Mount Pleasant, Mich. – With the first day of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships completed, Eastern Michigan currently leads both the men’s and women’s team standings. The men have tallied 44 points through four events and the women 48.75 through six events.

In the men’s weight throw, Kent State’s Matthias Tayala started the day throwing a new MAC Championship record of 22.90m. Eastern Michigan’s Anthony Jones placed second throwing 21.09 and in third, Tayala’s teammate (20.41).

Northern Illinois Claudette Day claimed the women’s pentathlon title with 3838 total points. Day became the first Huskie to win this event. Akron’s Jaclyn Siefring took second with 3796 points and Day’s teammate Latesha Bigby placed third (3766).

Through three events, Akron’s Jordan Latimer currently leads the men’s heptathlon with 3240 points.

In the women’s weight throw, Akron’s Brittany Funk claimed the 2015 title throwing a new MAC Championship record of 21.86. Funk’s teammate Alexis Cooks finished second throwing 21.59 also surpassing the 2009 record of 21.50.

In the long jump, Eastern Michigan’s Donald Scott took the men’s title jumping 7.57m while Kent State’s Dior Delophont claimed the women’s title jumping 5.95m.

Eastern Michigan junior Ellie Braidic claimed the women’s pole vault title clearing 4.03m. Kent State’s Samantha Tollerud placed second and Akron’s Claire Lucas finished third.

Eastern Michigan’s Victoria Voronko claimed her second straight 5000 meter run title finishing in a time of 16:46.20. In the men’s race, Eastern Michigan’s Willy Fink claimed the 5000 title crossing the finish line at 14:24.56.

Eastern Michigan women concluded the night winning the distance medley. The team of Taylor Knoll, Morgan Yeadon, Natalie Cizmas and Victoria Voronko finished with a time of 11:39.65. Toledo finished second (11:42.23) and Buffalo in third (11:51.43).

Buffalo men claimed the distance medley title. Cameron Bruce, Treyvon Mask, Tyler Scheving and Brian Crimmins crossed the finish line at 10:04.47.

The action continues tomorrow with the heptathlon beginning at 9:45 a.m., field events beginning at 11:00 a.m. and running events beginning at 1:15 p.m.
