Akron:

Women's Tennis Falls To Liberty, 5-2

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Liberty on Sunday morning at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.  It marked the second loss for the Zips (5-2 overall) this spring, while the Flames improved to 6-1 overall.

In doubles action, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) and freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Maria Khval and Brittany Yang, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. With the No. 2 doubles going to Liberty, all eyes were on the No. 3 team. Senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) and sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) battled Belen Rivera and Mariely Hassey, losing in eight match points, 7-6 (8-6).

In singles play, sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogliev, Belarus) won at the No. 1 spot, defeating Belen Rivera, 6-3, 6-4. At the No. 6 spot, Geier claimed a 6-3, 6-3, win over Evangeline Crist.

"Tough loss today to a very strong team," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Losing the doubles' point in that fashion was tough to swallow, but we came out and fought hard in singles. This is great preparation for the conference season though."

Akron travels to Madison, Wis., on Feb. 13-14. The Zips face the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday at 4 p.m. and Utah State on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Zips Sweep NJIT

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team captured its fifth consecutive victory with a 7-0 win of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Friday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.  The Zips improved to 5-1 overall, while the Highlanders fell to 0-3 overall.

In doubles action, UA captured the doubles' point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogliev, Belarus) and freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Ines Vujkovac and Alba Rosas Garcia, 6-0. At No. 3 doubles, junior Madison Cohen (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) swept Sydney Nowak and Valerie Carroll, 6-0.

It was a clean sweep for the Zips in singles action, winning every match. At No. 1, Maksimava defeated Carolina Zanotta, 7-5, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) won a hard-fought battle against Nathalie Habegger, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (6), in the final match to finish. At No. 3 singles, senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) remained undefeated with 6-0, 6-1 win over Ines Vujkovac. She stands 5-0 overall in singles action this spring.

"Good win today to keep things rolling right now," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We were pushed hard on a couple of courts, which will definitely help us as we continue through this difficult stretch of matches. Sunday will be another difficult match, and we need to be sharper with our play, but I feel confident that we will play well."

Ball State:

Ball State Women's Tennis Defeats Evansville, 6-1

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team earned a convincing 6-1 victory against Evansville, Sunday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  The Cardinals improve their overall mark to 3-2 on the season with the win, while the Purple Aces dropped to 2-2.

"Evansville fought very hard today,” Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said.  "They have some great players and competed well.  I thought we had a total team effort today.  I was pleased by our attitude and I think that was a great match for us going forward."

After losing in non-conference action Friday against Xavier, the Cardinals got back track at the start of the match today after taking the doubles point from Evansville.  Courtney Wild alongside teammate Bethany Moore took down Andjela Brquljan and Kennedy Craig by a score of 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles position.  At No. 3 doubles, Olivia Large and Toni Ormond did not give up a point to Marina Moreno and Gaby Fifer winning the match 6-0.

Ball State took five of the six singles matches from Evansville.  Wild, Moore and Large all defeated their opponents in straight sets at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively.  Earnest took a three set thriller from Nathasha James after dropping the first set 6-4 she would come back in sets two and three for the 6-4, 6-1 victory.  At No. 4 singles, Ormond found herself down 6-2 after the first set, she then fought her way back by winning sets two and three by a score of 6-4, 6-3 clinching the match for the Cardinals.

The Ball State women's tennis team will continue to play non-conference action at home Friday against Bradley at 6 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.


Cardinals Suffer Setback at Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Ball State women's tennis team fell to 2-2 on the season after suffering a 4-0 setback to Xavier Friday night.

"Xavier is a great program and definitely a championship caliber team, Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said.  "I didn't do a great job preparing us and i need to have us more ready for doubles. We will be ready against Evansville. Go cards!"

The Cardinals trailed the Musketeers 1-0 after doubles play.  Bethany Moore and Courtney Wild fell 6-2 to Amina Ismail and Sydney Liggins at the No. 1 position.  Toni Ormond and Rosalinda Calderon dropped a 6-3 decision to Alex Brinker and Cristina Di Lorenzo at the No. 2 spot for the point.  Despite losing the doubles point, Courtney Earnest teammed up with Ashlyn Rang at No. 3 doubles and was leading the match 4-3 before the Musketeers claimed the point.

Xavier clinched the match after winning at the No.3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions all in straight sets.  Wild, Earnest and Moore's matches at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 spots went unfinished.


Bowling Green:

Badgers Best Falcons, 7-0

The University of Wisconsin downed the Bowling Green State University tennis team, 7-0, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7). The non-conference dual match was held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

"We played a tough and experienced Wisconsin team today," said BGSU head coach Olga Elkin. "The girls fought and battled hard, and I was proud of the effort they gave."

The Badgers, now 2-1 this season, captured the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories at the top-two flights and a 6-0 win at the third flight.

In singles play, the hosts captured wins at each of the six flights. Sophomore Leeah Floyd, after dropping her first set to Kelsey Grambeau at the fourth flight, captured three games before falling in the second set.

Sophomore Harley Hutchison and freshman Megan Miller each won two games in their second set at the first and second flights, respectively, while freshman Emily Witt won a pair of games in her opening set vs. UW's Sydney Rider at flight number three.

Freshman Sydney Seeley captured a game in each of her sets vs. the Badgers' Ekaterina Stepanova at the sixth flight on Saturday.

The Falcons now return home to prepare for a pair of matches at the Perrysburg Tennis Center next weekend. BGSU hosts Cleveland State on Friday (Feb. 13) in a 6:00 p.m. start, and the Brown and Orange then will face Cincinnati Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) at 2:00 p.m.

Falcons Fall 7-0 To Marquette

Host Marquette University won the doubles point, and rode that momentum to a 7-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University tennis team on Friday (Feb. 6). The non-conference dual match was held at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

"I saw a lot of really good things from the girls today," said Falcon head coach Olga Elkin. "It's the best I've seen a few of them play. The competitiveness and hard work combined are now showing, which translates into having fun on the court."

The Golden Eagles (5-0) captured each of the doubles matches by 6-1 scores. Erin Gebes and Ana Pimienta got past sophomore Harley Hutchison and freshman Megan Miller at the top flight, while Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner downed sophomore Leeah Floyd and freshman Emily Witt in second-flight action.

At the third flight, MU's Vanessa Foltinger and Paula Tormos Sanchez topped sophomore Antonina Farrar and freshman Sydney Seeley.

In singles action, the Golden Eagles took each of the matches in straight sets. Miller battled Gebes through the first set of their second-flight match before falling by a 6-3 score, and Gebes went on to win the second set by a 6-2 result.

Hutchison represented the Falcons at the top singles flight, facing Pimienta. BGSU's remaining lineup, from flights three through six, included Witt, Floyd, Farrar and Seeley.

Buffalo:  

Bulls Take Top Two Singles Matches, But Fall To West Virginia

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York women's tennis team (1-2) won the top two singles matches, but fell to visiting West Virginia (2-1), 5-2, Friday evening at the Miller Tennis Center.

The Mountaineers edged UB for the doubles point, picking up a 7-6 victory at the third spot with the matches knotted at 1-1. Bulls Laura Holterbosch and Laura Fernandez picked up a 6-3 victory at second doubles.

UB dropped the fifth and sixth singles matches, but would force three sets in the remaining four. Sophomore Margarita Kotok defeated Lyn Yuen Choo, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, at the second position, before WVU snagged nail biters at the fourth and third spots to secure the win. Freshman Tanja Stojanovska iced the match in tie-breaking fashion, outlasting Kaja Mrgole, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5).

The Bulls return to play on Feb. 20-21 hosting ASA College on Friday and Youngstown State on Saturday.

Eastern Michigan:

Eagles Fall At Nebraska, 6-1

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at the hands of the University of Nebraska on Sunday, Feb. 8. The Eagles (1-5) won just one singles match in the loss to the Cornhuskers.

Eastern was swept in doubles play, 3-0. The No. 3-doubles duo of Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna was closest to winning their contest, falling 7-6. At No. 1, Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska did not have the same success, dropping a 6-3 match, while Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero fell by the same tally.

In singles play, Supejova was the only Eagle on the left side of the ledger, defeating Nebraska's Maggie Lehmicke, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. EMU was swept in the remainder of the singles contests, with Renu Sharma as the only member of the squad taking her match to three sets, before falling, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0, at No. 6.

"We just didn't close out enough close sets, some with decent leads, to have a shot at victory today," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Our level of play is decent, but a lot of specifics need to improve. I think the level of intensity hit another level this week, and it needs to keep progressing."

Eastern returns to the court for a Saturday, Feb. 14, Valentine's Day dual match with the University of Pittsburgh. The Eagles and Panthers are scheduled to get the match underway at 5 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Eagles Fall To Drake, 4-3

LINCOLN, Neb. --  Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team dropped its second-straight dual match Saturday, Feb. 7, when the Eagles (1-4) dropped a 4-3 decision to Drake University at the University of Nebraska.

The Eagles dropped the doubles point after the duo of Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero, along with the No. 3-doubles team of Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna each dropped 6-3 decisions. At No. 1-doubles, Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska had their match suspended at the score of 4-4.

With a 1-0 lead, Drake took the No. 4-6-doubles matches. Supejova defeated Drake's Mariel Ante, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 1, while Gogvadze continued her winning ways, knocking off Summer Brills, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Martinovska defeated DU's Tess Herder at No. 3-singles, 6-3, 7-5, giving EMU their third point, but the Green and White was unable to hold the Bulldogs, falling 4-3.

"We played with a much better level of intensity today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Drake is a strong team, and I saw much better things than our previous losses. Despite the loss, this was a step forward."

Eastern Michigan returns to the court Sunday, Feb. 8, when the Eagles take on Nebraska. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. CT.

Miami:

RedHawks Drop Thriller To Xavier

HAMILTON, Ohio – Despite holding both a late 3-2 lead and match point, Miami University’s women’s tennis team was unable to pull out a victory, falling 4-3 Saturday to the Xavier Musketeers at the Riverside Athletic Club. The final point of the day was determined by a thrilling 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 match between junior Ana Rajkovic and Xavier’s Lauren Ghidotti. The Xavier freshman overcame a first-set loss to take down Rajkovic in a pulsating 8-6 tiebreaker marked by extended rallies, before finally breaking her opponent on match point in the third.

The RedHawks (1-4) started the day strong with two decisive doubles victories as Rajkovic and sophomore Andreea Badileanu won 6-1 and the pair of senior Alix Thurman and freshman Hannah Shteyn continued their winning streak with a 6-4 result. After clinching the point, the Musketeers (4-2) quickly tied the match before Shteyn won her sixth flight contest with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Daniella Patton. In the first flight, senior Christine Guerrazzi put aside a difficult first set to force a second-set tiebreaker against Xavier standout Sydney Liggins before finally falling, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Thurman came from behind in the final set in her victorious 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 matchup against Cristina Di Lorenzo. That result put the RedHawks up 3-2 with two matches remaining, however, Xavier would rally to pick up the final two points and the victory.

Miami will now turn their attention to a pair of matches next weekend in Atlanta, Ga. against Georgia State and Furman. The RedHawks will face the hosting Panthers on Saturday Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. and the Paladins on Sunday Feb. 15 at 10:00 a.m. Check MURedHawks.com for recaps and statistics from both of next weekend’s matches.

Northern Illinois:

Huskies Open Year With 4-0 Start

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team improved to 4-0 to begin a spring season for the first time in at least a decade, defeating Hope College 6-1 on Saturday at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.

The Huskies dashed Hope's hopes by taking every doubles match and winning five of the six singles matchups to win at home for the second consecutive weekend following last Saturday's 4-3 victory over Bradley.

Senior Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central), who set the NIU career combined wins record last weekend, picked up another two wins by winning her No. 1 singles match in straight sets and teaming up with Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) to take the No. 1 doubles dual.

Youel's sister Evelyn also earned her first win of the spring, winning the No. 2 doubles match with Mary Malkin (Tel Aviv, Israel), who was victorious in her No. 3 singles match as well. NIU head coach Tanya Gombera has the Huskies off to a historic start in 2015, and she expressed her delight at earning another win after Saturday's match.

"Today was another great performance by the team against a solid team like Hope," Gombera said. "I felt the team responded to some tough tests that Hope presented, and we're very happy to pick up another victory."

Also earning wins for the Huskies were Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) and Jennifer Gates (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) in No. 3 doubles and Alvarez, De La Torre and Abigail Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) in other singles matches.

The Huskies will seek to continue their undefeated start to the spring when they welcome Milwaukee to the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford next Thursday at 2 p.m. CT.


Toledo:

Rockets Earn 5-2 Win Over Cleveland State

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo women’s tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Cleveland State on Sunday at Shadow Valley Tennis Club to improve to 3-3 on the season.

The Rockets opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three matchups. UT has won the doubles point in all six matches this year.

Sophomore Lauren Thai and senior Pia Rygh earned a 6-4 victory in the top doubles spot, and the duo of freshman Sidnay Huck and junior Mackenzie Bowman won by the same score at No. 3 doubles to clinch the first point of the match.

Toledo would go on to win four of the six singles matches as well.

Rygh took home a 6-1, 7-6 victory at the top singles spot, while Thai and junior Emily Mazzola each earned hard-fought three-set wins at No. 3 and 6 singles, respectively.

Junior Katelyn Nguyen won 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets at No. 5 singles to improve to 4-2 on the year.

The Rockets are back in action with two home matches next weekend. Toledo will welcome Cincinnati on Friday, Feb. 13 and IPFW on Sunday, Feb. 15.

Both matches will be held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.


Toledo Drops 4-3 Decision To Detroit

SOUTHFIELD, MI - The Toledo women’s tennis team fell to 2-3 on the season, losing to Detroit, 4-3, in a back-and-forth away match at the Franklin Athletic Club.

“Coach Mauntler and I have been extremely impressed by the way we have been playing doubles this season,” graduate assistant coach James Thorp said. “We did a great job coming out with energy and taking control early. We saw some progress on the singles court today and showed some good fight deep in the match, but we need to work on being mentally tough throughout the entire match as we move on to Cleveland State Sunday.”

The Rockets captured the doubles point by winning two of the three matchups.

Senior Lexy Pitt and junior Emily Mazzola led off doubles competition with a 6-1 victory in the No. 2 doubles spot, while the duo of senior Pia Rygh and sophomore Lauren Thai clinched the point at No. 1 doubles with a 6-2 win.

Both doubles teams are now 4-1 on the year, as Toledo holds a 10-4 overall record in doubles play this season.

In singles action, junior Katelyn Nguyen improved to 3-2 on the year with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles, while Rygh won 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 at the top singles spot for her second win of the season.

In a crucial No. 6 singles matchup, Mazzola fought back after losing the first set to win the second frame and send the match into a deciding third set before falling 6-3 in the third.
