Ball State:
Cardinals Fall at No. 30 Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 30 Indiana Sunday afternoon at the IU Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 5-7 on the season while the Hoosiers improve to 9-5 overall.
"I thought we came out ready to play in doubles today and had some chances but didn't convert," Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. "I had hoped to push them more in singles but We had some sets where we got blown out and let them off too easy.we have to move forward and keep getting better."
On court one, Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette started doubles off for the Hoosiers with a 6-4 win over the Lucas Andersen and Patrick Elliott. Sven Lalic and Raheel Manji clinched the doubles point for IU after defeating Matt Helm and Andrew Stutz 6-4 at the No. 3 doubles position.
In singles action, the Cardinals soon fell behind 2-0 to the Hoosiers after Elliott dropped a straight set match to Lalic on court three. Mathew McCoy put IU up 3-0 after taking down Jan Jirus 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles position and then Monette took the fourth and final point from Ball State with his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ray Leonard on court one.
The Ball State men’s tennis team will continue its non-conference action on the road Saturday when it plays at Illinois State at 1 p.m. in Normal, Ill. After that, the Cardinals return home for their first Mid-American Conference competition of the season, when Ball State hosts Toledo Friday, March 27 at 1 p.m. in the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
Men's Tennis Earns Home Win Over IUPUI
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team earned a 5-2 come from behind victory at home against IUPUI Friday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the win the Caridnals improve to 7-7 on the season while the Jaguars fall to 4-11 on the year.
"We came back strong after a horrible performance in doubles," Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. "IUPUI came with better energy and fire. As time went on we adjusted and took control in singles. It was a solid performance but we have to keep getting better if we are going to be a factor in the conference."
IUPUI dominated doubles play, after Patrick O'Neil and Alex Toliver took down the Cardinals twosome of Patrick Elliott and Andrew Stutz on court one, 6-3. Ball State's No. 3 doubles tandem team of Lucas Andersen and Matt Helm woud lose their match 6-1 to David Beasley and Jose Calero.
But it was the Cardinals who came on strong during singles play, winning five of the six matches against the Jaguars. Andersen, Ray Leonard and Collin Rigney each took their opponents down in straight sets. Elliott won a three set match over Adam Reinhart on court three, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Jan Jirus also earned a three set victory over David Beasley at the No. 4 singles position, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Binghamton:
Bearcats Fall at Cornell
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Visiting Cornell, ranked No. 50 in the country, captured the doubles point before rattling off all six singles wins en route to a 7-0 victory over Binghamton Saturday night at the Binghamton Tennis Center. It was BU's sixth consecutive match against a nationally-ranked opponent.
"We came ready to compete today but we missed some key deuce points and break opportunities and then we didn't do a good enough job of responding to that adversity," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "We've got to work to remain positive, staying focused on what we can do in the present tense and not worry about the outcome."
The Bearcats (2-10) head to Queens on Friday to face St. John's.
