FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team spent the majority of Sunday’s game in the offensive third, controlling the action in a 3-0 victory at IPFW.
The Cardinals (3-1) racked up 32 shot attempts in the game and limited the Mastodons (0-4) to only five on the way to their second win of the weekend.
“This was the most consistent performance we have had across all areas,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “I am really happy with the way we are creating offensively right now. We still aren't converting at a high rate, and I believe once we do that we could really take off.”
Abigail Boswell scored for the second straight game, while fellow freshman Emily Scott registered her first collegiate goal. But Lauren Hall's free-kick goal in the opening half proved to be the only scoring the Cardinals would need.
Alyssa Heintschel and Bailey Coppedge combined on Ball State's second shutout of the season. Coppedge, a freshman, saw the first action of her career in the second half.
“We played well defensively,” Roberts said. “Lorina (White) and Orla (Travers-Gillespie) were strong at center back, and our outsides did a good job pushing forward.”
Hall’s goal was the only scoring in the first half, but Scott quickly put the Cardinals in gear in the second, scoring off a pass from Madison Oyer only 34 seconds after the break.
Boswell added some more insurance 12 minutes later, rebounding a saved shot off the foot of Chelsy Swackhamer and finding the net.
“It was great to see our freshmen get involved in the attack again,” Roberts said. “I’m happy for Emily to score her first goal, and it came when we needed a spark offensively. We were able to get a lot of our younger players some quality time today.”
Ball State will head back on the road next weekend, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., for games Friday against LSU and Sunday against Middle Tennessee.

The UB attack didn't let up as just a minute later Carissima Cutrona put a shot off the post and her rebound came out to Celina Carrero who saw her shot saved by the keeper.

Finally in the 82nd minute the Bulls were able to put the game away as Andrea Niper found the back of the net for her first of the season. The Bulls played a short corner pass from Brianna Shingary to Julia Benati who whipped the ball in to Niper who finished off the goal.

Creighton 1, Central Michigan 0
Box Score
OMAHA, Neb. – Victory was elusive.
Optimism, however, was not.
The Central Michigan women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Creighton in the Bluejays’ Morrison Stadium on Sunday, two days after CMU fell, 4-3, in double-overtime at Nebraska.
Against the Cornhuskers, the Chippewas (0-2-1) overcame a three-goal deficit in the final 14-plus minutes to send it to extra time.
The lone tally in Sunday’s match was an own-goal.
“You don’t do what we did on Friday night by luck,” said CMU coach Peter McGahey, whose team plays a non-leaguer at Youngstown State on Friday, Sept. 4. “And I think you don’t continue to respond on Sunday and continue to be the more aggressive team in that match …
“You can take that away from (Sunday) and some really good times together as a team and put it in perspective and say ‘Let’s move forward and build from it.’
“Certainly more positives for me than negatives.”
The Bluejays’ goal came with less than a minute remaining in the first half. That it was an own-goal and that it came just before the intermission were two factors that could have had a devastating emotional effect on the Chippewas, McGahey said.
“It sort of takes the air out of your sails going in to halftime,” he said. “But we continued to create chances in the second half. KK (Kaelyn Korte) rattled the crossbar. Some days you create chances and they just don’t go in, and I think that’s a little bit of the day today.
“We had a good start. Couldn’t seem to put it away.”
The Chippewas outshot Crieghton (3-1-0), 16-14, and CMU had five corner kicks to the Bluejays’ three. It marked the first time this season that CMU has held the edge in either statistical category.
CMU goalkeeper Zoie Reed made fives.
“I love the team, the tenacity, the character, the balance,” McGahey said. “Just a matter of plugging away and I believe the results are going to come.”

CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Closing out play at the Loyola Invitational on Sunday, Aug. 30, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team grinded out a 1-0 victory over tournament host Loyola University Chicago at the Loyola Soccer Complex. Senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) netted the game winning goal in the 64th minute while freshman Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) earned the win, debuting in goal for the Eagles.
The 1-0 shutout moves the Eagles to 1-3 on the season and 1-1 at the Loyola Invitational. For their parts in the Eagles' win, Trapp and junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) earned Loyola Invitational All-Tournament honors.
Opening the match with the fourth different starting lineup in as many games, the Green and White turned to Williams in goal with a veteran crew standing in front of her. While the Ramblers started the match with possession, the Eagles' strikers created ample opportunities in the opening minutes.
EMU's first scoring chance came in the third minute when redshirt-freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) sent a cross into the box. Charging through the defense of the Ramblers, junior Madison Hirsch's (Troy, Mich.-Troy) attempted header flew wide of goal. Hirsch's header was the first of many opportunities for the Eagles in the opening half with each shot soaring wide or high of goal.
With shots 5-4 in favor of Loyola, the teams played to a scoreless deadlock at halftime.
Out of the half, the Ramblers pressed forward looking for the go-ahead goal. The strategy created scoring chances for Loyola but Williams and the Eagles' defense stood strong, jumpstarting opportunities on the counter.
After sending shot after shot wide on the attacking end and denying Loyola on the defensive end of the pitch, the Eagles broke into the scoring column in the 64th minute. Earning a corner after a ball played up field by Trapp was deflected across the end line, the Green and White took their posts in front of goal. Jogging in from the backline, Washburn stepped to the corner. Delivering a cross in front of goal, Washburn connected with the head of Trapp. With a quick flick of the head, Trapp sent the cross past the reach of the Ramblers' keeper, giving EMU a 1-0 lead. Scoring first for the first time this season, Trapp's goal ended a 283 minute shutout streak for Loyola.
With Loyola seeking an equalizer, the Eagles had numbers on a counter. Moving the ball through the midfield, Trapp played give-and-go with senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) before booting a ball up field for Nason. As the Eagles' forwards rushed the box, Nason played a ball in, connecting with the knee of freshman Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name). Colliding with her defender, Davis' knee redirected the cross from Nason but a diving save by the Ramblers' keeper kept the Eagles' advantage to one.
Pressing forward the Ramblers tested Williams but the Kansas City, Missouri native held her ground making save after save as Loyola ripped shots from all over the pitch.
The Eagles close out their season-opening five-game road trip Friday, Sept. 4, in Normal, Ill. where they face the Redbirds of Illinois State University at 7 p.m. with hopes of building off of Sunday's success.
Evansville 2, Miami 1
Box Score
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Two Evansville goals in the first 18 minutes dug the Miami soccer team into a hole it could not climb out of in a 2-1 road loss on Sunday.
Miami (2-2) falls to .500 on the season after losing its second consecutive match, the first time it’s dropped two straight since a five-match losing skid in 2013.
“We are a good team struggling with some issues right now,” head coach Bobby Kramig said. “We’ll work through it and I have no doubt we’ll emerge in good shape. There’s nothing here that can’t be fixed and I am fully confident in our team’s ability to rise to the challenge and turn things around.”
The Purple Aces (1-3) nearly struck early on as Molly Lear fired a shot that rang off the post in the seventh minute, leading to a corner kick that was successfully fended off by the Red and White. Miami’s first shot came off a corner kick in the 10th minute as the ball reached Haley Walter, but her attempt missed.
Evansville poured on more pressure following that Miami set piece and capitalized in the 13th minute when Sara Osinski cashed in on a rebound from Bronwyn Boswell’s shot that rang off the crossbar. The RedHawks countered by creating another corner kick, where Jess Bronke’s cross caught the head of Katie Mazurek, but Simone Busby was there to make the save.
A corner kick led to another UE tally when Lear’s cross got to Olivia Shafer, who headed one in to make it 2-0 with 27 minutes left in the opening frame.
With Evansville owning a two-goal lead and a 7-2 shot advantage, Miami finally began creating offense at the other end. MU fired three consecutive shots, but Busby stopped both of the attempts that were on goal to keep the cushion intact going into halftime. Evansville held an 11-6 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes of play while both teams attempted three corner kicks.
Play slowed down in the second half as UE defended with a two-goal lead. The Purple Aces held a 3-1 shot advantage in the first 20 minutes of the half, bogging down the RedHawks’ offense. MU broke through in the 69th minute when Korrie Sauder finished a crossing feed from Stephanie Dillon to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 21:33 to go.
While that goal drew Miami closer and invigorated its attack, that was all it would get offensively in the second half. The Purple Aces stood their ground to hold off the Red and White’s comeback bid.
Evansville finished the contest with a 17-11 advantage in shot attempts and took five corner kicks to Miami’s three. Busby turned away seven of the eight shots she saw from MU while Vic Maniaci stopped four of six shots at the other end.
Miami returns to action on Friday night when it heads to Wright State for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Omaha 2, Northern Illinois 1

OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman forward Taylor Sarver (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) scored an early goal - the first of her collegiate career - but the Northern Illinois University women's soccer team conceded two late goals to Nebraska-Omaha as the Huskies lost to the Mavericks, 2-1, on Sunday at Caniglia Field in Omaha, Neb.
The Huskies (1-3) controlled most of the match against the Mavericks (1-1-1) but suffered a third consecutive disappointing defeat after not making the most of their periods of ascendency and scoring chances, which frustrated NIU head coach John Ross.
"It's tough because our team put everything they had on the field, but we have to be able to finish a game," Ross said. "We will get back to practice tomorrow and get better."
Sunday's contest began brightly for NIU as the Huskies looked to respond from Friday's defeat to Creighton. After earning a corner kick in the first two minutes and pressuring the Mavericks, the Huskies opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Sarver pounced on a loose ball in the box and finished for her first career tally.
NIU continued to pressure throughout the remainder of the first half and deep into the second half, maintaining its 1-0 lead by combining fluid offensive movements with stingy defense. Freshman goalkeeper MacKenzie Lee (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) and junior defender Jackie Wandt (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) entered the NIU starting lineup and impressed, with Lee making four saves in the match.
But even though the Huskies finished the match with a 15-10 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, the Mavericks found a late goal-scoring wind that turned the match around after NIU looked set to earn a comfortable victory. Kyla Booker headed in the tying goal in the 73rd minute before Marin Dregelid fired in the game-winner with a rocket of a 25-yard strike just five minutes later at 77:53.
The Huskies had several chances to get back in the game in the final minutes, with Haley Cummings (Spring, Texas/Home School) and Nicole Gobbo (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) going close to scoring, but it wasn't meant to be for NIU.
NIU women's soccer returns home for its next match on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. against Milwaukee at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex in DeKalb.
Cleveland State 2, Ohio 0
Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio women’s soccer team kicked off the 2015 home slate of its schedule on Sunday afternoon, falling to Cleveland State, 2-0 at Chessa Field.
The Bobcats (0-3-0) and the Vikings (3-0-1) both completed a scoreless first half. Ohio tallied six total shot attempts in the first while Cleveland State registered two.
“I think we started the first half really well and created some good chances,” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “I think there are a lot of good things to take away from this game based on creating attacks and building attacks. We have to get a little bit better and when we concede a goal we can’t feel frustrated or down on ourselves and to go back out and respond back with a goal. We got out of our rhythm a little bit after we gave up the goal and they capitalized on it, so credit to Cleveland State for finishing those chances.”
The Vikings scored a quick goal in the 59th minute from 20 yards out into the left side of the net after a goal was retracted from Ohio’s scoreboard for an offsides violation.
Cleveland State added to its lead in the 68th minute striking the ball to the left side of freshman goalkeeper Erin Beurket (Milford, Ohio) off of a rebound five feet out.
Ohio out-shot the Vikings 11-5 in the second half. Overall, the Bobcats recorded 17 shots with eight of them on goal. Offensively, junior Alexis Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) would lead Ohio with six shots and three of them on goal.
“Lexie [Milesky] played really well today and I think as a group we played well, there’s a lot of good things that we can take away from it,” Rodgers said. “It’s always frustrating to get a loss but we out sot them and had more shots on goal then they did and we had more corner kicks. We just need to be a little bit more solid defensively and convert the chances we’ve been creating.”
In goal for Ohio, sophomore Vanessa Cordoba (Bogota, Cundinamarca, Colombia) and Beurket would each register one save in the first and second halves respectively. Cordoba allowed zero goals while Buerket allowed two.
Up next, Ohio will hit the road to battle with Marshall on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
Western Michigan 3, Illinois-Chicago 0

CHICAGO -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team picked up its second straight 3-0 win after beating the Illinois-Chicago Flames on the road on Sunday.
Candice Uhl, Irene Young and Maria Jaramillo all scored goals in the win and Stephanie Heber needed to make just two saves to earn her second-straight shutout. The Broncos dominated the shots statistic, outshooting the Flames 23-6 overall and 11-2 in shots on goal.
"I thought we overall played a very good game," said head coach Nate Norman. "I thought UIC was very good and made it difficult for us at times, but I was happy how our girls responded. We were very good in the attacking third and created a lot of chances."
Uhl gave Western Michigan an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute after she took a pass from Young and booted it into the low-middle of the box for her first goal of the season.
WMU took its 1-0 lead into the half but struck just 1:11 into the second half when Alyssa Smith fired a shot and Young put in the rebound for her first goal of the season. The assist was Smith's first collegiate point.
In the 75th minute Jaramillo put the game away and extended the lead to 3-0. Tiffany Buckler created a turnover and found Heather Piccariello, who passed it off to Jaramillo for the shot from seven-yards out for her first goal of the season. Buckler also tallied her first collegiate assist on the goal.
Western Michigan's regular season home-opener is set for Friday at 4 p.m. against nationally ranked Notre Dame.
