Ball State:
Men's Tennis Earns Sweep Over Indiana Southeast
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University men's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep Tuesday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 11-9 on the season while IU Southeast dropped to 6-10 for the year.
“I think at this time of the year it is good to get a mid-week match if you can,” Ball State head men’s tennis coach Bill Richards said. “Practices can get a little old after you been doing it for several months, so I think it was good to keep us a little more mentally fresh. I thought IU Southeast had a solid team and made us play hard, so I think it was a positive for us and obviously a positive for them. Their coach, Joe Epkey, is one of our former players and 2007 Mid-American Conference player of the year. It is great to help them out a little bit and I think it was very beneficial for both of us.”
Ball State started with strong performances in doubles, with wins at all three positions. Lucas Andersen and Patrick Elliott along with Andrew Stutz and Matt Helm, each defeated their opponents by a score of 8-3 on their respective courts. Ray Leonard alongside teammate Collin Rigney rounded out the doubles victories after their 8-6 defeat over Chris Braun and Jonathan James on court two.
The Cardinals continued their momentum and took all six singles matches from IU Southeast all in straight sets. On court five, Patrick Downs did not give up a point, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Jacob Rankin. At the No. 3 and six singles positions, Jan Jirus and Rigney defeated their opponents 6-1, 6-0. Leonard took down Nick Roby 6-1, 6-2 on the top court while classmate Elliott beat Jonathan James 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 slot. Stutz rounded out the victories for Ball State after his 6-1, 6-3 defeat over Bryson Mills on court four.
The Ball State men's tennis team, returns to Mid-American Conference action Saturday, when it hosts Western Michigan at 1 p.m. in the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
Cardinals Earn 4-3 Win Over NIU
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team claimed a 4-3 victory over Northern Illinois Saturday in Mid-American Conference action at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
"This was a typical hard fought conference match," Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. "The top of our lineup played strong today and we played solid in doubles. Ray Leonard fought back to win a very pivotal first set and eventually got the deciding win. A loss today would have really put us in a big hole in the conference."
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 10-9 overall and 1-1 in league action, while the Huskies fall to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in the MAC.
Ball State started the match off strong by capturing the doubles point. The twosome of Matt Helm and Andrew Stutz notched the 6-2 victory over Simon Formont and Tom Hjertonsson on court three. On the top court for the Cardinals, Patrick Elliott and Lucas Andersen claimed the doubles point after posting a 6-4 win over the Huskies Kein Daun and Georg Lundkvist.
In singles action, Ball State earned wins on the top three courts in straight sets. Andersen took down Formont 6-2, 6-3 on court two while Elliott defeated Hjertonsson 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Northern Illinois fought back and won on courts four, five and six. With the match tied 3-3, Ray Leonard captured a 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory over Frederic Cadieux on court one for the Cardinals fourth and final point.
The Ball State men's tennis team returns to non-conference action Tuesday at home against Indiana University Southeast at 2:30 p.m.
Men's Tennis Defeats Butler on the Road, 5-2
The Ball State men's tennis team took home a 5-2 victory at Butler Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis. With the win, the Cardinals evened their overall record to 9-9 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 5-11 on the year.
"It was nice to bounce back with a win today after a rough loss Friday," Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. "It was an overall good team effort. Big weekend ahead!"
The Cardinals took the early 1-0 advantage over the Bulldogs after winning the doubles point. On the top court, Patrick Elliott paired up with teammate Lucas Andersen to take the 7-6 (1) defeat over Butler's Billy Weldon and Sam O'Neil. Ball State claimed the point with a win on court two after Ray Leonard and Collin Rigney defeated Brand Woods and Pulok Bhattacharya by a score of 7-5.
In singles action, Ball State took four of the six singles matches from Butler. Andersen claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sam O'Neil at the No. 1 singles position while teammate Leonard managed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Austin Woldmoe. Elliott and Patrick Downs rounded out the victories for the Cardinals after posting straight set wins on their respective courts.
Binghamton:
Men's Tennis Falls To Loyola Marymount, 6-1
LOS ANGELES - One day after posting a win over a nationally-ranked opponent, Binghamton men's tennis (5-15) was quieted by host Loyola Marymount (12-9) , 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center.
The Bearcats dropped the doubles point and then lost five of the six singles matches. Senior No. 2 Robin Lesage was the lone winner. Lesage rolled to a straight-set, 6-4, 6-1 win for his fourth straight victory.
"We had plenty of opportunities today but we didn't maintain our energy and attitude the whole way through," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "It was disappointing after the string of matches that we put together in the last five. The good news is we understand our mistakes and we have another opportunity to compete tomorrow and get back on track before our final MAC match."
Binghamton concludes its Spring Break trip with a match at UC Riverside at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Bearcats Upend UC-Irvine, 4-3
IRVINE, Calif. - Surging Binghamton men's tennis (5-14) posted its third straight win with a 4-3 upset of 72nd-ranked UC Irvine Tuesday afternoon at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. The host Anteaters were the ninth nationally-ranked opponent BU has faced this season and the win was BU's first over a ranked opponent since 2011 (4-3 win over #74 Princeton).
Playing the first of three Spring Break matches in California, BU dropped the doubles point but won four of the six singles matches to rally.
Senior No. 3 Ismael Dinia kept up his strong play with a three-set singles win. Dinia has won six of his last seven matches. Classmate Robin Lesage clinched the win in a second-set tiebreak at No. 2. Lesage, the reigning MAC Player of the Week, saved a set point at 6-7 before closing out the match with three straight points. Junior No. 4 Eliott Hureau won his third straight match. Up top, junior Sid Hazarika followed up a doubles win with a strong 6-3, 6-4 showing in singles. He has won three of his last four singles matches.
"We were a bit flat and struggled to get going in the doubles today but we did a great job of putting it behind ourselves quickly and then we played with great energy and focus in singles," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "That's been the story of the year for this team ... we looked adversity straight in the eyes and just kept going about our business. Robin (Lesage) personified that when he lost a point that should've given him a 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker. Instead of getting distracted by it, he went back to work, saved a set point and closed out the match for the fourth point. Ismael (Dinia) didn't play great technically today, but he battled with heart and determination and found a way to win.
"We did it the tough way today ... on the road, after a long day of travel, at No. 72, losing the doubles point. That's a big confidence boost for us and a well-earned win," Zieziula said.

Men's Tennis Tops Toledo, 5-2
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis earned its second straight crucial Mid-American Conference win, pushing past Toledo 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Bearcats (4-14, 2-2 MAC) quickly grabbed the doubles point and then won four of the six single matches to even their MAC mark at 2-2 with one conference match remaining. With the win, BU moved into third place in the MAC standings. The top four teams advance to the MAC tournament.
Indoors at the BTC, BU won a pair of 6-3 matches to make quick work of the doubles point. Then in singles, senior Ismael Dinia again set the tone, exiting the courts first for the second straight match with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3. Classmate Robin Lesage followed shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 and the Bearcats were on their way. Needing one more point to clinch the victory, junior No. 4 Eliott Hureau rebounded after dropping the opening set and his 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win sealed the team triumph.
"I am so proud of the way this team has continued to battle," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "To have that big losing streak and continue to work ... it says a lot about their dedication. Now we have put ourselves in a situation where we can control our own destiny on the last day of the regular season to secure a place in the MAC tournament."
Zieziula was especially pleased with his team's continued doubles play. The Bearcats captured the doubles point for the fourth straight match.
"Our doubles has been great all year and that continued again today, we got the first break on all three courts. You also can't say enough about how Ismael (Dinia) has stepped up his game in the last few matches, again giving us the first point in singles with an efficient win at No. 3. He wasn't feeling 100% physically today but he competed with such focus and determination that there was no stopping him."
The Bearcats now head to California for two matches - Tuesday at Cal-Irvine and Thursday at Cal-Riverside. Binghamton then hosts Ball State on April 19 in the regular-season finale.

Bearcats Win First MAC Match Over Buffalo, 5-2
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis grinded out a 5-2 win over longtime SUNY rival and current Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo in an emotional four+ hour match Wednesday afternoon at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
The Bearcats captured the doubles point with tiebreak wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then won the first three completed singles matches to seal the team victory. Senior captain Robin Lesage clinched the win with a three-set triumph at second singles.
The win, BU's first in the MAC in their inaugural season, opened the door for the Bearcats to make a run at qualifying for the MAC Championship in late April. The top four teams advance. Binghamton, which had dropped its first two MAC contests by narrow 4-3 scores, currently sits in fourth place with two conference duals remaining.
"What a great college tennis match today from both schools," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "I'm so proud of our team. We have faced a lot of adversity this year and when you lose that many matches in a row it's easy for people to check out. But this group has continued to work hard, pull together and trust themselves."
Holding a 1-0 lead after doubles, Binghamton swept the top four singles spots, with senior No. 3 Ismael Dinia winning a 6-3, 6-4 match to pave the way. Junior No. 4 Eliott Hureau gave BU a 3-0 lead with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. After Lesage clinched it, junior No. 1 Sid Hazarika won in a tight 7-6 tiebreak in the third set to seize his match.
After the match was decided, Buffalo won the final two singles matches to get on the board.
"The doubles point was critical today," Zieziula said. "There were three tiebreakers and we won two of them and led in the third. We stayed with the game plan and kept being aggressive with our feet. Our seniors have been stepping up big when we need them the most, Ismael (Dinia) played another great doubles match today and then for the second straight match gave us a 2-0 lead by finishing his opponent in singles with efficiency. Robin (Lesage) rebounded after a tough loss in the first set to just dominate the second set.
"Our work has only just begun for the week- we need to be ready for a tough Toledo squad on Saturday."
Binghamton hosts Toledo at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The season isn't over yet and we have to make a push this weekend when we go to Toledo to take on another tough team."

Bulls Suffer Setback In MAC Opener
BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at Mid-American Conference opponent Binghamton Wednesday afternoon. The Bulls (8-8, 0-1 MAC) dropped a pair of doubles matches to the Bearcats (3-14, 1-2 MAC), before picking up singles wins at the fifth and sixth spots in their MAC opener.
"We expected Binghamton to play like their backs were against the wall, and they did," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "Credit to them and Coach Nick, they really played well. They have the toughest schedule in the MAC and their record is no indication of their level. We struggled adapting to the conditions and didn't get the big points that we needed."
A tight match, UB's third doubles duo of senior Damien David and junior Akhil Mehta was edged 7-6 (4), before BU took the doubles point with a 7-6 (3) first doubles win over junior Sergio Arevalillo and sophomore Jonathan Hannestad, thus suspending Pablo Alvarez and Amar Hromic's second doubles match at 6-6.
Hannestad defeated Thomas Caputo at fifth singles, 7-6 (4), 6-3, and Arevalillo took Frenk Kote, 7-5, 6-2, at the sixth position for UB's two victories. Alvarez, went three at first singles, but was defeated by Sid Hazarika, 7-5, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (5). David, too, played extras at second singles, dropping a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 outcome to Robin Lesage. Eliott Hureau outlasted Hromic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at four.
"Now we are faced with a tough road trip to a very good Western team, and we have to keep our heads up and play like our backs are against the wall."

The Bulls claimed the doubles session with two straight wins but the Broncos dominated singles play, winning five of the six matches on the court to deliver the win. Things didn’t necessarily come easily, though, as three matches required full third sets and three set tiebreakers were also required. Jefta Kecic delivered the clinching victory for the Broncos, bouncing back from a second set loss to win a full third set tiebreaker over Damien David.
Matt Hamilton notched the first point of the afternoon for WMU with a straight-sets win over Amar Hromic, winning 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles match to tie the session at 1-1. Jimmy Beckwith delivered a win in the No. 6 singles match over Sergio Arevalillo to make it 2-1, and Maik Steiner gave the Broncos a 3-1 advantage when he won a second-set tiebreaker over Pablo Alvarez to win the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Jonathan Hannestad sliced the Broncos’ advantage to 3-2 with a win over Andrew Cahn in the No. 5 singles match, but Kecic recorded the all-important fourth point with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (1) victory over David in the No. 2 slot. Ruben Greiner wrapped up the scoring for the Broncos with a similar result over Sebastian Ionescu in the No. 3 singles match, winning a third-set tiebreaker for a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (9) victory.
