Ball State Drops 7-0 Decision at Notre Dame
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis competed against its second-straight nationally ranked opponent in two days Sunday, when the Cardinals fell 7-0 to No. 16 Notre Dame at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
Ball State trailed 1-0 early on in the match after the Fighting Irish took the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Patrick Elliott and Andrew Stutz took a point from Notre Dame's No. 8 doubles tandem Alex Lawson and Billy Pecor but lost 6-1. Ray Leonard alongside teammate Collin Rigney fell at the No. 2 position 6-3 while fellow Cardinals Lucas Andersen and Matt Helm suffered a 6-2 setback on court No. 3.
Notre Dame took all six singles match from Ball State all in straight sets. Andersen was the final match on court No. 1 and scored the most points out of all the Cardinals but fell to No. 37 Quentin Monaghan, 6-4, 7-5. Both Leonard and Stutz lost 6-3, 6-4 to their opponents at the No. 3 and No. 5 singles positions.
The Ball State men's tennis team returns home Friday when it hosts Xavier at 2 p.m. at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
Cardinals Fall To Michigan State
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team lost 7-0 on Saturday afternoon against No. 60 Michigan State at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-4 on the season while the Spartans improve to 5-3 overall.
The Cardinals lost the doubles points to enter singles play down 1-0. Patrick Elliott paired up with Andrew Stutz at No. 1 singles and put up a good 7-6 fight against Gijs Linders and Brett Forman. At No. 2 doubles, Ray Leonard alongside teammate Colin Rigney also took Michigan State's duo to the very end but would end up losing also by a score of 7-6.
Michigan State would take all six singles matches from Ball State. Andersen fell to Linders in a two-set tiebreaker at the No. 1 singles position. Newcomer Jan Jirus managed to take a set from Mac Roy at the No. 4 spot but lost 5-7, 6-4, 10-7, the remainder of the Cardinals fell to the Spartans in straight sets.
Binghamton:
Binghamton Falls At Western Michigan
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - For the second time in three days, Binghamton men's tennis (2-2, 0-2 MAC) played a tight match against a new conference foe but came up short in a 4-3 defeat - this time against Western Michigan (5-3, 1-0 MAC) Sunday afternoon at the West Hills Athletic Club.
The Broncos captured the pivotal doubles point before the teams split the six singles matches.
The Bearcats earned wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Junior Eliott Hureau made it two in a row agianst MAC opponents with his straight-set win at No. 3. Senior Ismael Dinia dropped the first set in his match at fourth singles before storming back to win. Sophomore No. 5 Thomas Caputo earned a 6-2, 6-4 win for BU's other point.'
But the hosts took the opening point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and then clinched the win with a three-set victory at No. 2 singles.
Binghamton next plays at VCU on February 13.

Bearcats Drop MAC Opener at NIU
ROCKFORD, Ill. - Binghamton men's tennis (2-1, 0-1 MAC) suffered a narrow 4-3 setback against host Northern Illinois (4-2, 1-0 MAC) in the team's opening match Friday afternoon at the Boylan Tennis Center.
The Bearcats grabbed early momentum by winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Singles wins by senior No. 2 Robin Lesage and junior No. 3 Eliott Hureau put BU one point away from a victory, but the host Huskies won the other four singles matches, including a pair of three-setters, to steal the home win.
"I'm proud of the progress that we have made in our doubles and we battled hard as a team but it is a very disappointing result today," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "We can't drop matches after the taking the doubles and starting that strong in singles. We let a big opportunity slip today but if we learn from today we can take some big steps forward in the coming matches."

Buffalo:
Bulls Edge Past Cleveland State, 4-3
WESTLAKE, OH – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team outlasted host Cleveland State, 4-3, Saturday evening at Paramount Tennis Club. The Bulls (5-3) won their fourth out of their last five matches, while handing the Vikings (3-1) their first loss of the spring season.
"This was a major test for our guys," said head coach Lee Nickell. "To drive to Cleveland and play on a new surface with just an hour to prepare was brutal. Our guys dealt with the adversity and did a good job closing out a close match. I am very proud of Sergio (Arevalillo) winning a third set in such a pressure situation."
UB opened the match winning two of three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad and junior Sergio Arevalillo secured a 6-4 win at the number one spot, but CSU picked up a 6-4 win at second doubles to deadlock action at 1-1. Junior Akhil Mehta and freshman Noah Hajdu-Andersson edged the Vikings, 7-6 (3) to secure the doubles point for the Bulls.
In singles play, the teams went one-for-one trading victories. UB fell at the top spot, before senior Sebastian Ionescu defeated Ali Shabib, 6-3, 6-2, at second singles. The Vikings took the number three match, but UB again answered. Hannestad battled to outlast Manuel Bellutti, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. CSU knotted play at 3-3 with a win at sixth singles.
Arevalillo led UB to victory in come-from-behind fashion. He suffered a 7-5 setback in the first set, but would force a third winning the second, 6-4. Arevalillo cruised to a 6-3 win in the final frame.
The Bulls will return to action on Feb. 20-21 hosting Niagara on Friday at 7 pm and Youngstown State Saturday at 1 pm.

Northern Illinois:
Huskies Rally Past Binghamton in League Opener
ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over Binghamton on Friday afternoon in its Mid-American Conference opening match at Boylan Tennis Center. After dropping the doubles point, the Huskies rallied to win four singles matches to improve to 4-2 on the season.
“This game had every emotion you could have,” said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. “It went back-and-forth until the end. It was truly a great game and both teams had multiple opportunities win.
“Obviously I’m happy for the guys but to have this experience, I'm hopeful this will help our young team as the season progresses. In sports there are never any guarantees from one week to the next so we need continue getting better. We have a lot improving to do but we are always going forward not matter what.”
After falling behind with the doubles point, NIU rallied with four singles victories, including a pair of three set wins. Junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory at number one over Sid Hazarika while at number six, sophomore Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) was a 6-3, 6-0 victor over Frenk Kote.
The Bearcats earned a win at number three, leaving the decision to the trio of three-set matches at two, four and five.
Freshman Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) dropped the first set at number five, 6-1, but rallied past Thomas Caputo with a 6-3 second set victory and a 6-3 third set win.
The closest match of the day came at number four as freshman Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) played nearly even with Binghamton’s Ismael Dinia through two sets, each claiming a set, 7-6. In the third, Lundkvist clinched the match with a 7-5 victory as NIU opened league play with a victory.
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, as they host Western Illinois and Youngstown State in Rockford. The match against the Leathernecks is slated for 1 p.m., with the match against the Penguins to follow at 5 p.m.

Toledo:
Rockets Extend Winning Streak To Six
OUNGSTOWN, OH – Toledo extended its longest winning streak of the season to six matches on Tuesday as it swept a road doubleheader over Duquesne and Youngstown State. With the wins, the Midnight Blue & Gold improves to 7-4 on the season with six wins in the past five days.
"This was an early and long day and the guys were running on fumes from travel," head coach Al Wermer said. "The guys did a nice job of winning ugly."
The Rockets won their first match over Duquesne in Pittsburgh, PA by the score of 4-3, fighting back to take home the victory after losing the doubles point.
Toledo handed the Dukes their first loss of the year after claiming four of six singles matchups to clinch the win, despite losing two of three doubles matchups.
Sophomore Stjepan Sisko won his sixth-straight match to improve to 8-1 on the year at the top singles spot with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Senior Mark Singnil won his fifth-consecutive match at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Senior Nicky Wong recorded his sixth win of the season by winning 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles spot, while fellow senior Roberto Meza clinched the Toledo victory by holding off his opponent at No. 6 singles 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 for the fourth and deciding point.
In match No. 2 on the day, the Rockets won their second-straight nailbiter of the day, defeating Youngstown State 4-3.
Toledo led off the match by capturing the doubles point, winning the two completed matchups.
Sisko and junior Garrett Cona teamed up at No. 1 doubles for a 6-3 win, while Meza and Singnil won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Sisko earned his ninth-straight win (9-1 on the season), with another straight set victory, 7-6, 6-4, at the top singles spot. Wong also earned his second win of the day at No. 3 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph.
Freshman Omar Espinosa improved to 5-4 on the year with a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to clinch Toledo's sixth-straight win.
The Rockets are back in action this weekend with away matches on Friday, Feb. 13 at Wisconsin-Green Bay and Saturday, Feb. 14 at Marquette.
Toledo Wins Both Matches In Home Doubleheader
TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo men’s tennis team swept its home doubleheader on Saturday, with a 6-1 victory against Northwestern Ohio and a 7-0 sweep of Wayne State at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
In the first match of the day, the Rockets won two of three doubles matchups to claim the doubles point.
Sophomore Stjepan Sisko and freshman Omar Espinosa won 6-3 in the top doubles spot, while senior Mark Singnil and freshman Stephen Miller recorded a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Toledo would go on to win six of seven singles matches, as Sisko earned his third-straight match at No. 1 singles.
Singnil, senior Nicky Wong, Espinosa and Miller each earned singles victories in the match as well, at Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 6, respectively.
Sisko improved to 7-1 on the season with his fourth-consecutive singles victory later in the day vs. the Warriors and won his second doubles match of the day with Espinosa.
Singnil, Wong, Cona, Meza and Miller all each earned singles wins as well against Wayne State.
The Rockets are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 10 when they hit the road to take on Duquesne and Youngstown State.
Rockets Sweep Butler and Ferris State, 5-2
TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo men’s tennis team got back on the winning track on Friday, sweeping its doubleheader against Butler and Ferris State. The team improved to 3-4 on the year.
"The good thing about the Butler match is we had to fight back after losing doubles,” head coach Al Wermer said. “Ferris also pushed us hard, so these pressure situations toughen us for later in the season."
The Rockets opened the day by defeating the Bulldogs 5-2 despite losing the doubles point.

Sisko and Espinosa teamed up again in the top doubles spot and won their second match of the day, 6-4. The duo of junior Garrett Cona and freshman Stephen Miller combined for a 7-6 in No. 3 singles to help the Midnight Blue & Gold clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Sisko, Espinosa and Meza earned their second wins of the day, while Miller added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles to close out the scoring for the Rockets.
With the wins, Sisko improved to 5-1 on the year, while Espinosa sits at 3-3 on the season. Miller’s victory against FSU was his first in his collegiate career.
The Rockets are back in action with another doubleheader Saturday against Northwestern Ohio and Wayne State.
Western Michigan:
WMU Wins MAC Opener
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men’s tennis team picked up its third straight win on Sunday as the Broncos opened Mid-American Conference play with a 4-3 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats at West Hills Athletic Club.
The match was neck-and-neck throughout and ultimately came down to a pair of three-set matches remaining to decide it. Maik Steiner claimed the clinching victory over Robin Lesage in the No. 2 singles match, overcoming a second-set loss to win 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 to ice away the win.
Steiner was a key part of the doubles success for the Broncos as well, teaming with Ruben Greiner to beat Sid Hazarinka and Ismael Dinia 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles match to give WMU a one-match advantage in the doubles session. After the Bearcats tied doubles play with a win at No. 2, the duo of Jefta Kecic and Jimmy Beckwith prevailed 6-4 over Thomas Caputo and Frenk Kote to give the Broncos the extra point they would need for the win.
The Bearcats tied the team match with a win at No. 3 singles, but Beckwith struck again with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kote to put the Broncos back on top 2-1. Kecic made it a 3-2 advantage with a straight-sets victory over Hazarinka at No. 1, and Steinver ended up closing out the match with the three-set win over Lesage.

Broncos Sweep Doubleheader
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men’s tennis team swept its first doubleheader of the 2015 dual match season, pulling out a 4-3 win over the IPFW Mastodons in the early match and racing past the UW-Green Bay Phoenix for a 5-2 victory in the nightcap. With the wins the Broncos improve to 4-3 on the season. WMU will play its first Mid-American Conference match of the season on Sunday when they host Binghamton to wrap the weekend.
Matt Hamilton went 3-0 on the day by being the only Bronco to win both of his singles matches as well as a doubles match, teaming with Stephen Payne to help WMU clinch the doubles point in both of their matches. Jimmy Beckwith also went undefeated in doubles play, teaming with both Marc Shideler and Jefta Kecic to record wins.The Broncos dropped just one doubles match on the day. Hamilton was the only Bronco go win two singles matches on the afternoon, as well.
The day began with the win over the Mastodons, with the doubles pairing of Beckwith and Shideler strking first with a 6-4 win over Karl Wangensten-Oye and Connor Andrews at the No. 3 doubles position. Maik Steiner and Ruben Greiner finished things up shortly thereafter, beating the Mastodons’ top doubles pairing of Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi by an identical score to take the doubles point for the Broncos.
Steiner was the first singles player off the court, blowing past Guell 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 1 position to put his team ahead 2-0. IPFW countered with wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles to tie the team match up at two points apiece, but Pablo Mora snapped the tie with a three-set win over Andrews at No. 6 to move the Broncos ahead 3-2. Hamilton clinched the team win for the Broncos just before the Mastodons could truly put it in doubt, beating Daniel Cardenas 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles spot for WMU’s fourth point of the match.
The match against the Phoenix started out much in the same way, with Payne and Hamilton securing a 6-1 win over Green Bay’s Howard Scott and Florian Kraenzler for the first doubles win of the session. Beckwith and Kecic provided the clincher from the No. 3 doubles spot, beating Joey Leto and Marius Merz 6-4 to put the Broncos ahead 1-0 in the team match. The Broncos raced out quickly and singles and clinched the team win before the Phoenix could put a single point on the board, starting with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Ruben Greiner over Howard Scott at the No. 3 spot. Hamilton posted a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Josh Schramm at No. 4 to make the score 3-0, and Beckwith survived a first-set tiebreaker with Jorge Soler to win 7-6 (7), 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the team win. Kecic rounded out the scoring for WMU with a three-set victory at No. 1 singles over Michael Tenzer, winning 6-7 (3), 7-5, 1-0 (7) to make it a 5-2 final score.
