AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore Raechel Eck (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and senior Katie George (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) each scored their first two collegiate goals to lead the charge for the Akron Zips in a 4-0 women's soccer victory over the Bryant Bulldogs Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Ten minutes into the game freshman Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio) crossed a pass into the box that deflected off a defender and was rounded up by Eck. Eck composed herself, got off a shot that was deflected by a diving goalie Kaylan Conrad. The ball was loose inside the box and Eck found herself wide open connecting for the first goal of her career.
In the final 35 minutes of the first half, the Zips got off five more shots with one on goal that was saved by Conrad.
Baughman got behind the defense in the 67' (66:20) and was 1v1 with the goalie from the top of the box. Baughman dribbled the ball in and as the keeper came out to make a play, Baughman chipped the ball over the goalies' head, unfortunately, the ball was just high and rattled off the crossbar before being cleared.
One minute later (67:55), George intercepted a pass from the defense just inside the box. She sent a shot past the keeper in the lower left side of the net to tally her first career goal.
Another three minutes had past and in the 72' minute George found herself celebrating her second goal of the night at the 71:34 mark. Junior Karin Norman (Stocksund, Sweden) sent a shot from inside the box that was saved by the keeper, George was able to regain possession off of the deflection and find the back of the net.
Baughman and Eck connected on another play to continue Akron's success and put the game out of reach at 4-0 with 19 minutes to play in the 75th minute (74:13). Baughman fed the ball through the corner of the box to Eck who struck the ball from 12 yards away for her second goal of the night.
Baughman started in her first collegiate game and recorded her first two college assists.
Eck posted three shots on the night followed by George and senior Hannah Werth (Bloomington, Minn.) with two.
Goalies Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) and Klaire Adee (Rockford, Ill.) combined to shut out the Bulldogs. Hegeman started the game in the net and Adee subbed in at the 81:10 mark.
In total the Zips out shot the Bulldogs on the night 14 to five, including seven to one on goal.
The 4-0 win was the first win for Noreen Herlihy as the head coach of the Akron Zips program.
Akron is now 11-2-2 in home opening matches since the program began in 2001.
The Zips return to action traveling to battle Niagara on Friday, Aug. 28.

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Freshman Kelcy Fiser scored the first goal of the season and the Ball State soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory Friday night in its season opener at Jacksonville State.
The Cardinals (1-0) controlled play and dominated possession throughout the evening. They broke the game open with three goals in the second half against a Jacksonville State team that reached the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament finals a year ago.
“We played very well offensively,” head coach Craig Roberts said. “We are always trying to continue our progression, and I was pleased with how consistent we were tonight in each area of the field. It was good to see our goals come from four different players and to see one of our freshmen score right off the bat.”
Jacksonville State (0-1) was rarely able to move the ball into the attacking third. The Gamecocks applied little pressure, forcing Ball State sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel to make just one save on the way to her fifth career solo shutout.
The Cardinals, on the other hand, were on the attack from the outset. They out-shot Jacksonville State by an 18-3 margin and held an astounding 15-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
After a couple early chances went begging, Ball State broke through on Fiser’s goal in the 35th minute off a look from Jenna Finke. Gabby Veldman continued the scoring early in the second half when she took advantage of a misplay by the Jacksonville State goalkeeper and scored from close range.
Then the floodgates opened when Lorina White and Kelsey Wendlandt scored within three minutes of each other. White, the 2014 national junior college player of the year, headed home a beautiful cross from Lauren Hall, while Wendlandt got free on a breakaway and converted to put the game out of reach.
“I thought our consistency and depth paid off for us tonight, allowing us to control the game,” Roberts said. “I thought our experience came into play, and I was also really pleased with the performances of our newcomers.”
Ball State looked for the entire evening like a team worthy of its selection as a preseason co-favorite in the Mid-American Conference West Division.
The team will now head to Nashville to close out its season-opening weekend Sunday at Lipscomb. That contest is slated for a Noon CT (1 p.m. ET) start. Lipscomb opened its season Friday night by playing Tennessee to a scoreless draw.

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team opened up its season with a win against Chicago State Friday evening at Cochrane Stadium in front of a record-setting crowd of 803. The Falcons defeated the Cougars 4-0 for the team's first victory in a season opener since 2004.
"We really started off strong tonight," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "I'm really pleased with the performance we put on the field. You can see ideas starting to click. I think for the first night out, we are in a good place."
BGSU jumped out early in the contest, scoring on a goal by junior Alexa Cheripko in the sixth minute. Sophomore Skylar Fleak played the ball into the box where her pass found freshman Juli Knapp, who then connected with Cheripko for the score. The Falcons scored again in the 12th minute on a goal by redshirt freshman Erica Hubert.
Already up 2-0, Madison Schupbach kept the scoring going with a goal in the 28th minute. The sophomore dribbled across the middle of the field and capitalized on a left-footed shot from the top of the box.
Less than 30 seconds later, Hubert found Mikaela Couch running across the box through the defense for a one-on-one opportunity, resulting in Couch's first goal of the season.
For Cheripko, Hubert and Couch, it was their first career goals.
The Falcons took a 4-0 lead into halftime, dominating the shot column 17-3 and corner kicks 7-0.
Despite not notching a goal in the second half, BGSU controlled possession for most of the half, outshooting Chicago State 13-5.
The Cougars tightened up on defense in the final 45 minutes, keeping the Falcons off the board despite multiple opportunities.
In the 61st minute, a Bowling Green goal was called offsides, keeping the score at 4-0. Freshman Abbie Bacon had a flurry with two shots on goal in a span of 11 seconds in the 88th minute to try to add onto the team's lead, but both were saved by Chicago State's goalkeeper, Audra Wisehart.
2014 Second-Team All-MAC selection, Lauren Cadel, recorded two saves in 51 minutes of action in her first victory of the season. Alexis Smith, the second keeper to see action on the evening for BGSU, notched three saves in 39 minutes.
The crowd of 803 broke the previous women's soccer record of 700 that was set in 2002.
"The fan support was great and getting the crowd involved added some momentum for us," Basalyga said. "We were playing with a little bit of a swagger that we haven't had in years past at this time of year. We only really started to scratch the surface as we head into Sunday's game."
BGSU will look to get to 2-0-0 for the first time since 2000 when the Falcons host IPFW Sunday at 1 pm. The Mastodons opened the season with a 3-1 loss to Northern Kentucky Friday.

Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's soccer team opened up their 2015 regular season with a 3-1 road loss at Saint Joseph's on Friday night.
"We were beaten by a better and more prepared St. Joseph's team tonight," stated second-year head coach Shawn Burke. "We showed glimpses of what we are capable of, but glimpses dont win games. I do believe we have growth minded players and will be able to learn and move forward after this performance."
The Hawks got on the board just 22 seconds into the match as Dakota Mills placed a shot into the upper right corner of the net for her first career goal. Saint Joseph's extended the lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute of play as Shannon Westhead found the back of the net after a perfect cross from Emily Gingrich.
The first half came to a close with the home team dominating play, holding the 10-3 edge in shots during the first 45 minutes of action.
As the second half started, the Bulls looked more comfortable and began creating more chances. After back-to-back yellow card to Kristin Markiewicz and Kassidy Kidd the Bulls got on the board with their first goal of the 2015 campaign.
Jackie Hall started the play with a great free kick attempt that was saved and forced out of bounds, giving the Bulls a corner kick. On the ensuing kick, Moira Petrie sent a perfect ball into the box where Hall was able to head home her first goal of the season. Petrie earned her first career point for the Bulls with the perfect assist.
Saint Joseph's responded quickly, making it 3-1 in favor of the home team just a minute later. Mills' second goal of the contest put the Bulls comeback attempt to rest as the Hawks were able to hold on down the stretch and hand UB the loss.
Saint Joseph's held the 16-8 advantage in shots while the Bulls held the 5-1 lead in corner kicks. Sophomore Laura Dougall made three saves in the loss while her counterpart Allison Ebling made three saves in the victory. Hall led all Bulls with three shots while Markiewicz was the only other UB player with a shot on goal in the loss.
Buffalo (0-1, 0-0 MAC) will return to the pitch on Sunday at 1:00 pm as they will travel to take on the Drexel Dragons.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a showdown with Washtenaw County rival, University of Michigan, at U-M Soccer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 21. The Wolverines struck early, before junior Madison Hirsch scored the Eagles lone goal, as EMU fell 8-1.
Michigan's press in the opening minutes forced the Eagles out of their element, making it difficult for them to connect in transition. After senior Megan McCabe made the initial save, senior defender Hallee Kansman made another from the goal line before Michigan sent a third shot over the reach of McCabe, talking a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the match before adding another one minute later.
In the final five minutes of the half, the Eagles' midfielders created several scoring opportunities. The first came in the 42nd minute as redshirt-freshman Kristin Nason created enough space to drop a pass for senior Chelsie Oddan at the top of the box. Firing a one-timer, Oddan's shot was deflected before being corralled by the Wolverines goalkeeper.
Moments later after the Eagles threatened again, the Wolverines' goalkeeper's clear attempt found the feet of Nason just outside the box. Controlling the ball, Nason took a step towards goal and blasted a shot back into the hands of the keeper, sending the Eagles into halftime trailing by two.
Creating opportunities early, the Eagles found themselves trapped on their defensive half of the field for an extended stretch in the second half. With the Eagles defense struggling to clear the ball, Michigan's high-powered offense extended their lead to 7-nil in the 69th minute.
Countering a scoring chance by the Wolverines, the Eagles transitioned the ball up field. As the Green and White carried the ball towards goal, junior Stef Barcelos fought for a pass at the top of the box, getting fouled in the process. The foul gave the Eagles a free-kick five yards outside the box. Hirsch stepped to the ball to take the kick with a five-man wall standing between her and the goal. Hirsch ripped the ball around the wall and tucked it just beneath the crossbar, cutting the Eagles' deficit to six.
Michigan responded with a goal in the 82nd minute, before sending the Eagles home with an 8-1 defeat. The loss marks the first season-opening loss to Michigan in program history.
EMU returns to the pitch, Monday, Aug. 24, in Indianapolis for a bout with the Butler Bulldogs. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. at the Butler Bowl.

Box Score
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rookie goalkeeper Ashlea McDonald tallied four saves in her collegiate debut against the University of Maryland, but a first-half goal on a penalty kick gave the Terrapins a 1-0 victory at Ludgwig Field tonight.
"We are very proud of our effort tonight," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "We did a lot of positive things tonight that we will build on and move forward. We played very well defensively and our offense will come. We walked away disappointed in the result tonight but not in our performance."
Kent State had opportunities early, as sophomore Doni Capehart fired off the first shot three minutes into the game that missed wide. Three minutes later, junior Jenna Hellstrom put the ball on target, but Maryland goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands turned the shot away.
Maryland 's first shot on goal was the game-winner, which came 15 minutes into the contest. Maryland's Alex Anthony put one past McDonald to give the Terrapins a 1-0 lead, which would eventually win the game. Anthony had a game-high nine shots, including three on goal, in her 79 minutes of play.
Kent State continued its attack, and tried to tally the equalizer two minutes before halftime. Sophomore Hayden Pascoe got the ball to Capehart who nailed a shot just up and over the bar.
Maryland had a 7-5 advantage in shots, including a 3-1 edge in shots on goal, and led 3-1 in corner kicks after the first 45 minutes.
The Terrapins picked up their intensity in the second half and outshot the Golden Flashes 9-0 for a 16-5 overall advantage for the game. Maryland also led 8-1 in corner kicks by the end of the night.
Hellstrom led the Kent State offense with three shots, including the lone shot on goal, while Pascoe and Capehart added one apiece.
McDonald earned the loss between the pipes for the Golden Flashes, while Beanlands tallied her first shutout victory of the season with one save.
Kent State will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 when it takes on Bryant University at Zoeller Field.
Miami 1, Vanderbilt 0
Box Score
NASHVILLE – Vic Maniaci withstood an early barrage of Vanderbilt shots before the Miami soccer team found its legs in the second half to win 1-0 on the road on opening night.
The junior goalkeeper stopped all 11 shots that came her way as the RedHawks (1-0) picked up their milestone 200th all-time victory in their first-ever meeting with the Commodores.
Maniaci was tested early with a shot 28 seconds in that she turned aside. A few minutes later, Maniaci stood tall against an even bigger challenge as Vanderbilt’s Simone Charley fired a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box that the RedHawk keeper reached out to deflect off the post, keeping it scoreless in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Commodores continued pressing the attack in the early portions of the match, getting four shots through to Maniaci in the first 15 minutes of play, but seeing nothing come from those chances. VU also had a number of set pieces during that flurry, including four corner kicks.
A fifth Vanderbilt corner kick in the 21st minute nearly put it on the board, but Claire Anderson’s shot was blocked near the line and cleared from the post by Lauren Kelly. Deft goaltending by Maniaci along with timely plays from the Red and White defense kept the contest scoreless midway through the opening frame and spoiled the Commodores’ 10-1 advantage in shots.
MU’s first shot on goal came off the foot of Korrie Sauder in the 37th minute, though it was turned away by VU keeper Christiana Ogunsami. The freshman attempted two of the RedHawks’ four shots in the opening half of play. After never making more than six saves in a match in her first two seasons on campus, Maniaci finished the opening frame with eight stops while both Kelly and Tori Christiansen made saves of their own to keep the contest scoreless despite Vanderbilt’s 16-4 edge in shots.
“We struggled in the first half, but we escaped,” head coach Bobby Kramig said. “We were fortunate to get out of the half scoreless. Vanderbilt has a lot of speed and athleticism, but Vic kept us in the game with some very poised play in the first half.”
Just out of the break, Miami took the ball on a solid run up the field as Sauder tried to feed Haley Walter on a cross near the goal, but the pair couldn’t quite connect. Play did stabilize for Miami in the second half with possession a bit more evenly distributed in the early stages of the final regulation period. Even so, the stalemate continued well into the second half.
The improved play finally paid off in the 80th minute when Courtney Evans slipped a ball through a seam in the defense to Walter, leaving her one-on-one with Ogunsami. The senior captain touched the ball past her to put the RedHawks on the board with just under 11 minutes to play.
“That was a classic Haley Walter goal,” Kramig said. “Courtney played a great ball to her and she finished. Haley struggled a bit in the first half, but she did a nice job recovering and making runs on the back line in the second half. When she does that, she is a dangerous player.”
Vanderbilt had an opportunity shortly after the tally as Charley fired a shot that Maniaci turned away once again with nine minutes remaining. That was the last shot VU took as MU salted away a season-opening win.
While the Commodores finished up with a 22-8 edge in shot attempts, the RedHawks made the adjustments they needed to at halftime as the shots were a much more even 6-4 in favor of Vanderbilt. Maniaci’s 11 saves nearly doubled her previous career high of six as she picked up her ninth career solo shutout.
“At halftime, we just needed to catch our breath and make some adjustments that we knew how to make,” Kramig said. “The second half was a totally even game. I thought that Amy Malone and Kat Zalar were fantastic tonight coming off the bench. They changed the game for us. Jess Bronke did a great job organizing things at midfield and keeping us in shape defensively. Dana Miller and Shannon Stearns had their hands full and they had very mature performances.”
Miami finishes up its season opening road trip at Western Kentucky on Sunday. The match kicks off at 1 p.m.

DeKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team earned a victory in its season-opening match on Friday night, coming from behind to defeat Lewis, 2-1, at the NIU Soccer Complex in DeKalb, Ill.
The Huskies fell behind early but responded with goals by Nicole Gobbo (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) just before halftime before Cassidy Page (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) headed in the winner in the 71st minute. Senior forward Maggie Renfro (Chaska, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) assisted on both goals for the Huskies, her first career two-assist effort.
Friday was NIU's first come-from-behind victory since a 2-1 overtime win at Toledo on Sept. 28, 2014.
"It feels great to start the season like that," Renfro said of the match. "It wasn't our best performance, but we were able to come away with a 2-1 win. So it definitely feels great to start the season with a win."
NIU shot early and often in the match, leading that category by a wide 22-7 margin throughout the 90 minutes. But it was the Flyers who broke through with the opening goal as Jessica Chavez scored directly from a corner kick in the 26th minute.
The Huskies rallied to create several chances before halftime, but it could've been 2-0 in favor of Lewis if sophomore goalkeeper Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) hadn't stopped a breakaway for the Flyers late in the first half. The Huskie goalkeeper finished with just two saves in the match, but that one special save proved crucial.
The constant NIU offensive efforts finally paid off when Gobbo tied the game with a composed finish from eight yards in the 44th minute after a nice give-and-go with Renfro. It was the 12th career goal for the senior forward, giving her sole possession of ninth place in that category in NIU women's soccer history.
The pace of the game slowed in the second half as both teams battled early season fatigue on a warm night in DeKalb, but it was the Huskies' persistent pressure that eventually decided the match.
Renfro swung in a free kick from the right wing, and Page rose highest to head in the winning goal -- the first in her career -- as the Huskies joined several hundred fans in attendance at the NIU Soccer Complex in celebrating the deciding goal in the first regular season contest in the NIU Athletics 2015-16 athletic season.
NIU head coach John Ross, beginning his fourth season at the helm of the Huskie women's soccer program, was pleased to see his team overcome early adversity in the first match of the season.
"It was great to see us come from behind to earn the victory tonight," Ross said. "Lewis is a quality opponent, and for us to come back and win in regulation was great to see. We'll hope to have an even better performance on Sunday against North Dakota."
The Huskies will welcome North Dakota to the NIU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. Admission is FREE to all fans.

Ohio recorded nine total shots, led by Manso and freshman Macey Juguilon (Brunswick, Ohio) who each registered two shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Cordoba (Bogota, Cundinamarca, Colombia) put up a fight in goal recording eight saves in her 90 minutes of work.

DETROIT, MI – Sophomore Isa Echeverri led Toledo to a great comeback and a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Detroit on Friday to begin the 2015 season. Echeverri finished with two goals in the non-league contest at Titan Field, including the match winner in the 102nd minute to help the Rockets start the year 1-0-0.
First-year head coach TJ Buchholz was excited about today's season-opening match ending with a come-from-behind victory.
"This win feels pretty good," said Buchholz, whose team trailed 2-0 early in the second half. "It was an exciting match from beginning to end. Our team talks about these types of moments when you are down, and today they responded very well."
The match started with early pressure from the home team. A quick goal from Sara Zawacki in the seventh minute put the Titans up early and swung the momentum their way.
The Rockets applied solid pressure offensively throughout the opening 45 minutes and held a 6-2 advantage in shots, but they were unable to capitalize on their chances.
The second half started the same way as the first, with a speedy goal from Detroit's Anna Mendling at the 49:19 mark.
As the second period wore on though, Toledo started to find its groove offensively and cut the margin in half in the 58th minute. Senior Geri Siudzinski placed a corner kick into the penalty box and Echeverri headed it into the back of the net to make the score 2-1.
UT's tempo picked up immediately following the goal and helped them earn another marker in the 67th minute. Sophomore Sophie Pohl ripped a beautiful strike from 15 yards out to tie the score. Immediately after the goal, senior goalkeeper Sam Tiongson kept the score tied with an athletic save in the 72nd minute.
Detroit had some chances to regain the lead in the waning moments of regulation, outshooting the Rockets 8-2 in the second half, but the Midnight Blue & Gold stood their ground defensively to force extra soccer. The match ended with each team firing 11 shots at the net.
The scoreboard would be lit up again in the second extra period, as Echeverri scored the "Golden Goal" in a very similar fashion to her first. Off a Siudzinski corner kick, the Colombia native headed the ball into the back of the frame to notch the match-winner.
Echeverri knows and understands what today's come-from-behind victory means for the team.
"We've worked very hard to get to where we are today, and it feels good to start the season with a win," Echeverri said. "Geri found me in overtime on what was almost the same goal as my first."
The Rockets will return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 23 when they travel to nationally ranked Notre Dame. The match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. and can be seen online at UND.com.
"Today's contest is definitely going to help motivate us for Notre Dame, but now this match is history, and we need to focus on a big challenge against the Fighting Irish," Echeverri said.
