CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Ball State women's tennis team, downed N.C. Central by a 6-1 final score Tuesday afternoon at the UNC Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.  The Cardinals improved their overall record to 7-2 on the season while the Eagles dropped to 2-6 on the year.

Ball State took the early 1-0 advantage over N.C. Central after taking the doubles point from the Eagles.  Courtney Earnest and Rosalinda Calderon took down NCCU's Rebecca Wood and Ekaterina Nekrasova by a score of 6-2 on court one.  Bethany Moore alongside doubles partner Courtney Wild defeated Aissa Muamba and Mia Ramic, by the same score at the No. 2 spot.

The Cardinals continued their winning ways in singles action, winning five of the six matches.  Wild, Earnest, Toni Ormond and Calderon all won in their respective positions in straight sets.  Moore dropped her first set 6-4 on court five against Mia Ramic but fought back to win 6-4 in the second set.  She went on to win the match in a 16-14 tie breaker.

The Ball State women's tennis team continues spring action in Chapel Hill, N.C. when it takes on North Carolina-Charlotte, Thursday at 2 p.m.  After Thursday's match, the Cardinals will return home March 14 for a 1:30 p.m. match against Oakland in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.

Bowling Green:

IPFW Tops Falcons

Host IPFW took advantage of an injury-depleted Bowling Green State University tennis squad, downing the Falcons by a 7-0 count Friday evening (Feb. 27). The non-conference dual match was held at Empowered Sports Club.

The Falcons had just four players in the lineup on Friday evening, forfeiting at the fifth and sixth singles flights as well as the third doubles flight. A quartet of first-year players, three of whom joined the team at the start of the Spring semester, comprised the BGSU lineup in both singles and doubles.

BG's lineup at IPFW included freshman Emily Witt at the top flight, sophomores Leeah Floyd and Antonina Farrar at the second and third flights, respectively, and freshman Sydney Seeley at flight number four.

"I couldn't be more proud of Emily, Leeah, Nina, and Syd," said coach Olga Elkin. "I love watching them play because they stay positive and always give me 110% on the court. They work super hard and have never once complained, and have improved so much from day one from the hard work they have put in. They are such a great addition to the team and we are lucky to have them."

After winning the third-flight match by default, the Mastodons needed to win just one of the remaining two matches to take the doubles point. The hosts got that win when Alina Schibol and Sara Sherif defeated Farrar and Seeley by a 6-1 count at flight number two.

At the first flight, Witt and Floyd battled the Mastodons' top duo of Mayu Sato and Marcy Huck before that match was halted when the second-flight match finished. Sato and Huck, who entered Friday night's match with an overall record of 15-6, led by a 5-1 count.

In singles play, Witt held her own against Sato at the top flight. Sato is the reigning Summit League Player of the Year, while Witt was making her first collegiate appearance at the top flight, but Witt hung tough before dropping a 6-3 opening set. And, the BGSU freshman took an early lead in the second set before Sato rebounded for a 6-2 victory.

On Friday night, all four Falcons who took the court competed at the highest singles flight of their young collegiate careers. Sofia Sorokina picked up a win by identical 6-2 scores over Floyd, who was competing at the second flight, while Ella Norgren downed Farrar at the third flight by a 6-2, 6-1 result. The fourth flight saw Emily Richardson top Seeley.

BGSU is now idle from competition for several weeks, returning to competition on Sunday, March 15, with a match at UIC. The UIC dual is BG's final non-conference contest before the Mid-American Conference opener against Northern Illinois University five days later (Friday, March 20).

"We have a few weeks off between matches now," said Elkin. "We will use that time to rest up and hopefully get healthy enough to get back to having a full lineup before we head to UIC for our next match and before we start our conference matches."

Huskies Drop Tough Match At Southern Illinois, 4-3

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking match to Southern Illinois, losing its undefeated record after suffering a 4-3 setback to the Salukis in Carbondale, Ill.

NIU had been unbeaten and entered the in-state matchup ranked No. 74, but lost to Southern Illinois by the narrowest of margins on Saturday morning. The Huskies have now lost eight straight matches against the Salukis dating back to 2005.

First-year head coach Tanya Gombera was disappointed to see her team lose its perfect record but thought that the Huskies still played well against a team that NIU has struggled mightily against in recent years.

"I thought the team competed well today and had a lot of heart against a very good team," Gombera said. "I am confident that if we continue to play like this we should be successful in conference play."

The Huskies were unable to win the doubles point for the first time this season, and that point for Southern Illinois proved decisive despite singles wins by Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central), Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) for NIU.

Youel and Alvarez won the top two singles matches in dramatic fashion, both battling back from one set down to win in three sets by winning late games; Youel's victory kept her undefeated start to the season alive, improving to 17-0 in 2015.

De La Torre picked up a straight-set victory, but Mary Malkin (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance) lost in singles for the first time this season, dropping a third-set tiebreaker in a back-and-forth No. 3 match.

The NIU women's tennis team will face another tough team on the road next weekend when the Huskies travel to No. 38 DePaul on Saturday, March 7. The match will begin at 2 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.

The sweep against Ferris State represents the first 7-0 shutout for the Broncos since their second match of the season, a 7-0 decision over Valparaiso on Jan. 17.

After a brief respite the Broncos returned to action, taking on the Chargers and producing an identical 7-0 result. Perinovic and Kuhle joined forces in doubles and claimed the first win of the nightcap, beating Amberley Bailey and Rachel Blaauw by a 6-0 score. Myers and Aleck won by the same score at the No. 1 doubles position, beating Lindsay Peirce and Sydney Delp 6-0 to clinch the doubles session. Eristavi and Ono closed out the doubles session with their second win together, beating Dana Grace Buck and Morgan Delp 6-2 as WMU swept the doubles session and earned the point.

Labina Petrovska clinched the team win with a victory over Blaauw at the No. 6 spot, winning 6-3, 6-1 to secure the second win of the day. Ono cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Buck in the No. 4 spot, Olivia Myers picked up her first career win at No. 1 singles by beating Sydney Delp 6-2, 6-2, and Eristavi rounded out the match with a straight-sets win over Peirce.
