NIAGARA, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team played into double-overtime and came out with a 0-0 draw Friday night in its first road game of the season against the Niagara Purple Eagles in Niagara, N.Y.
"We were up against a strong physical team and are pleased with the effort shown by the players. We couldn't have asked anymore of them," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "Defensively we were solid and we will continue to work hard to improve each week in all facets of the game. We still have plenty of work to do but it was a decent result on the road and we can take a lot of positives from tonight."
The first shot of the game came off the foot of Niagara's Eva Bachmann that was blocked by an Akron defender two and a half minutes into play. The Zips (1-0-1) registered their first shot just one minute later at the 3:24 mark but junior Karin Norman's (Stocksund, Sweden) shot was wide of the goal.
At the 20:33 minute mark, Akron had another look at the goal when freshman Shea O'Brien (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) booted a shot that ended up wide of the net.
Akron would not record another shot in the half until time was winding down at the end of the half (44:35) when senior Katie George (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) attempted a shot but a Niagara defender blocked it.
The Purple Eagles (0-1-1) outshot the Zips in the first half 5-3.
Neither team registered a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of the match.
The Zips came out of the halftime break aggressive as sophomore Amy Dean (Liberty Township, Ohio) sent a shot that was blocked two minutes into the half (47:38).
Junior goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) recorded her first save on the night at the 56' mark on a shot sent by Niagara's Bachmann.
Freshman Kiana Zuk (Windsor, Ontario) sent the first shot of her career wide at the 80'.
At the end of regulation the score remained locked at zero. Akron had five shots from five different players in the books. Niagara sent 11 shots and three on goal.
In the first overtime period both teams recorded only one shot combined. The Purple Eagles Hayley Besaw had an open look at the net but Hegeman denied her attempt.
In the final 10 minutes of play the Zips fired off two shots. O'Brien's second shot of the night sailed wide of the goal and George's second shot of the game went high of the cross bar.
Following 110 minutes of play Akron recorded seven shots. Niagara recorded 15 shots for the night and four were on goal.
Hegeman recorded four saves all coming in the second half and first overtime period.
Junior Abby Gindlesberger (Canton, Ohio) received a yellow card in the second overtime period (109.42)
The Zips were without its leading scorer sophomore Raechel Eck (Sterling Heights, Mich.) as she tore her ACL midweek at practice. Eck will be out the remiander of the season.
Up next for the Zips, they play host to the Cleveland State Vikings on Tuesday, Sept, 1, at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in Akron, Ohio. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
Ball State 2, Wright State 1
Box Score
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State soccer team used a pair of first-half goals to take down Wright State, 2-1, in its first home game Friday evening at the Briner Sports Complex.
Freshman Abigail Boswell and junior Gabby Veldman scored for the Cardinals, while Alyssa Heintschel made three saves on four shots on goal. Boswell’s goal marked the first of her collegiate career.
Veldman scored her second goal of the season when she attacked the net straight on, adding some insurance in just the 17th minute for a two-goal advantage. Boswell’s opening goal was a feed across the field from Kelcy Fiser after a free kick.
The Cardinals shut out Wright State through the first half, leading 2-0, with Ball State racking up a 12-4 advantage in shot attempts. Scoring just 12 minutes into the second half, Wright State’s Paige Aguilera got the Raiders on the board, although the team ultimately fell to Ball State in total attempted shots 25-8 through the 90 minutes.
“I felt the girls were much improved from last weekend, which was a very similar style to what they played against at Lipscomb and they dealt with it a lot better,” Ball State head coach Craig Roberts said. “We all did well for a bigger portion of the game. It still needs to be tweaked a little bit, and I think we can be a bit more consistent, but for the most part it was much improved so I was delighted with that.”
Persevering through a physical game which included a total of 23 fouls and three yellow cards, Ball State’s senior Jenna Finke was awarded the lone penalty kick of the match after a physical battle with Wright State defenders. The attempt was stopped when Raiders goalkeeper Halle Pyle dove fully outstretched to capture the ball.
Wright State managed to get a couple shots off in the closing minutes, but the Cardinals kept the Raiders from forcing an overtime to preserve the victory. Wright State also held the advantage of three corner kicks to Ball State’s two.
“Wright State is a very good team, and I think they are going to do extremely well this season and for us to create that offense in the opening half was really beneficial for us,” Roberts said. “We just need to become consistent with doing that in the coming games. We knew that they were going to come out strong in the second half because they had to dig deep to get those two goals back so we knew they were going to be a lot more direct, which they were, and we had to contest with that. So it ended up us being patient behind the ball and work on a few fundamental areas. Overall we did well as the game went on.”
The victory lifted Ball State to an improved 2-1 record, while Wright State dropped to 1-2. The Cardinals will take on five road matches before returning home again Sept. 25 to host Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan at 5 p.m.
Morehead State 2, Bowling Green 1
Box Score
Morehead, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of 2015 in a hard-fought 2-1 overtime defeat Friday evening at Morehead State University in the Falcons' first road contest of the season.
"We definitely competed for the entire game and had some really dangerous chances, but defensively we could have done a better job managing the pressure at times, specifically in overtime," head coach Lindsay Basalyga said.
Morehead State earned the victory with a goal in the 99th minute of play, following an aggressive match as evidenced by each team receiving a yellow card during the match. That goal came after each team scored in a five-minute stretch of the second half to break a scoreless tie.
The first half highlighted strong defensive efforts by both teams, with each goal keeper recording three saves in the period. BGSU created a few dangerous opportunities, as the team was able to get off eight total shots, led by Erica Hubert with three and senior captain Haley Parkinson with two.
The Falcons fought off two Eagle corner kicks, with the shot off the first kick going wide and the second missing high.
Sophomore Mikaela Couch's shot in the 21st minute hit the crossbar, and Alexa Cheripko's attempt 20 seconds later was saved by Eagle keeper Kaitlyn Murphy.
The three shots on goal Lauren Cadel faced were the most she has seen in a half thus far this season. She recorded five total saves in the game.
The beginning of the second half looked much like the first, with no score through 15 minutes. However, Morehead State scored on a penalty kick in the 61st minute to get on the board first. The goal was Cadel's first allowed all season.
With the Eagles up 1-0, BGSU pressured and got the equalizer. Morgan Abbitt's shot on goal was blocked in the 65th minute, but Leah Runkle was there for the put-back for her first goal of the season.
BGSU had a chance to win the game in regulation but Skylar Fleak's shot sailed wide in the 86th minute, which ended up being the Falcons' last shot of regulation play.
In the golden goal overtime period, the Eagles opened the first five minutes with two corners and three shots, but Runkle answered with a shot of her own in the 97th minute, though it missed wide. The game ended on a goal by Morehead State's Dani Wilson in the 99th minute of the match.
"Lauren came up with huge back-to-back saves to keep us in the game, but as both teams were pushing for the win we got caught in transition for the overtime goal," said Basalyga.
"We are definitely taking away some experience and some learning," said Cheripko. "We know what it feels like to lose and we don't like it. We are going to do everything we can to learn from this, get better and come back stronger than ever."
The Eagles outshot the Falcons 6-1 in the overtime period.
"This is a great learning moment for our team as we gain experience on how to manage a game through the highs and lows," said Basalyga of her young team. The Falcons had seven freshmen and sophomores on the field to start the game and 12 saw action throughout.
Bowling Green travels to Detroit, Mich. to face Detroit for a 3 p.m. contest Wednesday. The Falcons then return to Cochrane Field Sept. 8 for a matchup with Findlay at 7 p.m.
Nebraska 4, Central Michigan 3
Box Score
LINCOLN, Neb. – Say this about the Central Michigan women’s soccer team: Don’t count ‘em out.
Jaycie Johnson’s goal with under 4 minutes remaining in the second overtime period lifted Nebraska past the Chippewas, 4-3, Friday in a non-conference match at the Cornhuskers’ Barbara Hibner Soccer Stadium.
Johnson’s goal ended what unfolded as a storybook comeback by the Chippewas (0-1-1), who trailed 3-0 before scoring three times in the final 14-plus minutes of regulation to tie it and send it to overtime.
“Sometimes you can look at result and you can sort of focus on the end and say this defines it,” CMU coach Peter McGahey said. “That couldn’t be further from the truth tonight.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this group and how they responded and how they continue to respond. It tells you a lot about this team and a lot about the direction that we’re headed.”
Kaelyn Korte scored on a penalty kick with 14 minutes, 8 seconds remaining to put the Chippewas on the board, then Samantha Maher scored on an unassisted shot from 15 yards out just 46 seconds later to pull CMU within one, 3-2.
Korte “stepped up and took the spot kick really well, put it home convincingly,” McGahey said. “Sam’s goal was a great goal. She got on the ball midfield and tucked it away in the upper 90 with a very convincing finish that showed everybody on the field and in the stands that we had a lot of life left.
“I think that how she did it really energized the group. At that point, the belief in the team was real.”
Lauren Sherry got the dramatic equalizer with just 17 seconds remaining. It was the first career goal for Sherry, a sophomore defender who was pressing up as the Chippewas scrambled in an attempt to tie the game as the clock ticked away.
“Lauren caught the goalkeeper off her line and it was a well-earned goal,” McGahey said. “On the road, in front of 1,200 fans. You see those types of competitive efforts from teams that are building in the right way. One of the players said ‘It’s coming. I sure wish it had happened tonight, but it’s happening.’”
Johnson scored unassisted with 3:49 left to lift the Cornhuskers (2-0-0).
Central Michigan freshman goalkeeper Zoie Reed made seven saves in her first career appearance. Nebraska outshot the Chippewas, 18-10, and had four corner kicks to CMU’s two.
“You could not have had a college debut that’s less indicative of the impact that (Reed) has on the game and on our team,” McGahey said. “She was good tonight. They earned four goals and I think Zoie put on a performance that we as a team are very proud of.”
The Chippewas continue their road trip in the state of Nebraska on Sunday when they play at Creighton (2-1) at 2 p.m.
DePaul 7, Eastern Michigan 0

CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Opening play at the Loyola Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team faced off against No. 19 DePaul University. Falling behind early, the Eagles' missed opportunities spurned the Green and White as they fell, 7-0, at Loyola Soccer Park. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 0-3-0 on the season.
The Blue Demons (2-0-1, 0-0) opened scoring with a goal in the 16th minute before the Eagles countered four minutes later. Working the ball down the sideline, senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) delivered a cross into the box for junior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio -Turpin). Oddan's cross connected with Tillar but the header soared over the crossbar.
Trailing by one, the Eagles faced consistent pressure from DePaul's attack. Standing strong as the Blue Demons sent crosses in front of goal, EMU was whistled for a foul inside the box moments later leading to a penalty kick for the Blue Demons and a 2-0 deficit for the Eagles.
As time dwindled in the opening half, the Eagles pressed looking to cut the Blue Demons' lead in half. In the 39th minute, redshirt-freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) earned a free kick three yards outside the box. Despite a well placed cross from junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), a foul on the Eagles ended the opportunity.
Following a few substitutions by Head Coach Scott Hall, fresh-legged junior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) created a scoring chance for the Green and White. Going toe-to-toe with her defender, Rollins sent a cross into the box for junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) but the play was disrupted by DePaul's keeper.
After a quick goal by DePaul opened play in the second Nason took a dive to the turf, giving the Eagles a free kick just outside the box in the 49th minute. Senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) stepped to the ball, clearing the four-person wall in front of her but sending the shot over frame.
Trapp's free kick served as the last scoring opportunity for the Eagles, as DePaul added four goals in the final 30 minutes.
EMU wraps up play at the Loyola Invitational, Sunday, Aug. 30, when they take the pitch against tournament host, Loyola-Chicago. The match is set to start at 1:30 p.m. at the Loyola Soccer Complex.
Kent State 2, Louisville 2
Box Score
KENT, Ohio- Kent State and Louisville played to a 2-2 draw in women's soccer on Friday night at Zoeller Field. Neither team could come up with the game-winner in the hard fought double-overtime contest. With the tie Kent State improved to 1-1-1 and remained unbeaten at home, while Louisville improved to 1-1-1 for the season.
The Golden Flashes battled back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 but could not come up with the game winner. Following a 34th minute Louisville goal from Casey Whitfield, sophomore Kristen Brots answered quickly with an equalizer in the 37th minute. Brots picked up a loose ball in the middle of the 18-yard box and drove a shot past Louisville goalkeeper Paige Brown for her second goal of the season.
The two teams went into the intermission tied 1-1 following what was a closely contested first half. Kent State had the only corner kick of the fist half but the Cardinals enjoyed a 6-4 advantage in shots. In the second-half Louisville came out of the gates quickly and went ahead 2-1 at the 48:02 mark with a goal by Victoria Martinis.
Kent State junior Jenna Hellstrom came up with a crucial goal in the 65th minute to even the score at 2-2. Sophomore Veronica Bosco flicked a pass by a Louisville defender for Hellstrom, who put the ball in the back of the net. The goal was the third of the season for Hellstrom, who is the current leading scorer for the Golden Flashes.
Kent State put in a good defensive effort throughout the game as the Cardinals battered Golden Flashes goalie Katie Kingsbury with 22 shots. Kingsbury finished with seven saves on the night.
Neither team had a great scoring chance the rest of the way in regulation and quality chances were sparse in the two overtime periods. Louisville earned a corner kick a minute into the first overtime and had a shot off of a rebound from the corner kick go wide.
Kent State's best chance for a winner came in the second overtime when Doni Capehart had a header go over the crossbar halfway through the final overtime. The Golden Flashes had to survive one final scare in the closing seconds as Louisville was granted a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box at the enplane on the left side of goal. Louisville brought everyone forward as the free kick was granted with 25 seconds remaining.
The Kent State defense was able to clear the kick out of the box and time expired.
The Golden Flashes next play on Friday, September 4th at 4 p.m. when they travel to play Vermont.
Valparaiso 2, Miami 0
Box Score
OXFORD, Ohio - Chances were aplenty for the Miami soccer team in its home opener on Friday, but the Red and White were unable to find the finishing touch in a 2-0 setback to Valparaiso.
The RedHawks suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1.
Miami held possession for the majority of the first half and created a couple scoring opportunities out of it, but to no avail. In the 27th minute, the officials blew the whistle for some physical play in the box and flagged Jess Bronke for a yellow card. Rita Craven took the ensuing penalty kick and hit the upper 90 to put the Crusaders (1-2) on top 1-0.
The RedHawks asserted themselves further with more pressure in the attacking third, getting good looks from Amy Malone and Kat Zalar in the later stages of the frame. Those shots were ultimately blocked and high, respectively, as Valpo maintained its advantage. The Crusaders went into the break still holding the 1-0 lead despite the RedHawks owning a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
In the second half, MU continued to possess the ball in the early stages, but one broken play set April Cronin loose down the left side. After she turned a defender, she fired a shot to the short side that found the back of the net to give Valparaiso a 2-0 cushion.
From that point on, Miami tried to push numbers forward and ultimately outshot Valparaiso 9-2 in the second half. However, most of the possession was stymied by a committed Crusader defense that made it difficult to make runs up the field.
With time winding down, the RedHawks made a nice run down the left sideline when Lauren Kelly played Zalar in behind the back line. Zalar crossed the ball in front to Bronke, who got a head on the feed, but it redirected wide with under 10 minutes left. While the RedHawks started getting sustained pressure in the closing minutes, they were unable to find the back of the net as they dropped their first contest of the season.
Miami outshot Valparaiso 15-5 overall on the afternoon, but got only two shots on target to Sydney Galvez-Daley, who stopped both attempts. Maniaci dropped her first decision of the year after stopping two of the four shots the Crusaders put on target.
The RedHawks are back on the road with a match at Evansville on Sunday. First kick is at 2 p.m.
Creighton 4, Northern Illinois 1
Box Score
OMAHA, Neb. – Junior midfielder Mackenzie Lewis (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) scored her first career goal, but the Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Creighton on Friday evening at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
The Huskies (1-2) were unlucky to lose by three goals against their opponents from the Big East after registering 13 shot attempts, hitting the target eight times and seeing shots crash the crossbar twice.
After a very even and entertaining first half between the two teams, the Bluejays (2-1) did all their scoring in a 25-minute stretch during the second half. From the 58th to the 82nd minute, Creighton displayed brutally clinical finishing to build a 4-0 lead over the Huskies in what previously appeared would be an even match.
NIU head coach John Ross acknowledged that Creighton's goals were of high quality but knows the Huskies need to learn from the defeat.
"It was a tough second half. They certainly took their chances well," Ross said. "But we'll learn from this performance, and we're looking forward to our next match already."
It could’ve been a completely different game if the crossbar hadn’t robbed NIU for the third time already this season. Seconds after Alyssa Jara scored the opening goal with a powerful volley into the top left corner, NIU counter attacked through the pace of Taylor Sarver (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) before Nicole Gobbo (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) smashed a shot off the crossbar.
Instead of having a tied game, within a few minutes, Creighton doubled their lead through an acrobatic and unstoppable volley into the corner of the net by Emma Braasch. Kaira Houser and Lauren Sullivan then added impressive goals for the Bluejays before Lewis found the net for the first time in her NIU career in the 87th minute, tapping in a rebound after Marisa Knott (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) had hit the crossbar.
In an end-to-end contest with both teams shooting freely, NIU sophomore goalkeeper Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) was forced to make a season-high nine saves.
Also highlighting the positives on the night for NIU were the returns of Lauren Gierman (Prospect Heights, Ill./John Hersey) and Emily Nulty (Omaha, Neb./Marian) from injury. Omaha native Nulty received a loud ovation from her group of supporters when she entered the match in each half, while Gierman impressed with her midfield play for the Huskies in her first start of the season.
The Huskies will stay in Omaha for the rest of the weekend ahead of their matchup on Sunday with the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Omaha’s Caniglia Field.
Detroit 2, Ohio 0
Box Score
DETROIT, Mich. – The Ohio soccer team took on Detroit on Friday (Aug. 28) afternoon, falling to the Titans, 2-0, at Titan Field.
“Credit to Detroit. They came out and were very strong and played a very physical game,” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “They had a little extra bite to them in the first half and they capitalized on the penalty and then they scored a good second goal. It was something that we had to adjust too and we had to raise our game at half time. We challenged them to just come out with more intensity and more will to do the little battles here and there and we were much better in the second half. I would have liked to have scored a goal, but we created a couple of good chances and came very close a couple of times, but it wasn’t quite there.”
Detroit struck first, scoring in the 12th minute when Alyssa Lotito scored on a penalty kick, giving the Titans an early 1-0 lead.
In the 37th minute, Ohio had their best opportunity of the first half, when Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.) fired the ball at the Detroit net, but was blocked by Marina Manzo, the Titans keeper.
Detroit added to their lead in the 39th minute, when Lotito scored her second goal of the contest, when her shot curved into the top corner of the goal from 25 yards out, giving the Titans a 2-0 entering the half.
In the second half, the Bobcats came out firing, with Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Allie Curry (Fairfield, Ohio) recording shots early in the half. However, the Bobcats would be unable to score and would fall by the final of 2-0.
Overall, the Bobcats recorded eight shots with three of them on goal. Offensively, Ohio was led by Jaggers, who recorded three shots, two of them on goal. Curry added a shot and one shot on goal for the Bobcats, while Manso, Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio), Megan Niebuhr (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Stephanie Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky.) all had a shot a piece for Ohio.
“Hannah [Jaggers] was one of our bright spots on the day,” Rodgers said. “She worked really hard this summer and came in really fit and really strong. She tested in as one of our fastest players in preseason. She’s had a great attitude. She’s more confident this season than she was last season and I hope she’s going to continue to grow and get better and better as the season progresses.”
In goal, Vanessa Cordoba (Bogota, Cundinamarca, Colombia) got her second start for the Bobcats, allowing two goals on 10 shots and registering four saves in her 90 minutes of action.
“It was a great opportunity to play against a team that plays very similar to the teams in our conference,” Rodgers said. “Now we’re becoming more and more prepared for our conference. It also prepares us for Sunday because I think Cleveland State is going to come and be very similar to Detroit. I think we are now a little more prepared. We were much improved in the second half, so it’s one half closer to us putting together a full 90 minutes.”
Up next, the Bobcats return to Chessa Field on Sunday, Aug. 30 to take on Cleveland State in their 2015 home opener. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
Xavier 2, Toledo 0
Box Score
CINCINNATI, OH – Toledo fell at Xavier, 2-0, on Friday at the XU Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Rockets slip to 1-2-0 on the year.
UT found itself down early once again, as the Musketeers' (2-1-0) Catherine Allon found the back of the net off assists from Andie Kennard and Samantha Dewey in the eighth minute. Allon's first goal of the season proved to be the match winner for the home team.
After today's initial marker, the contest opened up with both teams trading good shots at the frame. UT's best chance to score came on a rip from outside the box by UT sophomore Regan Price that unfortunately bounced off the crossbar, while Xavier's Skylar Groth cashed in on its opportunity at the 30:21 mark. Addie Englehart and Kenadie Carlson were credited with helpers on Groth's first tally of the year.
Just like the first two contests of the season, Toledo's backline stepped up in the final 45 minutes and allowed Big East member Xavier to record only one shot on the frame.
"The match was a tale of two halves," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "We had some bad moments in the first half that put us down. Xavier played a better match than us."
The Midnight Blue & Gold finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, but the visitors were unable to strike gold in today's non-league matchup.
"We didn't do what we needed to do offensively today," said Buchholz. "We had a great second half, but it was just too late in the match as we were down. We're going to learn from our mistakes and bounce back against Kentucky."
Senior netminder Sam Tiongson had another solid match between the posts, making five saves on the afternoon.
The Rockets will now head to Lexington, KY next to take on SEC power Kentucky on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 6:00 p.m. The Wildcats are 2-1-0 on the year, defeating UNC-Greensboro 3-0 on Friday. The match can be seen on the SEC Network+ and Watch ESPN.
Western Michigan 3, IPFW 0
Box Score
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 3-0 victory at IPFW on Friday evening.
After a scoreless first half the Broncos quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Emma Kahn. Tiffany Buckler later added the third goal of the game to seal the win. Stephanie Heber needed to make just one save to earn her first shutout of the season as WMU limited the Mastodons to just three total shots.
"IPFW competed very hard and made things very difficult on us in the first half," said head coach Nate Norman. "I really like the way they responded in the second half to take control of the game. We had better energy and the passes connected better."
Kahn got her first tally of the season in the 51st minute. The sophomore forward received a pass from Lacey Zah and finished in the near corner of the net.
Kahn stuck again in the 59th minute after a blast from the top of the box into the upper-right side of the goal to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
Buckler finished off the scoring in the 78th minute after winning a loose ball and lobbing it over the keeper for her first collegiate goal.
Western Michigan continues on the road at Illinois-Chicago on Sunday at 3 p.m.
