Minn.) chipped in with one on goal that were saved by goalie Christina Sarokan who subbed in for the starter in the 52'.
The Bonnies leading scorer Abby Maiello netted the equalizing goal in the 83' minute off a deflection to the Hegeman's right. Maiello's shot was just the third of the match for St. Bonnaventure.
Akron's ten goals to start the year are the most through the first four games in program history.
The Zips are undefeated through the first four games of the year for the first time since the 2008 season.
Akron continue's in the Alumni Classic hosted by St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Sept. 6 against the Cornell Big Red. First kick is set for noon.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Ball State soccer team battled LSU to a 1-1 draw Friday on the opening night of this weekend's “Stomp in the Swamp.”
Elaina Musleh scored the goal for the Cardinals (3-1-1) in their first ever game against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference.
“It was a great battle tonight,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “I’m really proud of our team because we faced some challenges. We played a high caliber SEC school in front of a good crowd on their home field, we traveled a long way to get here, and we battled the heat. The odds were stacked against us, but I’m excited we overcame each of those hurdles.”
The odds looked even greater when unbeaten LSU (3-0-2) struck first on a goal from Jorian Baucom in the 34th minute and took a 1-0 lead into the half.
But Ball State wasted little time evening the score after the break. The Cardinals converted on their only corner kick opportunity of the night when Leah Mattingly fed Musleh for a header in the 50th minute.
It was the first goal of the season for Musleh and the ninth of her Ball state career, and it helped the Cardinals to their first positive result against a Power 5 conference team since a 2006 win over Northwestern.
“It’s a sign of how far we have come that we can go toe-to-toe against a high profile team like this,” Roberts said. “We want to show constant progression as we go toward our conference schedule, and we did that in every aspect tonight.”
The teams played scoreless through the final 40 minutes of regulation and both 10-minute overtime periods. Each team managed to get two shots off in overtime.
Both of Ball State’s looks came in the second OT, but a Chelsy Swackhamer attempt sailed wide and a look by Kalynn Flanagan was blocked.
Ball State, which is allowing less than one goal per game, turned in another stout defensive performance, limiting LSU to only two shots on goal for the game. The teams combined for 16 total shots (eight for each team) and five shots on goal.
“I thought our back four were unbelievable tonight,” Roberts said. “In the middle, the work rate demonstrated by both Elaina and Chelsy was outstanding.”
The Cardinals will remain in Baton Rouge to close out this weekend's event Sunday at 11 a.m. CT (Noon ET) against Middle Tennessee.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Madison Costner scored a goal and Zoie Reed posted the shutout – the first in the respective collegiate careers for both freshman – as the Central Michigan women’s soccer team defeated Youngstown State, 2-0, in a non-conference match on Friday.
It was the first win of the season for the Chippewas (1-2-1), who last week dropped a 4-3 double-overtime match at Nebraska and a 1-0 decision at Creighton.
“It’s good to come back after the week we had after last weekend, and the first week of classes, to come down here and sort of grind it out,” said CMU coach Peter McGahey, whose team returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 10, with a non-leaguer at Michigan.
“I said to the girls after, ‘Congratulations, well done, well earned. Nobody gives you anything for free at this level; everything has to be earned,’” McGahey said. “We’ve got some things to clean up, we’ll get better, and on we go. We’re building and continuing to move forward.”
Costner’s goal was of highlight-reel quality and the timing could not have been better.
“They had a corner kick with 15 seconds left in the first half,” McGahey said. “We got it cleared and Adriana Ramon cleared it up to Madison and she went on a 45-yard dribble and scored with 4 seconds to go.
“That took us into the second half with a lot of momentum.”
Lauren Sherry scored her second goal of the season, unassisted with under four minutes remaining, to ice it. Sherry has recorded two shots on the year, both of which have found the back of the net.
Reed, making her third consecutive start, made four saves as the Chippewas outshot Youngstown State, 14-5, and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. It marked the second consecutive game that CMU has won both statistical measures.
“Anytime you get your first collegiate shutout and play as well as Zoie did, hats off to her,” McGahey said. “That’s a good confidence-building performance. It takes a team effort and we used a few players to keep that throttle open. Really good team effort.
“It was a grind-it-out day and a little hard to find our rhythm. We defended maturely and confidently at times. It was a day when it was a little sloppy and a little ugly, but I felt we put in a good shift of work tonight.”

NORMAL, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Returning to the pitch under the lights, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team closed out their season-opening five-game road trip against Illinois State University, Friday, Sept. 4, at Adelaide Street Field. After a two hour rain delay and 110 minutes of play, the Eagles and Redbirds drew even at two. Redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) tallied two goals for EMU, while freshman goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) recorded a career-high eight saves.
With a majority of the opening 20 minutes spent in the midfield, it was evident the Redbirds and Eagles stacked up evenly early on. While the Green and White strikers worked to find their opportunities, the EMU defense held strong on the backline. Rallying around the strong play of the defense, the Eagles first goal came courtesy of a counter attack. Redshirt junior Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London) worked the ball up field, connecting with Nason near goal. Using her speed, Nason collected Bentley's pass and buried her first goal of the season to give EMU the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
More than 10 minutes after Illinois State leveled the score at one, Nason came up on the end of another cross by the Eagles. Junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) played a ball into the box to Nason. Breaking through the Redbirds' backline, Nason saw an opening and ripped a shot past the reach of ISU's keeper to put the Eagles in front 2-1.
After ISU scored the equalizer in the 43rd minute, the teams headed to halftime even at two.
With four goals scored in the first half, the second half featured a defensive clinic as the teams combined for 18 shots without a goal. Benefiting from key defensive stops by a veteran cohort and highlight worthy saves by Williams, the Eagles withstood 11 shots by the Redbirds to force overtime.
In overtime the Green and White controlled possession, leading to a 2-0 edge in shots. EMU's first opportunity came in the 94th minute. Redshirt senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) blasted a shot from the top of the box. Sending a shot up and over a defender, a punch save by the ISU keeper kept Oddan from her first goal of the season and left the score tied at two.
Moments later, senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) was shoved to the grass, giving EMU a free kick 15 yards outside the box. Stepping to the ball, Washburn cleared the five-man wall but her shot was corralled by the ISU keeper on the goal line.
Washburn's free kick served as the last scoring chance for either team, forcing a second overtime.
Like the first extra period, the Eagles maintained possession for most of the final 10 minutes. Despite three shots and a couple set piece plays, ISU's defensive play kept EMU from scoring, ending the match in a 2-2 draw. With the draw, the Eagles close out their five-game road trip with a 1-3-1 record.
The Green and White take Scicluna Field for the first time this season, Sunday, Sept. 6, when they play host to University of Illinois Chicago. In last year's meeting, the Eagles escaped the Windy City with a 4-2 victory over the Flames. EMU's home opener is set to start at 1 p.m.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Kent State women's soccer team was edged 1-0 by the University of Vermont in the first day of the TD Bank Classic. The loss dropped the Golden Flashes to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Catamounts improved to 2-1-0.
"I am extremely disappointed in our first half performance," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "However, we gave a much better effort in the second, but we need to expect more from ourselves for 90 minutes."
Vermont freshman Casey Garfinkel tallied the lone goal just 14 minutes into the first period. Sophomore Sarah Martin earned a free kick that deflected off a Kent State defender and Garfinkel was there to get one past Kent State goalkeeper Katie Kingsbury.
Junior Jenna Hellstrom had a great chance to even the score in the 23rd minute, but her flick past UVM goalkeeper, Ally Ramos, went wide.
In the 32nd minute, Kent State's Kingsbury exited the game due to injury, but senior defender Madison Helterbran stepped in and made her collegiate debut between the pipes. Kingsbury made two saves in her 31:42 in goal.
Just before the half, sophomore Mackenzie Lesnick had a great look from the top of the 18-yard box but it was straight at Ramos.
In the first 45 minutes, Vermont outshot Kent State 6-3 and led 3-1 in corner kicks.
The Flashes' picked up the intensity after the intermission and had some good looks on the Vermont goal but could not connect.
In the 60th minute, Hellstrom went one on one with the Vermont keeper but her shot missed wide. Vermont countered just two minutes later, but Helterbran came up with a great save to keep Kent State deficit to one. In the 82nd minute, Donavan Capehart tried to score the equalizer but Ramos picked up another save.
Vermont ended the night leading 14-10 in shots, but Kent State won the corner kick battle, 5-4. Ramos earned the win in net and earned seven saves, and Kingsbury was given the loss. Helterbran tallied six saves for the Golden Flashes after 58:18 in net.
Kent State will now play New Hampshire at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6.

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Despite second half goals by Alexis Milesky and Stephanie Rowland, the Ohio women's soccer team fell to Marshall 3-2 on Friday (Sept. 4) evening at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
"It showed what we're capable of," head coach Aaron Rodgers said. "We played a pretty good first half and we let in goals that are very correctable. Marshall is a good tea.. I think that they had a couple of really good players and they're a solid team. We gave up a goal at the very beginning of the second half, which we have to come out and start early and start faster. Then early after the lightening delay we gave up that third goal. These are things that we will do better on and we will learn from."
Marshall (4-1-0) struck first, talking a 1-0 lead when Jordan Parkhurst scored on a shot from outside the box that was deflected high and over line.
The Bobcats (0-4-0) had two good chances in the first half, once in the 26th minute on a shot by Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and again in the 27th minute, once again by Manso.
In the first half, Ohio recorded four shots, two of them on goal.
Marshall opened up the second half, taking a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute when Erin Simmons scored on a ball outside the box from the right.
Immediately following the goal, the game was delayed for an hour by lighting.
The Herd added on to their lead when play resumed, taking a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute when Simmons scored her second goal of the game.
Manso created another chance for the Bobcats, registering her third shot on goal of the game in the 58th minute.
Ohio continued to fight, and a little more than a minute later, Ohio got on the board in the 60th minute when Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) scored her first goal of the season, cutting the Marshall lead to 3-1.
The Bobcats continued to create chances, with Milesky and Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky.) recording shots in the 68th and 72nd minute, respectively.
Ohio's pressure finally paid off when Rowland cut the Marshall lead to 3-2 when she netted her first career goal in the 87th minute when Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.) centered the ball to Rowland who then chipped it from the left into the right side of the goal.
Ohio pressured until the very end, with Jaggers firing the ball at the Marshall net as time expired, however the Bobcats would fall by the final of 3-2.
"Something clicked in our heads and we were very good and created chance after chance after chance," Rodgers said. "We outshot them in the second half. We had more corner kicks then they did. We just came up a little short at the end. The girls fought hard until the very last minute and we can take a lot from that."
In total, Ohio registered 13 shots, seven of them on goal. Leading the Bobcats was Manso who recorded five shots, three of them on goal in her 84 minutes of action. Milesky had two shots and a goal and Jaggers also added two shots for Ohio. Rowland registered four shots, two on goal and one goal for the Bobcats.
In goal, Erin Beurket (Milford, Ohio) got the start for the Bobcats, allowing three goals on four chances.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday, Sept. 6 when they travel to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. inside the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. The game can be seen on the SEC Network Plus or the WatchESPN App.

MALIBU, CA – Toledo continued its ultra-competitive non-league schedule on Friday and suffered a 3-0 setback against No. 19 Pepperdine (4-1-0) at Eddy D. Field Stadium. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 1-4-0 on the year.
The nationally ranked Waves netted three second-half goals to gain some revenge against UT, who defeated them 3-2 back on Sept. 8, 2013 at Scott Park when they were the No. 22 team in the country.
The first half saw pressure from both front lines. PU earned three shots within the first seven minutes of the contest, before UT countered and ripped off two of its own. Neither team would convert though in the opening 45 minutes, as the home team held a slim 6-5 edge in shots. Senior Megan Connor, sophomore Regan Price and sophomore Sophie Pohl each took two shots during the opening stanza for the Midnight Blue & Gold.
"We played great in the first half," first-year head coach TJ Buchholz said. "We definitely had some chances. Megan put a ball off the post and Regan's shot went just wide. Overall we did a lot of things well in the first half, but we were unable to finish."
Pepperdine then controlled the pace of play after the intermission and scored three markers within the first 16 minutes to pull off the home victory. Bri Visalli opened the scoring in the 49th minute, followed by a pair of goals from Jamie Van Horn off set pieces to secure the three-goal margin. PU ended up outshooting the Rockets, 14-7, during the match.
"Even though the score didn't show it, I thought our defense played an excellent game," Buchholz said. "Unfortunately, we made some costly mistakes during dead ball situations, and the Waves were able to take advantage."
Toledo will wrap up its season-opening six-match road swing against Loyola Marymount (2-2-0) on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 4:00 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
Western Michigan 2, Notre Dame 2
Box Score
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women’s soccer team played even with No. 6 ranked Notre Dame in its 2015 home opener and came out with a 2-2 double-overtime tie Friday evening at the WMU Soccer Complex.
WMU was outshot 21-3 by the Fighting Irish, whose record moves to 4-0-1 while the Broncos move to 2-1-1 this season. This was the second top-25 team that WMU has taken to double-overtime as the Broncos fell to No. 14 Wisconsin 2-1 in double-overtime earlier this season.
The Fighting Irish took a 1-0 lead late in the first half at the 40:31 mark when Anna Gilbertson struck from the left side of the goal and hit the top right corner of the net. WMU answered when sophomore forward Emma Kahn scored early in the second half in the 63rd minute, but the Fighting Irish grabbed the lead back less than three minutes later as Meghan Doyle scored a goal at the 65:07 mark.
Kahn connected on her second goal of the game at the 79:48 mark to tie it at 2-2 Junior Olivia Vollmers set up the goal with a pass from the right side that allowed Kahn to knock it in passed the goalkeeper.
“We played fantastic tonight. We were down twice and got back into it, I was proud of the way our girls were able to hold them and compete today,” WMU head coach Nate Norman said. “I think this gives us great confidence. To compete like that against one of the best teams in the country, it should give us great confidence and belief going forward.”
WMU was held to zero shots in both overtimes as Notre Dame had two shots in the first and three in the second, but could not convert.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Heber made a game-high four saves for the Broncos while Lexi Nicholas did not record a save for the Fighting Irish.
Western Michigan will travel to Macomb, Ill., to face Western Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. Following the game with Western Illinois, the Broncos travel to DePaul on Friday, Sept. 18 and then return to Kalamazoo for a string of three straight home games beginning Friday, Sept. 18 with Illinois State.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Penguins (2-3-0).
