Box Score

NASHVILLE -- The Ball State soccer team created plenty of chances Sunday but just could not find the net in a 2-0 loss at Lipscomb.

The Cardinals (1-1), coming off a four-goal outburst in Friday’s season opener at Jacksonville State, registered 21 shots. They had several one-on-one opportunities against Lipscomb keeper Anna Buhigas but did not manage to score.

“I thought we played well, especially in the second half,” Ball State head coach Craig Roberts said. “We had lots of waves of attack; we just have to be better at converting.”

Lipscomb (1-0-1), last year’s runner-up in the Atlantic Sun Conference, finished off an unbeaten opening weekend without allowing a goal. The Lady Bisons played Tennessee to a scoreless draw two nights ago.

Lipscomb grabbed an early lead in the 15th minute on a header from Elizabeth Ashwood that proved to be the only goal of the first half. The Lady Bisons then struck again early in the second half when Maycie McKay put in her own miss off the post for a two-goal advantage.

“Lipscomb is a good team that plays very direct and is effective with it,” Roberts said. “It was a good learning experience for us, and it will be beneficial for us when we play against teams like that in the future.”

A pair of freshmen led the attack for Ball State with Abigail Boswell recording five shots and Emily Scott adding four. The Cardinals placed nine shots on goal, but Buhigas saved all of them. Ball State keeper Alyssa Heintschel made seven saves of her own.

“It was a challenge for us to go a goal down early,” Roberts said. “I thought we responded well. It was just one of those days. I felt like we actually had chances to win the game if we would have been able to convert.”

Ball State will now return to Muncie for its home opener. The Cardinals will host Wright State at 5 p.m. Friday at the Briner Sports Complex.

Bowling Green 3, IPFW 0
Box Score

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team moved to 2-0-0 on the season following a 3-0 shutout of IPFW Sunday afternoon at Cochrane Stadium. With two victories, the Falcons have now tied its win total from a year ago at home.

BGSU is 2-0-0 for the first time since 2000 and it is the first time in school history the Falcons have shut out its first two opponents. BG defeated Chicago State Friday night, 4-0.

The Falcons are now 4-0 all-time versus the Mastodons in women's soccer action and have not allowed an IPFW goal in the series, which dates back to 2008.

The critical stretch of the game came when IPFW's Erin Gill and Kallianne Mogler blasted consecutive shots off the post in a scoreless match at the 60-minute mark. With new life, Bowling Green broke into the scoring column just six minutes later as Haley Parkinson's long shot bounced over IPFW goalkeeper Kiley Dunning and rolled into the goal.

One minute later, Erica Hubert had a long run down the middle of the field and capitalized on her shot from the top of the box to put the Falcons up 2-0. The score was Hubert's second of the season.

The final goal of the match came from Mikaela Couch in the 84th minute. Alexa Cheripko's pass found Couch in the box and the sophomore scored on an open goal as the keeper had taken herself out of the play.

"We adjusted some things tactically in the attack that I think led to some pretty good opportunities," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga on adjustments made from the first to second half.

The game opened with an evenly played half in which neither team was able to crack the scoring column. The Falcons and Mastodons each got eight shots off in the 45-minute period. BGSU had its best chance of the first half in the 42nd minute, but a shot by Laura Bozzelli hit the right post.

"We kept grinding away at the game. Win, lose or draw, the fans will hopefully see us compete through the 90 minutes," said Basalyga.

Lauren Cadel earned the shutout and recorded two saves in the win. She moves to 2-0-0 on the season.

Through two games, the Falcons have recorded seven goals, which is nearly half of the total number of goals scored by the team in all of 2014 (15). The seven goals scored at home in 2015 is already more than the five goals the team scored at home a year ago.

BGSU looks to improve to 3-0-0 Friday night when the team travels to Morehead, Kentucky to face Morehead State at 6 pm.

Buffalo 1, Drexel 0
Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MAC) got back to their winning ways on Sunday afternoon as they blanked the Drexel Dragons on the road, 1-0. Sophomore Laura Dougall bounced back nicely in goal, making six saves in her first clean sheet of the season.

"Great bounce back game for the girls today," said second-year head coach Shawn Burke. "Drexel was a handful and i thought defensively we sorted out our issues from Friday. We still are far away from where we need to be, especially offensively, but winning is hard and the girls deserved this one."

After an early chance by Drexel was turned away by Dougall, Carissima Cutrona had a golden opportunity to give the Bulls the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute but her shot attempts from in close were both turned away by the Dragons keeper.

A couple minutes later the Dragons were whistled for a yellow card which gave Kassidy Kidd a free kick from just outside the box. Her attempt was pushed away by diving goalkeeper which kept the game scoreless in the 22nd minute.

Finally, in the 42 minute of action Angel Hart was able to give the Bulls their first lead of the young season as her rocket of a shot found some room just inside the left goal post from 30 yards out for the goal. The goal was Hart's third career marker.

The second half began with both sides trading opportunities as Civanni Moss of Drexel saw her shot clank off the post and Cutrona just missed wide on her shot attempt in the 48th minute.

The two sides went back-and-forth but the stout UB defense held strong, not allowing the Dragons any great chances to score the game-tying marker. Kristin Markiewicz, Jackie Hall, Andrea Niper, Hart and Brianna Shingary helped preserve Dougall's first clean sheet of the season and 14th of her career.

Dougall finished off her impressive contest with a season-high six saves in her 17th career victory as a Bull. Cutrona led all Bulls with three shots including two on goal while Kidd and Alex Lambert each had two shots on goal in the win. Celina Carrero and Nicole Gerritz each had a shot on goal in the 1-0 win.

Drexel held the slim 13-12 advantage in shots and a 8-5 edge in corner kicks in the defeat. Eve Badana finished the game with seven saves in the loss for the Dragons.

Following the match, Markiewicz was awarded the "Player of the Match" award by the UB coaching staff after a great game defensively in the midfield for the Bulls.

The Bulls will return to the pitch next Sunday as they will travel to take on crosstown rival Canisius College. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 pm.

Central Michigan 2, Oakland 2 (2 OT)
Box Score

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Alexis Pelafas and Samantha Maher scored the Central Michigan goals Sunday as the CMU women’s soccer team played Oakland to a 2-2 double-overtime draw in the Chippewas’ season-opening match at Oakland Soccer Field.

“It’s a good first step for the team,” third-year CMU coach Peter McGahey said. “I thought the team responded very well to adversity throughout the game.”

The Chippewas play at Nebraska and at Creighton in non-conference matches next weekend.

Oakland (0-1-1), which was picked to finish second in the Horizon League preseason poll, outshot the Chippewas 21-13. But CMU held a 3-0 edge in the overtime periods.

The Grizzlies finished with six corner kicks to CMU’s five. In the extra sessions, the Chippewas had two corners while Oakland had none.

Senior Maddy Bunnell made 11 saves in goal for CMU, one shy of her career high which she set last season at Illinois State. Oakland keeper Alison Howard made five saves.

Alice Palmer gave OU a 1-0 lead at the 11-minute, 48-second mark when she scored off a corner kick.

The Chippewas responded seven minutes later when a pair of freshmen, Pelafas and Madison Pogarch, combined for their first collegiate points to tie it at a goal apiece.

“Pogarch broke in, persisted through a couple of tackles, and served the ball off the left flank and Alexis headed it home,” McGahey said. “The goal was well earned and very well taken.”

Less than three minutes later, junior Samantha Maher scored off a Christen Chiesa corner kick to put the Chippewas up, 2-1.

“Sam’s goal off a corner kick was a really good composed finish to slot the ball,” McGahey said. “Good bit of skill and a good bit of confidence. I thought she was a player who, over the course of the game, did a really job. She’s playing a new position and in a new role for us.”

Brianne Horne scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to knot it 2-2.

The game was delayed for about 45 minutes because of a tornado warning between the end of regulation time and the start of overtime.

“It’s incredibly difficult to re-warm up the legs, but I thought we did an incredible job of getting after it,” McGahey said. “After you give away the PK (goal), momentum’s clearly with Oakland and we held on to take the point.

“The silver lining today was we got some good performances, got some grass stains on our socks and responded well to the difficulties as they came. I felt like we responded well to both the OT and the weather delay.

“Good performances from a lot of newcomers today. You could really see some of the high ceilings that exist and that’s really exciting.”

Kent State 6, Bryant 0
Box Score

KENT, Ohio-Kent State cruised to a 6-0 victory over Bryant University in the Golden Flashes home opener Sunday afternoon.  Junior Jenna Hellstrom led the way for the Golden Flashes with two goals and two assists,  with her first goal coming less than a minute into the contest.

With the victory, Kent State improved to 1-1 on the season and Bryant dropped to 0-2. The Golden Flashes rebounded in resounding fashion from a 1-0 season opening loss at Maryland on Friday night.

Kent State also got goals from Brittany Maisano, Kristen Brots, Karli Paracca and Doni Capehart in a dominating effort. After the quick goal by Hellstrom, Maisano struck in the  35th minute from the left side of goal. Maisano, who was on the left side of the eight-yard box, received a pass from Paracca and slipped it past Bryant goalkeeper Kaylan Conrad.  It was her first collegiate goal.

The floodgates opened in the second half as the Golden Flashes scored four second-half goals. Kent State dominated the entire game and enjoyed a 22-9 shot advantage and outworked the Bulldogs for a 9-5 lead in corner kicks. The Golden Flashes backline was stout in defense as Ashleah McDonald and Katie Kingsbury combined for the shutout in goal.

Kent State got two goals in under a minute when Brots scored at the 53:07 mark.  Sophomore Hayden Pascoe and Hellstrom were credited with the assist.  Then just a minute later, Hellstrom notched her second goal of the game.  The goal started on a quick counter-attack out of the backfield by Maisano on the left side.  Pascoe and Abbie Lawson assisted on the goal.

The Golden Flashes tacked on two more goals in the final minutes to finish the rout. In the 82nd minute Paracca banged home a carom off the left post past a diving Bulldogs goalkeeper. Morgan Williams had a shot hit the left post and a charging Paracca was there to put in the rebound.

Capehart's goal came with 36 seconds remaining in the game and was a strike from 13-yards out in front of goal.

The Golden Flashes are back in action on Friday, August 28th at 4:30 p.m when they host Louisville.

Miami 4, Western Kentucky 0
Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - After weathering an early storm to win on opening night, the Miami soccer team took charge early and struck often in a 4-0 win at Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.

Four different Miami (2-0) players found the back of the net and the big spread allowed MU to delve deep into its bench.

"I'm very pleased with both our effort and the results today," head coach Bobby Kramig said. "It was great to score some goals, get the shutout and play a lot of players."

The RedHawks got a good look out of an early corner kick as Katie Mazurek got a head on Jess Bronke's cross and directed it on goal, but Allison Leone was there to make the save. The play was pretty even throughout the early stages of the contest, with both teams attempting two shots over the first 15 minutes of play.

WKU (1-1) put consecutive shots on goal in the 17th and 18th minutes, but Vic Maniaci got to both attempts. MU followed with a run the other way and created a corner kick in the 19th minute. On the second corner attempt of the match, Bronke again found the head of Mazurek and this one found the back of the net for the senior defender's first collegiate goal.

The Hilltoppers turned up the heat late in the half, firing five-straight shots over a six-minute span. Maniaci remained sharp and finished with six first-half saves to keep WKU off the board. Rachel Marble added some breathing room to the Red and White lead in the 44th minute when she corralled a feed from Ashley Weathers and beat Allison Leone for her first goal of the season to give them a 2-0 lead at the break.

Stephanie Dillon kept the scoring going in the 49th minute when she forced a turnover and beat Leone for her first tally of the season, putting Miami on top 3-0. The big cushion allowed the Red and White to go deep into their bench as 22 players stepped onto the field in the win. Kat Zalar added a fourth RedHawk tally in the 87th minute to cap the scoring.

"This weekend will provide us an opportunity to continue to grow and develop as a team," Kramig said. "Getting two wins is great, but more importantly we gained experience that will help us continue to improve."

Both teams attempted 17 shots with Miami placing 10 on goal and Western Kentucky directing nine on target. Both teams also had six corner kick tries. Maniaci made six stops in a scoreless first half before ceding the net to freshman Patricia Koutoulas, who stopped all three shots she faced in the second half to secure the shutout. Allison Leone allowed four goals on 10 shots at the other end.

Miami is 2-0 for the fifth time in the last six seasons and hosts Valparaiso in its home opener on Friday. Opening kick is at 4 p.m.

North Dakota 2, Northern Illinois 1
Box Score

DeKALB, Ill. – Despite scoring first and creating the majority of the scoring chances, the Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team dropped a tough match to North Dakota on Sunday afternoon at the NIU Soccer Complex by a 2-1 scoreline.

Nicole Gobbo (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) scored her second goal in as many games and the 13th of her career to give the Huskies the lead in the 68th minute, but North Dakota came back to score two late goals and win the match.

NIU head coach John Ross thought his team played well in stretches on Sunday, and he took some positives from the game.

“That’s the game of soccer. When you don’t take advantage of your chances, sometimes it comes back to beat you,” Ross said. “I thought we played well at times, but we didn’t capitalize on those spells. We’ll get better.”

The Huskies were on the front foot from the first whistle, controlling possession and threatening North Dakota’s goal throughout much of the first half that ended scoreless. But North Dakota also had a few chances on the counter attack, and NIU sophomore goalkeeper Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) was forced to make one special save to keep the match scoreless.

As the second half wore on and the match appeared to be stymied in a deadlock, it was the persistent Gobbo who gave the Huskies the lead, running on to a great pass from Haley Cummings (Spring, Texas/Home School) and sliding the ball under the on-rushing goalkeeper.

But within minutes, North Dakota were level as Zoe Foster headed in.

NIU responded very well to conceding the equalizer, creating several great chances. Delaney Loprieno (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) had perhaps the best, firing a shot off the crossbar. However, from the rebound of that shot, North Dakota counter attacked through Riley Koberinski, who found a pass to Katie Moller to finish into the corner of the net in the 87th minute for the decisive goal.

NIU outshot North Dakota 14-11 and had six corner kicks compared to one for the visitors, but the Huskies dropped to 1-1 on the season after the defeat. NIU won its season opener on Friday night against Lewis 2-1 thanks to goals from Gobbo and Cassidy Page (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran).

The Huskies will head to the state of Nebraska next weekend for a pair of matches at Creighton and Omaha on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Notre Dame 3, Toledo 0
Box Score

SOUTH BEND, IN – Toledo suffered a 3-0 setback at No. 9 Notre Dame on Sunday at Alumni Field. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 1-1-0 on the young season.

The nationally ranked Fighting Irish (2-0-0) were aggressive early, notching two goals in the first 17 minutes of the match. The duo of Kaleigh Olmsted and Sandra Yu each found the back of the net to give the home team a lead they would not relinquish. UND outshot UT 24-1 during the non-conference contest.

First-year head coach TJ Buchholz knows how quality of an opponent the Fighting Irish was. "Notre Dame was a fantastic opponent. There is a reason why they're ranked No. 9 in the country. It was a special opportunity for us to play a team like Notre Dame. There were moments where we played well and worked hard, especially on defense. Overall, this was a test you want to learn from."

The match was physical from beginning to end, as both teams were booked for 14 fouls each. UT sophomore Sydney Vinton was shown a yellow card in the 37th minute.

The second half played different than the first, as the Rockets' form improved. Toledo applied pressure early in the period and created more chances, but the Midnight Blue & Gold was unable to score. On the defensive third of the pitch, senior netminder Sam Tiongson kept the deficit at 2-0 with an incredible diving save in the 62nd minute to deny Notre Dame from close range. The fourth-year Rocket finished the contest with seven saves.

The Rockets surrendered one additional marker late in the second half on a header from Taylor Klawunder off of a corner kick to make the final score 3-0. Despite giving up the late goal, Buchholz knows how well the defense played during today's match.

"Our entire backline stepped up today," Buchholz said. "They made it tough for Notre Dame to get behind us. Sam also played a phenomenal game in goal. The Fighting Irish isn't an easy team to keep off of the scoreboard."

The Rockets kept pressing late in the match and earned a corner kick in the 86th minute. Moments later, senior Megan Connor fired UT's lone shot on frame, but the blas was unable to find the back of the net.

Toledo will remain on the road next weekend when it travels to takes on Xavier on Friday, Aug. 28 at 5:00 p.m. and No. 16 Kentucky on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 6:00 p.m. Sunday's match against the Wildcats will be shown live on the SEC Network+ and on ESPN3.
