2015 Indoor Track & Field Champions Crowned

Mount Pleasant, Mich. - The University of Akron men's track and field team, ranked 16th in the country, claimed their second straight Mid-American Conference title. The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team claimed their fourth MAC title Saturday at Central Michigan University.
The day started off with Eastern Michigan’s Solomon Ijah winning the men’s heptathlon scoring 5444 points. Buffalo’s Craig Howard claimed the second place spot (5439) while Ijah’s teammate Levi Selvig took third (5304).
In the men’s shot put, Buffalo’s Jonathan Jones threw a new conference record of 20.06m. In the women’s shot put, Kent State’s Danniel Thomas, who was also named Most Outstanding Field Performer, threw a new conference record of 17.71.
Eastern Michigan’s Donald Scott broke the triple jump MAC Championship record jumping 16.38 meters while Kent State’s Dior Delophont claimed the women’s triple jump (12.86m).
In the running events, Northern Illinois’ Latesha Bigby claimed the women’s 60 meter hurdles (8.42) and William Barnes won the mens (7.90). Akron’s Rachel Christian won the women’s 60 meter dash title (7.49) and Kent State’s Wayne Gordon won the men’s (6.83).
In the 200 meter dash, Buffalo’s Camaria Long won with a time of 24.40 and William Barnes grabbed the men’s title with a time of 21.84.
Eastern Michigan’s Jordann McDermitt broke the MAC women’s 3000 meter run record crossing the finish line with a time of 9:27.98. Eastern Michigan’s Willy Fink claimed the men’s title with a time of 8:19.34.
Western Michigan’s Ayiana won the women’s 400 meter dash with a time of 56.24 while Akron’s Brent Gray claimed the men’s race with a time of 49.23.
In the 800 meter run, Buffalo’s Meghan Manley grabbed the women’s title with a time of 2:11.72 and Clayton Murphy claimed the men’s title (1:53.10).
Central Michigan’s Matt Mueller claimed the high jump title clearing 2.10 meters while Akron’s Claudia Garcia Jou won the women’s event clearing 1.84 meters.
In the men’s pole vault, Akron’s Shawn Barber, who currently holds the collegiate indoor pole vault record, took home the MAC title jumping a MAC Championship record height of 5.80 meters.
The 4x400 meter relay, the final event of the evening, was won by Northern Illinois on the women’s side and Akron on the men’s.
The 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships are March 13-14 at Arkansas. The NCAA will release its championship field Tuesday evening.
